Correlation of Crying Pattern to Clinical Diagnosis of Children undergoing treatment
Aim & Objectives: To correlate the Crying pattern to Clinical Diagnosis of children undergoing treatment. Materials & Methods: Children in the age group 4-9 years were divided into Group1: (40 children) & Group 2: (60 children) and their cries were recorded using a video camera. Different cries analyzed were frightened, pain, obstinate, manipulative and boredom cry on the basis of their description in the literature. Group I was subjected to detailed clinical examination and Group II to various dental procedures. Results: The most commonly observed cry was pain cry. Pain cry was mostly associated with dento-alveolar abscess. With respect to dental procedures, pain cry was commonly associated with use of inject able aids, frightened cry and compensatory cry with the use of dental drill. Conclusion: Cries could be means of communication and asset in clinical diagnosis.Key words: pain cry, frightened cry, compensatory cry, obstinate cry, boredom cry, manipulative cry
Oral Rehabilitation of a child with Chondroectodermal dysplasia (Ellis-van Creveld Syndrome) – A case report
Aims and objectives: This case report aims to describe the dental management strategy of a case of Chondroectodermal dysplasia [Ellis-van Creveld syndrome], an autosomal recessive disorder with the characteristic features of short-limbed dwarfism, postaxial polydactyly, ectodermal and congenital heart defects. Case Description: This case reports presents the dental management a 12 year old girl who reported with the complaint of multiple missing teeth and malformed teeth. The management strategy aimed at aesthetics to improve the social well being of the child. Conclusion: Though few case reports on Ellis Van Creveld syndrome has been reported, managing the oral problems are quiet rare

Numerous articles emphasize the importance of using prosthesis to prevent injuries related to cheek biting habit in children with systemic disorders. Clinical Overview of Deep Bite Management
The excessive overbite is a complex orthodontic problem that may involve a particular group of teeth or the whole dentition, or the maxilla and mandible. The correction of deep bite is one of the primary objectives of orthodontic treatment and one of the most difficult to treat successfully. Innumerable methods have been developed to treat deep bite but no single approach is best. Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages and optimal correction of deep overbite requires accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment planning and efficient execution of treatment mechanics. This clinical review article is an attempt to enlist various modalities of deep bite correction presently available to the clinician and also gives a brief inside into the diagnostic and selection criteria to be applied for successful and stable deep bite correction
How reliable are failure site assessments after "macro" shear debonding of resin from tooth substrate?
Objective: To determine inter-examiner reliability and concordance of failure pattern assessments made by stereomicroscopy and SEM, respectively, after macro shear bond testing of bonded resin composite from human enamel and dentin.Method: Six investigators examined independently the failure pattern morphology of 184 debonded tooth side specimens using stereomicroscopy inspection at 20-fold magnification. The same specimens were investigated using SEM at 1000-fold magnification to determine the "true" failure site morphology. Failures were classified as 1=adhesive, 2=mixed (adhesive-cohesive), 3=cohesive in resin, 4=cohesive in tooth, 5=mixed cohesive (resin-tooth).Results: Spearman’s rho coefficients of correlation between the paired examiner score allocations differed between "strong disagreement" and "moderate agreement". Comparisons of each examiner's ratings with the SEM ratings revealed coefficients, describing these relationships as“disagreement"in the worst and“moderate agreement" in the best case.Conclusion: Inter-examiner reliability in fracture pattern characterization of tooth specimens is ambiguous and not concordant with fracture pattern morphology rating using SEM
Biofilm In Endodontics: New Understanding To An Old Problem
The main goal in endodontic infection is to recognize and removal of etiological factors. Debridement of the root canal by instrumentation, irrigation and removal of biofilm is considered important factor to prevent and treat endodontic disease. The root canal morphology provides excellent conditions for a biofilm formation which is one of the main causes for endodontic reinfection.The following review article explores the biofilm formation which commences from adhesion of planktonic microorganisms to a surface followed by colonization, coadhesion, growth and maturation and finally detachment of some microorganisms. One stage vs. Two stage Non-surgical Periodontal therapy and their effect on WBC count
ABSTRACT: Background: Bacteremia in periodontitis has been reported after oral examinations and periodontal pathogens have been shown to colonize distant sites. In periodontitis, leukocyte counts have been shown to be slightly elevated in patients compared to healthy subjects. The total number of white blood cells in the peripheral blood is a diagnostic measure of infection or inflammatory disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of one stage and a two stage non-surgical therapy on total leukocyte count (TLC) and differential leukocyte count (DLC) in periodontitis patients. Materials and methods: 30 periodontitis patients aged between 18 – 40 years were included. The patients were divided into two treatment groups-Group I:- 1 Phase Non-surgical therapy.Group II :-2 Phase Non-surgical therapy Sample collection: Group I: - 1) Pretreatment 2) 1 week after Non-surgical therapy. Group II: -1) Pretreatment 2) 1 week after 1st phase non-surgical therapy 3) 1 week after 2nd phase non-surgical therapy. The laboratory analysis of total leukocyte count and differential leukocyte count was performed. Results: Both the groups showed significant reduction in the total leukocyte count after therapy Conclusion: Results indicate that a therapeutic intervention may have a systemic effect on blood count in periodontitis patients. Clinical Evaluation of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for Various Treatment Procedures in Pediatric dentistry
The most distressing aspect of dentistry for the average dental patient is the fear and anxiety caused by the dental environment, particularly the dental injection referred to as “Needle-phobia” or “Blenophobia”. Many children and even adults are afraid of syringes and needle insertions. This procedure is considered unpleasant from physical, chemical and psychological standpoints. Reducing this fear in children may help to provide overall comfort and well being during the entire dental experience. The challenge is to find an effective method that can be utilized in the pediatric population as an alternative to injectable local anesthetics. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) also known as Electronic Dental Anesthesia (EDA) is non-invasive, safe and well accepted by the patients. It has been shown that EDA is a viable mode of pain control during some dental procedures in pediatric dentistry. This study was conducted to clinically evaluate the effectiveness of EDA in various dental procedures as an alternative to injectable local anaesthetics, details of the study are discussed in the present paper
Colour stability: An important physical property of esthetic restorative materials
With the recent technological advances in dentistry, excellent shade matching of the restorative and prosthetic dental materials with the surrounding oral structures has become a reality. However, the dynamism of the oral environment demands from a dental material not just accurate shade replication, but also that the material is able to retain the matched shade over a long period of time. Hence, the failure or success of any esthetic restorative material depends first on the colour match and then on the colour stability of the material. This article reviews the colour stability of various esthetic dental materials, the methods of evaluation of colour stability and the various factors affecting colour stability. Evaluation of Dental Bleaching Gels’ pH in Enamel Contact
The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH of in office dental bleaching gel with two components, after mixed, with or without the enamel contact. Six bleaching gels, hydrogen peroxide based, in a range concentration 20% to 37.5% were tested. The gels evaluated were Polla Office+ - SDI (PO+), Polla Office Bulk Kit -SDI (POB), Whiteness HP 20 - FGM (HP20), Whiteness HP 35 - FGM (HP35), Whiteness HP Blue - FGM (HPB) and Total Bleach - Clean Line (TB). The groups were divided according to the type of gel. For each gel, 2 samples were obtained, in one of them human teeth enamel powder was added to simulate the contact of the bleaching gel to the teeth and the other was kept without the enamel powder. To take the pH measures, a pH meter model M-20 (Digicrom Analítica) and a double junction glass electrode DMCV-8 (Digimed) were used. The results were recorded and then a graphic was made to compare them. For all the gels investigated, the pH values were higher when the bleaching gel was in contact to enamel. It was concluded that the pH of bleaching gels show alterations in contact to dental enamel. Keywords: Dental Bleaching, gels, pH
