    Get PDF
This study aims to explore the effect of phonetic training on the perception of English vowels /iː, ɪ, e, æ/ by Macedonian learners of English. The training is perceptual and combines traditional and communicative-cognitive pronunciation teaching techniques focusing on raising learners’ awareness by exposing them to authentic speech and not requiring them to practice pronunciation. Sixty-two participants were divided into two groups: experimental (n= 31) and control (n= 31). Only the participants in the experimental group received the perceptual training. All participants completed four tests for vowel identification: one pre-test, one post-test and two generalisation tests. The data were analysed for the effect of training on participants’ vowel perception. The results show indicative improvement of the perception of the tested phenetic contrasts, suggesting that the learners’ L2 phonological system is still unstable and developing.

ENHANCING ACCESS TO FINANCE OF SME’S: ROLE OF THE GOVERNEMNT

    Get PDF
There is wide accepted evidence that the SME sector is one of the most important drivers of the economy in each country. The SMEs possibility to develop and to create new jobs becomes a crucial prerequisite for economic growth and development. In addition, many studies and research have concluded that access to finance remains to be a major concern and main obstacle for SMEs growth and development in countries like RN Macedonia. This situation has been deteriorated in past few years by the global economic and energy crises. Therefore, many governments have acknowledged the importance of implementing various policies and programs aimed to support SMEs and their development.  Yet, evaluation and impact assessment of implemented government programs in general is lacking and the effectiveness of such credit schemes has not been demonstrated. The paper will examine the efficiency of subsidized credit lines implemented by Development Bank of North Macedonia with a main goal to promote bank lending to SMEs. It will attempt to assess the cost of the Government and the impact on the “supply side” in providing financing for SME sector. The method used for the research is a questionnaire based survey, composed of multiple choice questions and on-site interviews with bank’s officials. &nbsp

Nowadays, social media dominates the practice of communication, sending words, images, and videos at the speed of light (Seitel, 2011). Users of social networks have the opportunityto write, speak, publish, meet other users, and provide a virtual place for meeting, socializing, andinteracting. Social media gives users the flexibility to configure their user settings, customize theirprofiles to look specific, organize their friends or followers, manage what information they wantto see or don’t want to see, even give feedback information about what they do, etc. Globalizationhas made it possible to perceive the world as a whole, to strengthen the sense of belonging, and not to be excluded from the events that take place somewhere on the other side of the world. This paper aims to analyze the relationship between religion and social media, and the subject ofresearch is addressed through the promotion of religion on social media and specifically refers tothe situation in the Republic of North Macedonia. The main research question is: How is religionpresented on social media? The analysis focuses on the official religious institutions in Macedonia, and through which channels they promote their interests? The primary data source is used usingcontent analysis

Methods of Social Work with Older People at Different Providers of Services for Older People in Croatia

    Get PDF
The demographic data from the last census (2021) in the Republic of Croatia show that the proportion of older people in the total population will increase, as already predicted. With a larger number of older people, the likelihood of needing help with activities of daily living in later stages of life increases, especially among the population of 80 years and older, which leads to an increase in the number of services for the older people. With the development of social services for older people, different methods and approaches are being developed to meet the needs of older people in the community in which they live. The aim of this paper is to examine whether there are methods for working with older people that are used by different service providers for older people in Croatia. The article presents the methods of social work used by various service providers for older people and how they are based on concepts of social work with older people. The study used a qualitative approach with the interview method and the data was processed using the qualitative analysis method. The study involved 12 people who work in institutions and associations that provide services for older people. The results show that different methods of social work are present in the practise of working with older people and that the concepts of social work with older people are represented by service providers in which older people actively participate in the design of activities and services

ANALYSIS OF WARFIGHTING FUNCTIONS– THE UKRAINIAN COUNTEROFFENSIVE IN CONTEXT

    Get PDF
This paper provides a detailed analysis ofwarfighting functions during the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian forces against Russian forces, as well as the efficiencyof warfightingfunctions, which has a significant impact on the results of the war. It will cover the periodfrom the start of the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian forces, from June 2023, when somevictories were recorded by the Ukrainian forces.Through the analysis and processing of confidential and already available information fromsocial networks, media and the Washington Post, and in accordance with the comparisonwith the US doctrine, a special emphasis was placed on one of the warfighting functions inUkrainian counter-offensive, that is, the system for combat service support. The method ofanalyses and synthesis was used to summarize the results and arrive at the conclusion.Hence it is confirmed that in terms of the organization and implementation of the combatservice support warfighting function, the Ukrainian forces have failed to meet the rightrequirements in the right place and at the right time. The main culprit in all of this is the lackof sufficient time for preparation and training of personnel for different models of the sametype of assets that were donated by Western countries during the war, as well as the rejectionof US military officials’ advice to use frontal attack along one axis

In this article, we look into the semantics and pragmatics of the particle zar in the standard Macedonian language, which is used interchangeably with its variant zarem. We argue that zar or zarem is employed in biased polar questions, particularly in contexts where there exists a discrepancy between the speaker’s presupposition and contextual evidence that contradicts it. Our investigation aims to uncover the role of zar/zarem in biased polar questions and determine the discourse functions of zar- questions. To achieve this goal, we conducted an analysis using a sample of questions extracted from contemporary Macedonian prose. The results of our analysis indicate that the particle zar/zarem in biased questions is not obligatory but rather serves to enhance the assertive component at the expense of the inquisitive component in the semantic structure of such questions. This enhancement is reflected in the speaker’s disbelief and surprise regarding the truth of proposition encoded in the question, especially in contradiction contexts. Such semantics enable zar-questions to serve rhetorical purposes or perform indirect claims, thereby functioning as effective persuasion strategies.

This paper explains the strange and gives examples of a comic relief resulting from the strange behaviour in the novel The Invisible Man ([1897] 2010) by Herbert George Wells. The strange can be defined as that which is unusual, extraordinary, and which does not belong to everyday life and routine (i.e., which is contrary to the norm and the expected social behaviour). The strange can both evoke fear and humour or laughter as an unexpected reaction to something serious, which then serves as a mechanism for creating tension that escalates with a plot twist. What is regarded as strange are the stranger Griffin\u27s appearance, his clothes, but also gestures, behaviour and his responses to other characters. The novel combines the comic and the serious, the funny and the horrific; in fact, the strange – the fear it evokes and the terror caused by it – does not necessarily exist in isolation from the comic or the bizarre. All these elements are a crucial part of the structure of the novel, which depicts scenes of strange and unusual occurrences, characters, and events producing a comic effect. The author uses the scenes that cause a potential comic effect as building mechanisms, which gradually unveil the unexpected culminating in an unusual plot twist towards the end of the novel. The Invisible man is neither a comic work nor a horror story although it combines both elements of humour and terror, which function as complementary literary devices.

Multidimensional child poverty and its determinants: Empirical evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

    Get PDF
Poverty has been a subject of global discourse most especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where little progress has been achieved. Most literature sources regard poverty mainly as a household threat rather than one to affects the children living within the household. Thus, through a multidimensional approach, this study analyses poverty, specifically in the context of its effect on children. In carrying out this study, the General Household Survey data for Nigeria (the most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa) for 2018/2019 obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) was used. Descriptive statistics, the Multidimensional Poverty Measure, and the Tobit Regression Model were employed in this study. The results showed that there are more male children (52.17%) than females (47.83%), with most of the children falling within the middle-age group (45.51%). Less than half of the household heads were found to be literate, while the mean size of the household amounted to nine. This study found that the poverty dimension mainly affecting the research sample of Nigerian children was their deprivation in terms of sanitation, while the least significant dimension was their lack of food. Child poverty is prevalent among the three respective age groups of children, among rural dwellers (57.16%), and among residents in the northern divide of the country.  The rural sector, the residents in the northeastern region of the country, and the gender of the household head were found to be significant variables influencing child poverty in Nigeria. As such, poverty reduction strategies directed towards the rural sector, the northern region, and the identified age groups of children should be of primary focus in tackling child poverty in Nigeria to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG1) - “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”
