The Effect of the Mahasiswa Mengaji Program on the Qur’an Reading Skills of IAIN Curup Students
In response to growing concerns about the decline of Qur’anic literacy among university students, this mixed-methods study examined both the measurable improvements in reading proficiency resulting from the Mahasiswa Mengaji program—an initiative of the Rector at the State Islamic Institute of Curup (IAIN Curup)—and the contextual factors that facilitated these improvements. A total of 500 students participated in a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, with their Qur’anic reading skills assessed across phonological accuracy, reading fluency, and tajwīd application. Ten participants were purposively selected for in-depth interviews, analyzed using the interactive model, to explore the underlying supports that influenced these outcomes. Quantitative findings showed significant gains in all domains: phonological accuracy (t = 31.276, p < 0.001), reading fluency (t = 40.842, p < 0.001), and tajwīd application (t = 39.525, p < 0.001), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing Qur’anic reading. Complementing this, qualitative results identified eight key enabling supports, namely self-regulated learning, teacher scaffolding and presence, peer support, family motivation, internal drive, accessible learning resources, and consistent practice, that explain the mechanisms behind the observed improvements. Taken together, the integration of statistical evidence and thematic insights demonstrates how the program functions not only as an effective intervention but also as a holistic educational strategy for strengthening Qur’anic reading skills.
International Law Perspective of The State's Preventive Role in Responding to Climate Refugees
Climate change is one of the primary issues widely discussed by the international community, particularly in relation to rising sea levels that threaten island nations. The submergence of state territories has become a major factor driving the emergence of climate refugees, who are forced to leave their home countries in search of shelter elsewhere. As coastal land becomes submerged and uninhabitable, populations are forced to relocate, giving rise to the phenomenon of climate refugees. However, current international legal frameworks do not explicitly recognize climate-induced displacement within the traditional refugee definition under the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. This research used the doctrinal method of legal research and is supported by secondary data based on available literature. This article examines the legal and geopolitical implications of disappearing state territory and explores the preventive role of states in responding to the emergence of climate refugees. Focusing on case studies such as Kiribati and Indonesia’s involvement through regional cooperation, the paper analyzes how states can enact proactive policies, from relocation strategies to transnational partnerships to mitigate future risks. Through doctrinal legal analysis, this study proposes state-centered strategies for strengthening global governance in addressing climate-induced migration. It further explores how states can anticipate and address the potential loss of national territory due to sea level rise in the future

Developing Arabic Speaking Skills through Muhadatsah: A Case Study at Al-Marhamah Puteri Islamic Boarding School
The Muhadatsah program represents an Arabic language learning method that emphasizes speaking practice. While numerous studies have explored language learning theories, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the Muhadatsah program in enhancing speaking proficiency, particularly within the Indonesian context, remains limited. This study aimed to examine the implementation of the Muhadatsah program as a strategy for developing speaking skills among female students (santriwati) at Al-Marhamah Puteri Islamic Boarding School, Sampit, Central Kalimantan. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed inductively. The findings indicate that the Muhadatsah program was effectively implemented and followed established procedures, contributing to the improvement of students’ speaking skills, although challenges related to vocabulary acquisition persisted. One solution introduced was the compulsory submission of new vocabulary outside program hours. This study contributes to filling the gap in the literature on the practical implementation of the Muhadatsah program within the Islamic boarding school context
A Mixed-Methods Needs Analysis for Interactive Multimedia-based Arabic Teaching Materials for Grade 8 at State Islamic Junior High School (MTsN) 17 Tanah Datar
This study aims to analyze students' needs for interactive multimedia-based Arabic teaching materials in grade 8 State Islamic Junior High School (MTsN) 17 Tanah Datar, West Sumatra. Arabic language learning uses textbooks that are still textual and monotonous without any accompanying teaching materials that are interesting and interactive. The approach used was a mixed method, data was collected from 36 students and teachers through interviews, classroom observations, and needs analysis questionnaires. The results of the interviews show that learning Arabic still faces obstacles in the form of conventional and less interesting teaching materials, exercises that have not touched listening and speaking skills, and limited access because it is only available in print form without the support of interactive technology. Observation data shows that Arabic learning is still dominated by teachers with lecture methods, students tend to be passive, interaction and language skills practice are minimal, and only rely on textbooks without media or supporting teaching materials. The results of the questionnaire showed that the majority of respondents (84.65%) strongly supported the development of Arabic teaching materials based on interactive multimedia. This study recommends developing interactive multimedia-based Arabic teaching materials that combine text, audio, video, animation, and self-directed exercises, specifically designed based on students’ real needs to support more engaging and interactive learning. As a practical implication, a prototype or unit template is proposed that integrates short texts, audio narration, micro-videos, and self-checking quizzes for the next stage of development

Islam as Unifier and Divider in Politics and Nation-Building in Modern Sudan
This article analyzes the dual role of Islam in Sudan’s modern history, emphasizing its capacity to unify communities while simultaneously deepening political and social fragmentation. Covering the period from independence in 1956 to the present conflict, it traces how Islamic references shaped legitimacy, governance, and violence. The study employs a qualitative and historical-critical method, drawing on constitutions, Sharia statutes, scholarly works, international reports, and archival news, with triangulation and process tracing ensuring reliability and contextual depth. The findings demonstrate that Islam has repeatedly been instrumentalized to consolidate political power. Early on, Sufi networks such as the Ansar and Khatmiyya promoted cohesion but also entrenched rivalries that destabilized politics. Under Jaafar Nimeiri and the National Islamic Front, state-led Islamization, epitomized by the September Laws, institutionalized exclusivity and marginalized both non-Muslims and dissenting Muslims. This framework intensified conflicts in Darfur and South Sudan, linking Islamization to displacement, atrocities, and gender-based violence. By contrast, inclusive Islamic discourses stressing justice and Maqasid al-Shariah fostered civic trust and opened pathways for negotiation, as reflected in the Juba Peace Agreement. After the 2019 revolution, reforms aimed at separating religion from the state suggested a shift toward inclusivity. Yet renewed war reopened avenues for political instrumentalization: the Sudanese Armed Forces drew on Islamist currents to revive jihadist rhetoric, while the Rapid Support Forces positioned themselves as anti-Islamist actors mixing religious symbolism with secular claims. These dynamics reveal the enduring malleability of Islam in Sudanese politics. The study concludes that inclusive framings encourage unity, while monopolization entrenches division, situating Sudan’s experience within broader debates on religion, authoritarianism, and nation-building in divided societies
Eco-Theological Insights on The Sasi Tradition: Analyzing Environmental Ethics and Sanctions Through Fiqh al-Bi'ah and Islamic Criminal Law
Environmental preservation is a crucial issue that continues to receive attention, especially amid growing concerns about environmental degradation caused by human activities. This study aims to examine the implementation of the sasi mechanism by the people of Negeri Iha, Seram Island, and Ambon and to analyze the cultural significance of the sasi system regarding the concepts of Fiqh al-Bi'ah and Islamic criminal law. Using an empirical approach with qualitative methods, this research explores how the sasi mechanism contributes to community welfare and its relevance to Fiqh al-Bi'ah. The findings reveal that the implementation of the sasi tradition is managed by customary institutions with the authority to determine when sasi is enforced or lifted. There are two forms of traditional natural resource management in Negeri Iha: sasi laut (marine sasi) and sasi darat (land sasi). The study also shows that the sasi tradition's rules, goals, and punishments are similar to those in Fiqh al-Bi'ah. Both try to get the most suitable things done while doing the least environmental harm. Furthermore, violations of the sasi tradition are subject to customary sanctions, including physical punishment, fines, or spiritual consequences, such as the belief that violations could bring curses or illness as divine retribution. This research provides valuable insights into the harmony between the sasi tradition and the principles of Fiqh al-Bi'ah in preserving nature and maintaining the balance between humans and their environment
