No full textThis is the initial part of a larger project consisting of several separate papers. This particular paper has two parts. 1. “No Crumbs on the Table-Cloth” (a line of Pasternak’s poem) claims that a crumb motive in an early version of the poem by Boris Pasternak “Piry” (1913) reflects the initial paragraph of Dante’s Convivio with its bread metaphor (Conv. I.i.7, 10–11). Some other examples of similar echoes are quoted. 2. “The Motherland’s Shoulders” discusses the metaphor shoulders of a mountain, which can be found in a couplet by Koncheyev—a fictional poet from Vladimir Nabokov’s Dar (The Gift, 1936—37 / 1952). This metaphor was previously treated as a quote from Mandelstam’s poem “Zverinets” (1915), but here both cases (and, probably, some additional examples) are seen to go back to the same metaphor in Inf. I, 16 (where it means summit rather than mountainside) and numerous translations of Inferno into English
Modern versus Postmodern State and Sovereignty
No full textIn today’s globalising and fragmenting world, where the great picture of sovereignty is being replaced by ‘language games’ around this notion, it is worth noting that there has not actually been much discussion of the term. In many articles the dispute is rather short and not deep enough in comparison with discussions of other terms in international law. The designation of ‘sovereignty’ needs to also take into account the cultural diversity of the world – different dominant beliefs, customs, ethnic traditions, and values. In relation to globalisation, the existence of different civilisations and values side by side creates a completely new situation. In order to understand paradigmatic breakthroughs in statehoods and sovereignties in today’s globalising world, we will take a retrospective look at when modern states were just starting to develop.

Tänapäeva sõjavägi on oma loomult konservatiivne bürokraatlik organisatsioon ja see muudab innovatsiooni keerukaks. Tulevaseks sõjaks on raske valmistuda, sest minevikukogemus ei pruugi olla usaldusväärne teenäitaja. Küll aga saab ajaloost küllap õppida, kuidas kohaneda ja uueneda võimalikult efektiivselt, kui sõda on juba alanud. Selleks on Esimese maailmasõja üle saja aasta tagused sündmused endiselt huvipakkuvad. Käesolevas artiklis on kokku võetud viimase aja uurimused kohanemisest ja innovatsioonist ning taktika ja sõjakunsti arengust Esimese maailmasõja eel ja ajal ning arutletakse selle üle, kas on universaalseid mustreid, mis aitaksid nüüdisaegsetel relvajõududel, sealhulgas Eesti kaitseväel, olla sõjakunsti uuendamisel edukad
Motivation of foreigners to learn the Lithuanian language [Leedu keele õppimise motivatsioon välismaalaste seas]
No full textThe article discusses the motivation of adults coming to Lithuania to learn Lithuanian as a foreign language. The motivational background for learning “small” languages will be discussed. Lithuanian, spoken by approximately 3.5 million people worldwide, is an example of a less popular choice for foreign language learners. However, reindependence in 1991 and joining the European Union in 2004 created new opportunities for teaching Lithuanian as a foreign language. In this paper we wanted to examine the motivational factors driving foreign adults to come to Lithuania to learn its language. The theoretical framework was based on the motivation theories of Gardner and Lambert (1972) and Deci and Ryan (1985). The main tool used for the purpose of research was the Foreign Language Learning Motivation Questionnaire (Gonzales, Lopez 2016). We conducted quantitative research on a representative sample of 114 respondents who participated in different language courses in Lithuania. The results show that learning Lithuanian is strongly connected with internal and integrative motivation, rather than external and instrumental, while the autotelic value of Lithuanian language was also highly rated by the students. This confirms that learning “small” languages needs special motivation and instrumental factor plays a lesser role. The article ends with a discussion of the results within a wider context

No full textInnovatsioonist ja avatud innovatsioonist rääkimine ja kirjutamine on tavapärane eelkõige erasektoriga seoses. Ometi on tänapäeva avalikus sektoris hakatud üha enam huvi tundma erasektoris kasutatavate innovatsiooni soodustavate meetodite vastu, et muuta ka avalikke teenuseid vajadustele paremini vastavaks ning luua poliitiline, juriidiline ja organisatoorne keskkond, mis tagab tulemuslikumalt kohanemise muutustega ning parandab sekkumise tulemuslikkust ja jätkusuutlikkust.

This particular installment concerns the following persons mentioned in Akhmatova’s notes: Sam N. Driver (1929—2003), Tat’iana Gndich (1907—1976), Alexander Golovin (1863—1930), Ernest Hemingway (1899—1961), and Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833—1904). Among other things, it includes the first publication of the surviving fragments of the very first English translation of Akhmatova’s Poema bez geroia (A Poem without A Hero) made by Tat’iana Gnedich (in whose translation most Russians read Don Juan by Lord Byron)
