Early Childhood Caries and Associated Risk Factors among Preschool Children in Southeast Iran
Objective: To determine the prevalence of ECC and evaluate its association with possible risk factors in a group of preschool children in Kerman, Iran. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Kerman on healthy preschool children (up to 6 years old) in June and October 2021. The children were randomly selected from kindergartens using a clustered sampling method, and their height, weight, dental caries, and occlusion were evaluated. Parents completed a questionnaire assessing feeding habits (breast/bottle feeding) and oral habits during the first two years of life. Data were analyzed by logistic regression and chi-squared test using SPSS 27 (p<0.05). Results: Of 530 examined children, 300 (56.6%) had ECC. Feeding habits (breast/bottle feeding) during the first two years of life, nail-biting, and age had a significant relationship with ECC (p<0.05). Although ECC in underweight and obese children was more prevalent than in children with normal weight, the relationship between ECC and body mass index (BMI) was not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of ECC in preschool children was high. ECC\u27s most important risk factors were age, nutritional habits, nail-biting, and underweight or obese children. Therefore, attention to feeding habits and correction of oral habits can reduce ECC
PlayTeeth Tool Development: An Innovative Dental Care Tool for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Objective: To associate the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) validated techniques with technology in dentistry by developing software to mediate and facilitate dental care. Material and Methods: A literature review was performed to retrieve information about those techniques. The software for tablets and smartphones was developed based on the data extracted. The results were considered to determine which characteristics the tool should present, such as settings, colors, and gameplay patterns. Results: The main characteristics are illustrations with vibrant colors and background music and two characters to be chosen. Conclusion: An application is presented that aims to facilitate such care in a practical, accessible, and free manner, improving the interaction between dentists and patients
Analysis of the Cytotoxic Effects in Removable Dentures Fabricated Using Two Different Processing Techniques: An Observational Comparative Study
Objective: To compare the cytotoxicity of polymethyl methacrylate dentures fabricated through compression molded and injection molded processing techniques. Material and Methods: The injection-molded group utilized IVOCAP resin, while the compression-molded group used DPI heat-cure resin. Twenty patients were selected and divided into two groups of ten. Buccal epithelial cells were collected from each patient pre-insertion and three months post-insertion of the dentures. The micronucleus assay was used to determine cytotoxicity. Intergroup comparisons were conducted using the Mann-Whitney U test, while intragroup comparisons were carried out using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The intergroup comparison demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the dimensions of micronuclei measured post-smear (p=0.027). The group using the compression molding technique had higher mean values of micronuclei (24.2 ± 7.6) than the injection-molded technique. Intragroup comparisons conducted with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a highly significant difference between pre-smear and post-smear values in both groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: Injection-molded dentures demonstrated significantly lower cytotoxicity than those fabricated using the compression-molding technique
Why Use the Oral Assessment Guide to Assess the Oral Cavity in Children Undergoing Antineoplastic Treatment?
Oral mucositis is the most common adverse effect of cancer treatment and, histologically, consists of direct or indirect damages in the epithelium of the oral mucosa (especially the non-keratinized) and submucosal. Clinically, it manifests as atrophy, swelling, erythema, and ulceration of oral tissue. The appearance of these lesions in the patient generates discomfort/pain, affecting the ability to speak, swallow, and eat. Remarkably, SOM can be observed in the first week of chemotherapy. In addition, patients with OM require medications to control pain and infections, prolonged hospital stays, nutritional support, and the treatment may be interrupted or modified. Moreover, the mucositis experiences of children and young people with cancer and their parents revealed significant functional, psychological and social defiance. Therefore, this condition is as a challenge to pediatric oncologists and pediatric dentists
Fracture Resistance of Endodontically Treated Teeth Restored with High-Viscosity Bulk-Fill Resin Composites
Objective: To evaluate the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with different high-viscosity bulk-fill resin composites. Material and Methods: Forty extracted human upper premolars were endodontically treated and divided into four groups based on the bulk-fill resin composite used: CO: Scothbond Multi-Purpose + Filtek Z350XT; SF: Scothbond Universal + Filtek Bulk Fill; SO: OptiBond All-in-one + SonicFill; and, TT: Tetric N- Bond Universal + Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill. Universal adhesive systems were applied using the self-etching technique. After 24 hours, specimens underwent compressive loading at 1mm/min, and fracture patterns were evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey\u27s post-test (p>0.05), while fracture patterns were assessed with the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results:Fracture resistance was similar across groups (p>0.05), with favorable fractures observed in the CO and SF groups. Conclusion: The fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with bulk-fill resin composites does not differ from those restored with conventional nanohybrid resin composites
Is Bad Tooth Position Associated with Bullying among Schoolchildren?
Objective: To determine the prevalence of bullying and investigate the association between malocclusion and bullying victimization. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with students from the public school network in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. The sample was probabilistic by cluster, resulting in 381 students of both sexes aged 12-15 years. The victim version of the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire was used to assess bullying victimization, the DAI for occlusion, and a socioeconomic questionnaire was directed to parents. Descriptive statistics were used for categorical variables and the Pearson\u27s Chi-square test was used to identify associations between victimization and independent variables. Variables with p-value <0.20 were included in the Poisson Regression analysis and the measure of association was demonstrated as PR and confidence intervals (95%). Results: The prevalence of malocclusion was 67.7%, with more cases of normal malocclusion/or minor problems (32.3%). Maxillary overjet ≥ 4 mm was the most frequent DAI component, followed by dental crowding and half-cusp molar relationship. The prevalence of bullying victimization was 41.2%, and of these, 42.9% were targets of dental bullying. Associations were identified between bullying victimization and self-perception of poorly positioned teeth (p<0.001) and dental bullying (p<0.001). Bullying victimization was higher among adolescents who used public services and among those who were victims of dental bullying. Conclusion: High malocclusion and bullying rates were observed in the school population, both general and dental. High perception of poorly positioned teeth and use of public health services are associated with bullying victimization

The essay on “Shallow graves, cadaveric fauna and forensic contexts”: represents an interdisciplinary synthesis.
This interdisciplinary essay explores the integration of Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Entomology to analyze shallow graves, focusing on decomposition processes, necrophagous insect succession, and environmental factors in forensic contexts, particularly in Northeast Brazil. It highlights the challenges of post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation due to regional variability and the paradox of insect colonization in shallow burials. The study emphasizes the need for localized research, standardized protocols, and technological advancements like AI and 3D modeling to enhance forensic accuracy. Collaboration between institutions and multidisciplinary training is advocated to strengthen forensic methodologies and legal evidence. Keywords: Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Entomology, Shallow Graves, Post-Mortem Interval (PMI), Interdisciplinary Forensic Investigation
