Ethnobotanical data needs and their application in biology learning

    No full text
Ethnobotanical knowledge plays an important role in connecting biological concepts with local wisdom and contextual learning; however, its integration into formal biology education remains limited. This study aims to analyze the needs for ethnobotanical data among secondary school students and biology education students, as well as to examine its current application in biology learning materials. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Questionnaire data were collected from secondary school students and biology education students to identify priority ethnobotanical data categories, including local plant names, scientific names, plant parts used, traditional functions, cultural values, and conservation aspects. Interview data were used to explore perceptions of usefulness and preferred data presentation formats, while document analysis examined the extent of ethnobotanical integration in textbooks, learning modules, and curriculum documents. The results indicate that both groups expressed high to very high levels of need for ethnobotanical data, with biology education students consistently reporting higher needs, particularly for scientific and systematically organized information. Interview findings revealed that ethnobotanical data supported conceptual understanding, relevance to local contexts, teaching preparation, and research activities, with a strong preference for structured and visual presentation formats. Document analysis showed that existing biology learning materials provide limited, fragmented, and unsystematic ethnobotanical content with weak alignment to learning objectives. These findings highlight a significant gap between learners’ needs and available learning resources. The study implies the necessity of developing structured, contextual, and locally based ethnobotanical learning materials to enhance biology learning and support sustainable education

National soybean demand reaches 2.3 million tons per year, but domestic production is only around 800,000–900,000 tons with farmer productivity of 0.6–2.0 tons/ha, still below the potential of 2–3 tons/ha. Low yields are primarily influenced by inappropriate fertilization techniques, especially since most land in Southeast Sulawesi is nutrient-poor Ultisol. Productivity can be increased through a combination of biofertilizers, balanced inorganic fertilizers, and superior varieties. The effectiveness of biofertilizers is optimal when supported by local organic materials such as manure or agricultural waste, for example through the application of Biofresh. The purpose of this study was to determine the synergistic effect of Biofresh Plus biofertilizer and NPK inorganic fertilizer dosages on the productivity of several soybean varieties in Ultisol land. The research design used a split-plot design with the main factor being soybean varieties (Argomulyo, Anjasmoro, Dering-1, and Dena-1), and subplot factors in the form of fertilizer combinations: A1 (Biofresh + bokashi), A2 (Biofresh + bokashi + 25% NPK), A3 (Biofresh + bokashi + 50% NPK), and A4 (100% NPK). The treatment was repeated three times, resulting in 48 treatment units. The observed variables included the number of productive branches, the number of pods per plant, the weight of seeds per plant, the weight of 100 seeds, and the yield (ton ha⁻¹). The results showed that the synergy of biofresh, bokashi, and inorganic NPK fertilizers on various soybean varieties significantly affected the number of productive branches, the number of pods, the weight of seeds per plant, and the yield per hectare. The Dering-1 (Q3A3) variety treated with Biofresh, bokashi, and 50% of the recommended NPK dose provided the highest productivity, namely 2.40 tons ha⁻¹. Empowering English Teachers through PKGBI: A Mixed-Methods Study on Pedagogical Competence Improvement

    No full text
The quality of English language education in Indonesia is closely tied to the competence of its teachers. To address this, the Ministry of Education introduced the PKGBI (Peningkatan Kompetensi Guru Bahasa Inggris) program, which provides contextual, continuous, and collaborative professional development. Although the program has gained positive recognition, limited research has examined its impact using both quantitative measures and qualitative insights. This study employs a mixed-methods design to investigate the relationship between PKGBI participation and pedagogical competence among junior high school English teachers, while also exploring their lived experiences in the program. The quantitative component applied a correlational design, with data collected from 80 purposively selected teachers and analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The qualitative component adopted a phenomenological approach, using semi-structured interviews with 10 participants to capture how teachers perceive PKGBI, the benefits they experience, and the challenges they face. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation (r = 0.652) between teachers’ participation in PKGBI and their pedagogical competence. Teachers who were more actively involved demonstrated stronger teaching practices, higher confidence, and improved classroom strategies. Nevertheless, challenges such as time limitations and limited access were also identified. By integrating statistical evidence with teachers’ narratives, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of PKGBI’s effectiveness and offers practical recommendations for optimizing teacher professional development. Keywords: PKGBI, pedagogical competence, teacher professional development, mixed methods, phenomenolog
