Moroccan Arabic: The Battlefield of Language Ideologies
The debate on the use of Moroccan Arabic (also known as Moroccan darija) dates back to the medieval period when literary critics have discussed the effectiveness of writing in Moroccan Arabic lyrics of Muslim Spain, muwashshahat and zajal. This debate was later sharpened in the protectorate era (1912-1955) by the French colonial administration in its attempt to use MA in education as a tool to divide Morocco into Arabs and Amazigh, separate the country from the Arab world and pave the way for French to flourish in society. Nowadays, the use of MA in education came to the fore front of the interests of Moroccan intelligentsia. A new current of Francophone academics called for the legitimacy of using MA in education and media to fight illiteracy and maximize access to education in the country. They held many conferences for the sake of discussing the utility of MA as an alternative for SA in education and designed dictionaries and books to ease its instruction. Such attempts raised the hostility of Arabists and Amazigh activists. They regarded the defense of MA use in education as an ideology of language to eradicate Moroccan official languages in favor of French and the Francophone culture. The present empirical research examines the status of MA in education and the different ideologies backing its use by Moroccan teachers and students
An Ethno-pragmatic Analysis of Verbal Indirection in Yoruba
The Yoruba language is one of the richest languages in the world in terms of how words and expressions can be employed beyond their conventional meanings. One way of achieving unconventional meaning of words and expressions in the language is the deployment of verbal indirection which is a strategic avoidance of speaking directly in order to achieve a communicative goal. As phenomenal as this concept is in the Yoruba language and culture, it has not received adequate attention from scholars, particularly in Nigeria. This study therefore attempts an ethno-pragmatic analysis of verbal indirection in Yoruba, within the purview of Hyme's Ethnography of speaking and Brown and Levinson's Face theory. The study observes, contrary to the existing notion that verbal indirection is a face-saving strategy in language, it can be deployed as a face-threatening strategy in the Yoruba language
Interferences of Minangkabau-Indonesian EFL Students' Dialogues: A Result of Double Language Transfer
Learning English as a foreign language is a long journey of language transfer for students in West Sumatera, Indonesia. When the students learn to produce a sentence in English, they often use double language transfers, that is, from Minangkabau language as their native language to Indonesian language as their national language and from Indonesian language to English Language. Furthermore, the effect of literal translation which is used as mainly method in the process of learning languages at schools worsen the students' errors and mistakes in learning English language. This research seeks to investigate the interferences in English Conversation scripts made by students of UPI YPTK Padang who were assigned to create a conversation in groups to certain topics. The results of the lexical and syntactical interferences found in the scripts indicated that the students are struggling with noun-verb confusion, subject matters, word choices, tenses, and non-existence forms of auxiliaries in L1. The findings provide insight into English learning and teaching techniques and present suggestions for lectures and materials developers

The research was conducted in three stages: data collection, data analysis, and data display. The data were collected by applying interview method. The data were obtained from Balinese speakers, Balinese literature, as well as the researcher as a native speaker of Balinese. The data were analyzed by using the distributional method. The display of the results were done formally and informally. The results show that there are four intransitive verb markers consist of ma-, N- (ny-, ng-, and m-), ma-an, and ma-in markers. The occurrence of intransitive verb markers as in ma- and N- are located on the left of the verb while marker ma-an and ma-in are located on the left and right of the verb. The four markers categorize as bound morpheme and placed as a central marker. The marking direction of the entire markers is considered as markers of a central element that mark the verb itself in order to form intransitive verb construction
