Aims & Objectives Oligodontia is designated as the congenital agenesis of six or more permanent teeth, excluding third molars. Thus the comprehensive management of such a condition is always challenging and requires a multi-disciplinary approach involving orthodontic, oral surgical, periodontic and prosthodontic specialties. The purpose of this article is to throw light on the fact that early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment phases are essential for a successful treatment outcome. Case  description This case report presents a multidisciplinary management of a 20- year old female patient of familial non-syndromic oligodontia with congenitally missing eight permanent teeth. The first phase of therapy aimed at a pre-prosthetic orthodontic space gain, alignment, canine uprighting and corrections of intermaxillary relations as a pre-requisite for better treatment outcome. Phase two therapy was the full mouth rehabilitation of the entire dentition using ‘Twin stage Hobo technique’ at an increased vertical dimension of 3mm. Conclusion The prosthodontic rehabilitation was completed using tooth supported fixed metal ceramic restorations. These full mouth fixed restorations successfully restored function and esthetics

Abstract Background Periodontitis and hypertension, both of which are chronic inflammatory and asymptomatic in nature have a high prevalence in general population. Anti-cardiolipin antibodies are often directed against cardiolipin which is an important component of inner mitochondrial membrane. Anti-CL antibodies can increase in chronic infection and inflammation, thrombosis, stroke, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. Hence the study was aimed to elucidate a link between Periodontitis and systemic inflammatory status by estimating the serum Anti-CL antibodies in patients with chronic Periodontitis and essential hypertension.   Materials and Methods Sixty subjects who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and divided in to four equal groups-  1.Healthy controls, 2. Periodontally healthy-hypertensive, 3. Chronic Periodontitis-hypertensive and 4.Chronic Periodontitis-systemically healthy. Serum samples collected from the subjects were analysed for Anti-CL antibodies by using a specific ELISA kit. Statistical method; the data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using t-test.   Results Anti-CL antibody levels were elevated in chronic Periodontitis- hypertensive patients (Group 3)  (3.7600±0.29665) compared with other groups, followed by (Group 2) Periodontally healthy-hypertensive(2.5200±0.22804)(p<0.001).   Conclusion Chronic Periodontitis results in increased systemic inflammatory burden that can further contribute to elevation of Anti-CL antibodies in hypertensive patients.   Key words; Anti cardiolipin antibodies, Chronic Periodontitis, Essential hypertension, Inflammatory markers  Serum,  Systemic inflammation.   Word count :188 words   Running title; Anti Cardiolipin antibodies and Periodontiti

Plasma cell gingivitis: A unique gingival lesion of unknown etiology

    Get PDF
Gingival overgrowth is a common feature of gingival diseases, and it represents an exuberant response of the tissues to a variety of systemic and local factors. Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG), an uncommon, non-malignant lesion, is often characterized by an off ending allergen which causes a dense infi ltration of plasma cells in connective tissue. Soft tissue biopsy of affected and normal tissues is necessary for confi rmatory diagnosis. The significance of this lesion is that it may cause severe gingival infl ammation, discomfort, and bleeding with minimal trauma and may resemble more serious conditions. Here is a case of a 34-year-old female patient who presented with a solitary diff use gingival enlargement in mandibular anterior region. Overgrowth was multilobular, erythematous smooth and glossy in appearance, semicircular, non-tender with a sessile base which first gave the impression of pyogenic granuloma. The overgrowth was surgically excised and subjected to a histopathological examination that revealed a predominant plasma cell infi ltrate admixed with few neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophil suggestive of PCG. The patient has been kept on follow-up and post-operatively there has been no recurrence of the lesion until date

    Get PDF
Aims and Objectives: To compare the presence and length of anterior loop (AL)measured on constructed panoramic radiographs (CPR) and its length measuredby a new technique utilizing (three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomographic[3D-CBCT]).Materials and Methods: The CPR and CBCT records of 67 cases were selected from the Oral Radiology Department archives. The presence and length of the AL were assessed. The mandibular canal was traced using the tangential cuts, color coded along its course and tracing was continued on cross-sectional images. The length of the colored (AL) was measured on 3D-CBCT images till the nerve exits the mental foramen. Results: Using a paired t-test, a signifi cant diff erence was observed between both lengths (t = 0.05, P = 0.001). The mean and standard deviation for AL length was 2.87 ± 2.07 mm. While for 3D-CBCT, it was 1.71 ± 1.52.Conclusion: This new tracing method on 3D-CBCT images can minimize the risk of mental nerve injury as well as overestimation of the safe distance required during implant placement

Introduction: The triple P-positive parenting program is a multilevel, preventively oriented parenting and family support strategy developed by the Matthew Sanders and his colleagues at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The program aims to prevent severe behavioral, emotional, and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills, and confi dence of parents. Aims and Objective: The aim of this study: (1) Reduce anxiety about dental treatment in child as well as parent’s, (2) promote oral health, (3) encourage children to go to the dentist, (4) to examine the level of agreement between parents and children in the measures of dental anxiety used in the study. The objective of this study is to analyze whether informing parents/guardians about their child’s oral health care needs: With a standardized illustrated educational tool, i.e. powerpoint presentation plus verbal communication would result in a better response from both the parent and the child, compared to the responses when verbal communication strategies were used alone. Materials and Methods: All materials are written in English. The school and parental consent were taken regarding the survey. It was done as a comparative assessment of 50 children’s under age 2-5 years. Primary care services are selected. Two groups were made one is the control group and other is a standard group. The control group received only verbal information, and the standard group received verbal as well as visual information. The child’s questionnaire included the Modifi ed Child Dental Anxiety Scale (faces) (Howard and Freeman, 2007). The parent’s questionnaire included the Child Fear Survey Schedule - Dental Subscale (Kleinberg, 1994). Results: The results showed that the use of illustrative educational aides didn’t improve the parents’/guardians’ responses to the operative appointment compared to the responses of the parents’/guardians’ who were only given verbal instructions

Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the level of functioning of children with special health care needs and oral health status. Materials and Methods: A total of 46 children in the age group of 5-15 years were examined at three diff erent educational institutions which have diff erent physical and mental challenges. Among these 14 children were having hearing impairment, 14 children were mentally challenged, and 18 were having visual impairment. Oral examination was done using mouth mirror and probe by a single operator. The children were examined for decayed-missing-fi lled teeth (DMFT) and gingival health index. Statistically signifi cant negative correlation was seen for the communication skills and deft scores (P = 0.01), daily living skills, and DMFT scores (P = 0.006), socialization skills, and both deft and DMFT scores (P = 0.04), and motor skills with the gingival health scores (P = 0.004). Conclusion: Caries prevalence was greater in the children with problems in the communication skills, daily living skills, and socialization skills. In this study, gingival health assessed in children was poorest in the children with limited motor skills

Aims & objectives: The purpose of this paper is to provide a contribution to improve knowledge of the gain of information available when using an ICDAS D1MFT method vs. the conventional D3MFT method when analyzing a database of oral health clinical data of populations aged 6 - 15 years old and adults (15+ years) stemming from European (EU) Program "European Global Oral Health Indicators Development” (EGOHID). Materials and method: Clinical epidemiological data were collected in 2008 by a network of ‘sentinel’ dentists with a sample of European population in 8 countries. The EGOHID implementation of ICDAS D1MFT method recommends the collection of data using ICDAS lesion severity codes which gives information on both:  i) initial caries lesions according to the ICDAS method and ii) the more advanced stages of the caries, typically recorded when using the WHO basic method. Results: ICDAS improves detection of initial lesions not disclosed with conventional D3MFTmethods. The loss of information between the traditional method and the ICDAS method is of 40.8 % and 35.1% respectively for populations aged 6 - 15 years. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated very significant information gains in using the EGOHID application of ICDAS in the dental health information system setting.&nbsp
