Utilizing Group Discussion Technique in Developing Speaking Skill in an EFL Classroom
Get PDFThis study aims to identify students’ speaking skills in the English Department at UIN Datokarama Palu that could be developed through group discussion techniques. It was designed as collaborative classroom action research and divided into two cycles. Data came from class observation, field notes, a questionnaire, and a speaking test over six meetings of speaking lessons on the second term of the semester. The research included 22 students. The researcher identified the students’ speaking skill development based on the criteria of success established. The findings showed that 11 students (50%) acquired it, and 11 students (50%) fizzled in the first cycle. The researcher continued to the next cycle since the students’ speaking achievement did not meet the criteria of success yet. Some improvements were made in order to cover the drawbacks in the first cycle, such as rearranging the members of the group and emphasizing teaching on the use of 'opened-ended questions’. There were 18 students (81.8%) who acquired it, and just 4 students (18.2%) fizzled in the second cycle. Besides, all students felt challenged to participate in group discussions. However, their participation varied greatly among the individual students. An interesting implication of this research was that students’ speaking skills could be developed through group discussion techniques
The Investigation of Constraints Faced by Parents in Introducing English to Young Learners: A Descriptive Study
Get PDFAn increasingly popular practice in education across the globe is teaching young students a second language, primarily English. This study investigates the various constraints and challenges encountered by parents as they endeavor to introduce English to their young children. The research aims to shed light on the multifaceted factors that influence language learning in early childhood. This research was conducted qualitatively by using research instruments in the form of interviews with 8 parents as  of data collection. This study categorizes several constrains faced by parents in the context of teaching their children English. The results draw attention to a number of important limitations, parents faced some constrains, such as lack of English skill, limited exposure to English, time constrains, cultural barriers, and financial constrain. In addition, parental time limits, restricted access to good language resources, socioeconomic variables, and varying parental language skill levels. The study also explores psychological barriers such as parents' fears of bilingualism, worries about confusing their kids, and misunderstandings regarding early language acquisition.Â
How Mr. Bean Film Influence Student’s Engagement in Learning Tenses
Get PDFThis research concentrates to analyze student’s engagement in learning English in online environment amid Covid 19. Mr. Bean film used in this study to help students understand English tenses for EFL classroom. A random choice of English subject was made with 21 students from Technique Information of Computer Science faculty at Universitas Al Asyariah Mandar Indonesia. The English tenses content and language level difficulty based on a Mr. Bean film was chosen in teaching were: simple present tense, present continuous, Present perfect, past simple. They looked at the Mr. Bean film, analyze the tenses, re write the tenses in sentences then create their own tenses. After the film, the participants replied to material understanding and questions by retelling on their video. The collected data were subject to descriptive qualitative. The findings showed that Mr. Bean film have a positive effect on English understanding of tenses content. It can be argued that the participants better understand the English tenses with film. In addition, it is found in this study student’s engagement increase and they were motivated to learn English tenses. The teacher's pedagogy is to use a certain Mr. Bean film to enhance the student’s motivation, engagement and help to be easier to understanding tenses
The Implementation of Merdeka Belajar Curriculum: Teachers Perception

The methodology utilized in this study is qualitative, which depicts the state of the subject and the data obtained in the midst of discernment and questions so that it becomes important information and is viably caught on by readers. The majority of this opinion was criticized by teachers regarding a course of action, requiring books, outreach from the government, and teachers' need to understand the Merdeka Belajar Instructive modules. The conceivable course of action was for the teacher to reflect and survey and, after that, ask for advice from teachers, companions, and the deputy head of the instructive programs so that they were better orchestrated to go up against the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum. Schools must complete a package book included in the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, and the government must increase the socialization of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum
The Scholars’ Perceptions of Integrating Popular Culture into Academic Speaking and Writing
Get PDFThis research explores the impact of integrating popular culture elements such as music, film, and social media on language acquisition and overall student learning. Through surveys and questionnaires, the study examines students' perceptions of pop culture's role in their educational journey. A survey was conducted with 36 pre-service teachers at a private university in Jakarta to support this research. A descriptive statistical analysis of the data is conducted to identify trends and patterns in learner experiences.This study argues that popular culture, with its wealth of authentic materials, can serve as a valuable tool for effective teaching and learning for pre-service teachers in the EFL context. While recognizing the potential benefits of increased engagement and cultural understanding, the research also addresses challenges like limited vocabulary exposure and the need for careful material selection. Ultimately, this study aims to promote the effective integration of popular culture into EFL Academic Speaking and Writing classrooms by identifying best practices and addressing the diverse needs of learners. The findings of this study have the potential to further motivate pre-service teachers to engage in English language teaching and learning, as well as enhance their communicative and socio-cultural competence
Integrating Cloud Technology in Language Learning: Development of a Basic English Grammar E-Book
Get PDFThis study aimed to investigate the development of a cloud-integrated e-book intended to enhance Basic English Grammar training for first-semester students in the English Education Program. A Research and Development (R&D) methodology employing the ADDIE model was utilized, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected using pre-test, post-test, interviews, and questionnaires. The results indicated a notable enhancement in student performance, with an average increase of 16.573 points (from M = 61.37 to M = 77.95) and a p-value of 0.000, substantiating the efficacy of the intervention. Furthermore, qualitative feedback revealed a significant demand for modern and interactive materials, highlighting the imperative to include technology into educational tools. The cloud-based e-book seeks to deliver accessible, engaging, and adaptable grammar instruction, facilitating ongoing updating and real-time collaboration. This unique technology solves the constraints of traditional teaching materials and supports consistent learning results, boosting students' understanding of English grammar and enhancing their overall educational experience
EFL Teachers Challenges in Designing Assessment Material for Students’ Listening Skills
Get PDFThis study investigates the challenges EFL teachers face when designing listening assessment materials, with a focus on understanding these obstacles and identifying strategies to address them. The research aims to explore the alignment of assessment practices with student proficiency levels, resource accessibility, and the impact of time constraints on assessment quality. The study involves eight active English teachers from diverse educational institutions as participants. Data were collected using an online questionnaire designed to gather insights into teachers’ perspectives and strategies, guided by the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. This structured framework facilitated a comprehensive analysis of contextual needs, available resources, procedural approaches, and assessment outcomes. The data were analyzed descriptively using Google Forms, with key findings highlighting significant challenges in sourcing appropriate audio materials, ensuring inclusivity and validity, and managing time for creating bespoke assessments. Results revealed that while 50% of teachers successfully aligned assessments with student abilities, 25% faced difficulties in selecting suitable materials due to resource limitations. Teachers frequently relied on self-created or freely available online resources and employed pre-made tests due to time constraints. Despite these efforts, gaps in assessment literacy and resource access persisted. The study underscores the need for professional development programs to enhance language assessment literacy, improved access to diverse, high-quality audio materials, and systemic support to address these challenges. By addressing these issues, this research contributes to more effective listening assessment practices, fostering equitable and comprehensive EFL education
The Effectiveness of the TPACK-Based Problem Based Learning Model on the Learning Outcomes
Get PDFThis study aims to determine the disparity in learning outcomes between students instructed through the TPACK-based Problem-Based Learning model in Class X at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang, as well as to examine the teaching and learning processes employed by the educators. The used research methodology is quantitative research. The research sample included class X1 with 35 students as the experimental group and class X2 with 35 students as the control group. Data collecting methods using tools include assessments and interviews. The data were analyzed with an independent samples t-test in SPSS 26. The findings indicated that the t-obtained (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.002 lower than the t-table value of 0.05, leading to the conclusion that a disparity exists in student learning outcomes between those instructed using the TPACK-based PBL model and those taught via traditional methods. The PBL methodology is beneficial for students in grade X at SMA Negeri 13 Palembang. Moreover, the interview results indicated that teachers exclusively employ a conventional instructional model, characterized by mere explanations and textbook exercises. Additionally, challenges encountered in the classroom learning process include insufficient school facilities, particularly the lack of internet connectivity, hindering access to available information, as well as the teachers' limited proficiency in utilizing existing technology.
Distribution of Scientific paper from Sulawesi Island State Universities on Social Media Using an Almetric Approach
No full textAltmetric is metrics and data information to measure the interaction of scientific paper on social media through the data obtained. This study examines the distribution of scientific papers of Sulawesi island state universities on social media. This study uses a quantitative descriptive. The stages of this research consist of problem identification, data collection, data pre-processing, altmetrics approach analysis and discussion results. This research was conducted online by taking data in the form of scientific paper citation data including keywords affiliated with the Sulawesi Island state university and the year being limited from 2020-2022, while social media data was obtained from Altmetrics.com by extracting DOIs from every scientific publication on Scopus. com. The social media that are the focus of this research are Twitter, Facebook, Blog, and Mendeley. The results of this research show that the distribution of scientific papers of state universities on the island of Sulawesi on social media is Mendeley with a total of 15,378 Readers, Twitter with 3,124 Mentions, Blogs with 77 Posted and Facebook with 30 Shared. These results show that apart from being popular on academic platforms or international journals (Scopus), the public universities on the island of Sulawesi are also popular on Mendeley's social media platforms, Twitter, Blogs, Facebook.
Inventarisasi Karya Ulama di Wilayah Malang
No full textTradisi intelektual para ulama telah menghasilkan beragam kajian dalam bidang keislaman. Kajian karya ulama ini dilakukan dengan metode penelitian kualitatif sehingga dapat menggali fenomena lebih luas dan mendalam sesuai dengan kondisi lapangan ketika melakukan observasi. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan melalui observasi langsung dan wawancara pada informan terkait. Observasi akan dilakukan selama 6 (enam) bulan dengan menelusuri keberadaan karya tulis ulama yang ada di pondok-pondok pesantren baik di Kabupaten maupun Kota Malang, Jawa Timur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meninventarisasi karya hasil pemikiran para ulama di wiayah Malang. Penelitian ini berhasil menginventarisasi 34 karya ulama dengan beragam bidang kajian atau subjek keilmuan meliputi hadis, sekte dan aliran agama Islam, fikih, doa dan wirid, tasawuf, aqidah, akhlaq, tata bahasa, dan tauhid. Pondok pesantren yang ada di seluruh wilayah Malang merupakan target utama lokasi yang dikunjungi. Peninggalan karya para ulama tentunya menjadi warisan ilmu pengetahuan, sejarah dan budaya yang perlu dilestarikan agar nilai informasi yang telah dihasilkan tidak lekang oleh waktu
