    An Online Survey on Usability, Acceptability, Attitude and Knowledge of Herbal and Synthetic Cosmetic Among Sikkimese Population

    In recent years, the global cosmetics industry has witnessed a notable shift in consumer preferences towards natural and organic products, leading to an increased demand for herbal cosmetics derived from plant-based ingredients. This research survey presents a comparative analysis of herbal and synthetic cosmetics, exploring distinctions in formulation, efficacy, safety, and environmental impact. Herbal cosmetics incorporate natural elements like plant extracts, essential oils, herbs, and fruits, while synthetic counterparts are developed using chemical compounds in laboratories to replicate specific properties. The main objective is to find out the preferences between herbal and synthetic cosmetics among individuals in Sikkim. The methodology adopted for mini survey was pre-prepared questionnaires were developed by using Google forms and shared through the online platforms such as Mail, Whatapps and facebook. An online survey conducted in different districts of Sikkim revealed that 42% of respondents favoured herbal cosmetics, while 31% preferred synthetic products and 23% had no specific preference. Factors influencing those leaning toward synthetic cosmetics included perceived effectiveness, availability, and affordability. Despite the clear interest and preference for herbal cosmetics, the survey also highlighted limited choice and availability in comparison to synthetic alternatives. This suggests a substantial opportunity for growth in the herbal cosmetic industry, emphasizing the need for increased accessibility to meet the growing demand in Sikkim and beyond.     The Neuropharmacological Properties of Malkangni (Celastrus paniculatus Willd.): Insights from Unani Medicine and Pharmacological Research: A Review

    Malkangni, also known as Celastrus paniculatus Willd., is a herb widely used in the Unani system of medicine for its neuropharmacological properties. The seeds and oil of Malkangni have therapeutic benefits, including enhancing memory and cognitive functions. Malkangni exhibits a range of pharmacological activities, including neuroprotective, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. It has shown potential to improve learning and memory, sedation, and anti-convulsive properties and treat conditions such as leprosy, rheumatism, diarrhea, and arthritis. The diverse pharmacological activities of Malkangni suggest its potential in treating various health conditions. This review aims to describe the medicinal properties and therapeutic applications of Malkangni through the perspective of Unani medicine and its phytochemical and pharmacological studies.     Enhancement of Solubility and Dissolution Rate of Simvastatin Tablets by Liquisolid Compact Approach

    The aim of the current work was to improve the solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble drug, simvastatin (SM) by using the liquisolid compact technique (LS; SM-LS). Liquid load factors, and excipient ratios were used to calculate the required amounts of excipients necessary to prepare the SM-LS and compressed to tablets according to mathematical models. Avicel PH102, Aerosil 200 and Crosspovidone (CP) was used as carrier, coating material and disintegrant, respectively. Drug-excipient mixtures were evaluated compatibility by Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Prepared SM-LS formulations were evaluated for various pre-compression and post-compressional parameters, in-vitro dissolution, and stability studies (40 ± 2°C / 75 ± 5% RH) for 3 months. Among the different formulations, LS10 formulation which contains 30% drug, 5% CP, Avicel pH 102: Aerosil 200 (1:10) showed 14-folds increase in dissolution rate when compared with pure SM powder. FTIR-ATR and DSC studies confirmed that there was no interaction between the drug and excipients. Further, the LS10 formulation had shown comparable dissolution profile with commercially available tablet formulation. The LS10 formulation showed no significant changes in the physicochemical properties over 3 months during stability studies. Therefore, the SM loaded LS formulation could be considered as an alternative approach to enhance the solubility and dissolution for commercial formulations.     A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Self-instructional Module on Knowledge Regarding Risk factors and prevention of Peptic Ulcer Disease Among Adults in a Selected Rural Areas of Udaipur

    Background and Objectives: Prevention of peptic ulcer disease is an important determinant of health over the course of life. The early years of life are a period of considerable opportunity for growth or vulnerability to harm. Therefore, it is of great importance that an adult should be aware about the risk factors and various ways to prevent peptic ulcer disease as possible This study aimed to assess the knowledge of adults regarding risk factors and prevention of peptic ulcer disease among selected rural areas of Udaipur. Method: A pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was adopted. The study involved 50 adults with in a selected rural area at Udaipur. Data collection included pre-test and post-test assessments of knowledge, demographic surveys, and statistical analysis to evaluate knowledge changes and associations. The self-instructional module was distributed and covered the following areas like: Introduction, Definition, Causes, Risk factors & Prevention. The effectiveness was measured by comparing pre-test and post-test scores, and associations were analyzed using chi-square tests. Results: The data revels that 60% of adult had inadequate knowledge, 24% had moderately adequate knowledge and only 16% had adequate knowledge in pre-test and that 68% had adequate knowledge 14% had moderately adequate knowledge and only 18% had inadequate knowledge in post-test. After the intervention, majority (34%) of adults had good knowledge level whereas during pre-test only (8%) of adults had good knowledge Before intervention the mean knowledge score was 20.22. After intervention, the mean knowledge score was increased to 22.37. Statistically there was a significant difference in the mean knowledge score before and after the intervention (t = 10.95*, df = 19, P<0.05). Hence the hypothesis, there will be a significant difference in the pre and post-test mean knowledge score after the intervention was accepted.     Plant natural products: A lead for nephroprotection

    An extremely dangerous side effect of type I and type II diabetes is diabetic nephropathy (DN). From the early microproteinuria to end-stage renal failure, it progresses. About one in three diabetics in the US suffer from diabetic nephropathy. Chronic hyperglycemia is the primary cause of diabetic ketoacidosis. Hyperglycemia (HG) has the potential to cause humoral mediators and cytokines to be produced by both resident and non-resident renal cells. These substances may interfere with cell growth, alter renal cell and tissue phenotype and function, interact with proteins, produce advanced glycation end products (AGEs), damage tubules and glomeruli, and ultimately cause kidney disease. Poor blood glucose management is thus a significant risk factor for the onset of DN. An alternate course of treatment for DN may use extracts from herbal remedies. Medicinal plants\u27 bioactive components stop DN from progressing. Attention has to be paid to the role that traditional herbs and medications play in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy, particularly in India where several fruits and herbs are believed to provide health benefits. Natural compounds influence the KEAP1/Nrf2/ARE and NFB pathways in addition to having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The efficacy of entire herbs, plants, or seeds, together with their active components, in treating diabetic nephropathy was investigated in preclinical research. Natural compounds are biologically active substances that come from natural sources and are beneficial for treating specific illnesses. Numerous natural substances, such as glycosides, polysaccharides, terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, and polyphenols, have been shown to enhance DN. The exorbitant expenses associated with contemporary medications suggest that other approaches are necessary for improved DN treatment.     Exploration of Asbab wa Mahiyatul Marazi (Etiopathogenesis) of Iḥtibās al-Tamth (amenorrhea) in comparison to modern medicine: A Literary Research

    Background: Amenorrhea is defined as the cessation of menstruation; it is a significant clinical sign of reproductive dysfunction that affects 1.5-3% of women of childbearing age and is a leading cause of female infertility. The increasing incidence is attributed to better healthcare access and awareness. The Unani system of medicine offers a distinctive perspective on reproductive ailments, yet its terminology and concepts often diverge from modern medical understandings. Research Problem and Aim: This study aims to bridge the gap between classical Unani literature and contemporary medicine by exploring the etiopathogenesis (asbāb wa mahiyatul marazi) of Iḥtibās al-Tamth (amenorrhea) and comparing it with conventional medical definition, types, causes and its pathogenesis, thereby enhancing understanding of it from both perspectives. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted in 2023, that includes: The primary and main sources of collection of material were from classical published books, manuscripts and their translations. The second type of sources of collection of material were from different types of available published and unpublished literature related to study topic i.e. journals, proceedings, thesis, reports, souvenir, dissertations etc. The third type of sources were from authentic digital material i.e. trusted online websites i.e. PubMed, internet archive etc. Results/Findings: The research revealed a structured understanding of Iḥtibās al-Tamth in Unani literature, highlighting its nuanced classification and etiological factors in comparison to conventional medicine. The findings underscore the potential for integrating Unani insights into contemporary gynaecological practices. Implications: This exploration contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of Iḥtibās al-Tamth (amenorrhea), suggesting that Unani medicine\u27s holistic approach may offer alternative treatment avenues that could mitigate the side effects associated with conventional hormonal therapies.     Effectiveness of Citicoline versus Citicoline with Piracetam in Moderate to Severe Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients: A Quasi Experimental Prospective Study

    Stroke is a sudden cerebral root neurologic collapse, a major cause for global morbidity and death, necessitates the use of neuroprotectants to prevent further damage to ischemic decline. Citicoline and piracetam are widely used as neuro-protectives, however their benefits in Acute Ischemic Stroke have not yet been established. This prospective, quasi-experimental study compared the effectiveness of citicoline (Group A) and citicoline with piracetam combination (Group B) in moderate-to-severe patients. 75 patients were divided into two groups (25 in Group A and 50 in Group B) and followed for a period of 90 days. Their cognitive and functioning events were examined using National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and Barthel Index (BI). There is no discernible difference (p > 0.05) amongst the two groups by NIHSS whereas, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in mRS and BI. After 90 days, Group A patients significantly progressed in terms of overall functional and cognitive improvement. The administration of citicoline within the first 24 hours of a stroke helps to prevent further sequelae and minimizes the severity of AIS. This study concludes that citicoline alone responds better than piracetam combination, but its neuroprotective properties have not been proven. Keywords: Acute Ischemic Stroke. Citicoline. Piracetam.     Phytochemical and Ethnopharmacological Review of Till Safeed (Sesamum indicum Linn.)

    Within the management of health care, the traditional system of medicine remains indispensable. The Unani system of medicine treats a variety of illnesses with a range of medications derived from plants. Historically, people have utilized sesamum indicum seeds as a medicinal ingredient. Various parts of the plant have been used by traditional physicians. However, the dried seed and oil are commonly used as Till in Unani Medicine. The plant has a very long history of use as a medicinal herb. It can be used on its own or in compound pharmacopeial compositions with other medications. Till Safeed is an annual plant of family Pedaliaceae and this review article aims to describe morphological characteristics, phytochemistry, ethnobotanical uses and therapeutic properties of Till Safeed. So that subsequent study on any novel therapeutic activity based on phytochemistry can be conducted with greater simplicity and to support the revalidation of the drug\u27s scientifically claimed actions as mentioned in classical literatures. We systematically searched classical Unani literature, online data sources (PubMed, Google scholar, Elsevier, Science Direct and Research Gate) and offline encyclopaedia and books on medicinal plants for the relevant data on Till Safeed. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, tocopherols, essential minerals, and a special class of phenylpropanoid chemicals called lignans—which include sesamin, sesamol, and sesamolin—are among the bioactive ingredients found in till seeds. The pharmacological characteristics of sesame lignans include. Antioxidant, antibacterial, antiproliferative, cholesterol-lowering, hepatic fatty acid oxidation enzyme-increasing, and anti-hypertensive properties.     The stability and reactivity of the five (5) 2-[(benzimidazolyl)methylthio]-4,5-diphenylimidazole derivatives were studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31+ G (d, p) level. Analysis of the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map and determination of the dual descriptor showed that nitrogen N13, sulfur S5 and carbons C19 and C21 are nucleophilic. They are therefore susceptible to electrophilic attack. The nitrogens N2, N3 and N14 are shared between electrophilic and nucleophilic sites. The study of the chemical reactivity of our compounds was carried out based on the analysis of molecular frontier orbitals (HOMO and LUMO), energy gap (ΔƐ), chemical hardness (η), electrophilicity (ω) and chemical softness (S). Compound 1 was found to be the most stable, the least reactive and electron-donating. This study also opens up a new way of synthesizing biologically active molecules by modulating the C19 carbon with inductive electroattractant groups.
