INTERRELIGIOUS COUNCIL IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE AND MEDIA-MEDIATED REALITY
In BiH, in 1997, a year after the constitution of the state on the basis of the Dayton Agreementand the end of the civil war, the Interreligious Council was formed on the initiative of religiousleaders and it was the first one under that name in the world. The path to reconciliation amongpeople and development of a stable society in BiH should lead through interreligious dialogue, andthe Interreligious Council strives to achieve that goal, in areas where the influence of churches andreligious communities is inviolable. The area of indisputable influence of the Interreligious Councilshould be sacred objects within which specific communication takes place between religiousleaders and believers. In that space, thoughts and views were expressed by members of the IslamicCommunity in BiH, imam Amir Mahić and theologian Muharem Štulanović. After the prayers in themosques, imams called the Serbian Orthodox Church a sect, its first enlightener, Saint Sava, theoriginator of fascism, with derogatory terms about the Serbian people. The public was informedabout the events in the mosques in Kozarac and Bihać through the media, with different narratives, while the Interreligious Council failed to represent the proclaimed goals and ideas of interreligiousdialogue. After more than two and a half decades of existence, there is no representative ofthe Serbian Orthodox Church in the Interreligious Council in BiH, because Metropolitan Bishop ofDabar-Bosna Hrizostom resigned from the Council, and the interreligious dialogue died down. Thestatements and analyzes presented in this paper are based on data obtained from research conductedthrough in-depth interviews with members of the Interreligious Council in BiH, analysis ofthe content of texts published in the media about the aforementioned cases in January 2023, andcomparative analysis, with the aim of elucidating the possibility of reviving interreligious dialogue, mutual understanding and the role of the media in those processes
Being defined as a concept which entails awareness of one’s own and other people’s emotions and ability to manage those emotions as well as to interpret them in various interpersonal engagements (Goleman, 1998), emotional intelligence (EI) is found to correlate with academic performance, especially with professions with an affective component, including translation and interpreting (Bontempo, 2009; Hubscher-Davidson, 2007). Relying on the results received from the bilateral project “Possibilities for Enhancing Emotional Intelligence as a Generic Competence in Translation and Interpreting Students” (Popovska et al. 2019: 263–276), this paper aims at exploring the possibilities for EI skills enhancement in interpreting students with a view to raising the awareness of the benefits of EI for both teachers and students and adopting new perspectives on career advancement. The results show that the development of EI skills in interpreting students is very important and provides an opportunity for teachers to gain an invaluable insight into the professional development of students and to get inspired to be more creative in improving teaching methodology.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the selection of Macedonian poetry in Kinga Netman-Multanovska’s book Warsaw Draws Skopje. In addition to exceptional documentary prose, the book provides a literary topographic map of the city. 23 authors from different generations with a total of 39 selected fragments of different poems are portrayed, from authors who worked in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, authors who show the more archaic layer of the already standardized Macedonian language, to the youngest authors. By analysing the literary topographic map of the city through the verses of the Macedonian poets, prose works and published anthological and other works, the paper aims at providing a broad view of Skopje as a theme in contemporary Macedonian literature. The analysis of Netman-Multanovska’s book shows that it is precisely the verses of Macedonian poets that contribute to building the image of Skopje as an ideal place that has managed to bring the East and the West together architecturally, as well as politically, sociologically and culturally.
BILATERAL INVESTMENT TREATIES AS A MEANS FOR ADVANCEMENT OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT
The aim of the analysis of BITs as a method for advancement of foreign direct investment is to coverseveral important topics. Those are: defining the term and the concept, determining its historicdevelopment, explaining its basic characteristics, analyzing their features and the reasons forconcluding them. BITs serve a purpose of advancing the economic linkages of the signatory parties, with an ultimate objective of development or economic advancement. From the eighteenth centuryonward the forerunners of the modern BITs were the historic so-called Friendship, Commerce andNavigation (FCN) agreements that were concluded by the major colonial powers as well as the USA.The key difference between the FCN treaties and modern BITs is that the FCN instruments weredesigned at a time when international commerce largely consisted of trading in goods by merchants.Irrespective of the number of BITs concluded, their basic characteristics are more or less the same -they are designed to cover the following five substantive areas: (i) definition of investment andinvestor; (ii) admission of foreign investors; (iii) fair and equitable treatment of investors; (iv)compensation in the event of expropriation; and (v) methods of settling disputes. Formally, BITsregulate FDI-related issues such as admission, treatment, expropriation, and the settlement of disputesat the bilateral level. Several important features are relevant for BITs: are concluded between capitalexportingstates and capital importing states, are differentiated phases of pro-investor attitude andphases of state-centred thinking, cover mechanism to expand international standards and to codify lexspecialis, arises the question whether exhaustion of local remedies is required. One important reasonto conclude BITs being analyzed is certainly the fact that they have instilled a sense of security inforeign investors. Finally, the reasons for concluding BITs are being presented
Преведувачкиот подвиг на Драги Михајловски: преводот како уметност
This article is inspired by the event organized on the occasion of celebrating the life and work of our prominent university teacher, author and translator Dragi Mihajlovski. The author of the article has already written on Dragi Mihajovski as a translator and therefore certain segments from the previously published article are incorporated in this text as well. It focuses on Dragi Mihajlovski as a translator and, more specifically, as the translator of all of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets into Macedonian, an extraordinary achievement in terms of its scope and as a linguistic challenge. Its objective is to discuss the indelible mark that Mihajlovski’s endeavors in the field of translation and translation theory have left on our cultural, literary and linguistic context, simultaneously examining the process of translation as a re-writing and re-creating of the original. The article looks at the process of translation and its various aspects and stages through the lens of the methods required to reach the point where the translation becomes a work of art in and of itself, something that modern translation theories recognize as the ultimate goal of every literary translation. In this context, it is evident that Dragi Mihajlovski’s exceptional achievements in the field of translation can rightfully be defined as art. This article is inspired by the event organized on the occasion of celebrating the life and work of our prominent university teacher, author and translator Dragi Mihajlovski. Adolescents\u27 Lived Experiences of COVID-19
Adolescents experienced COVID-19 and the implementation of lockdown measures in various ways. The developmental phase of middle adolescence is a pivotal period characterised by various cognitive and social processes that contribute significantly to the creation of adolescents\u27 identity. During this period, adolescents encounter significant events, both in terms of their personal growth and their lived experiences. These events may include transitioning to high school, obtaining their learner\u27s licences, and other milestones. The implementation of lockdown measures and stay-at-home orders resulted in adolescents being restricted to their residential settings with their family members. Understanding adolescents’ lived experiences of COVID-19 was described through a qualitative phenomenological descriptive research design. The data collection consisted of individual semi-structured interviews with 16 participants in Johannesburg (Gauteng), using an interview schedule. The data was analysed using thematic content analysis and three themes emerged: (1) Participants’ experience of how COVID-19 Influenced their relationships, (2) Participants’ experience of how COVID-19 impacted their mental health, and (3) Protective factors and risk factors that impacted their experience of COVID-19 positively or negatively. From this, conclusions have been drawn, as well as recommendations for future research and practice. Initiatives that can potentially be used to support adolescents during a crisis period, such as a pandemic, include interventions related to mental health, academic performance, and physical well-being
THE POSITION AND ROLE OF STATE AND NON-STATE ACTORS IN THE 21st CENTURY
According to the classical dichotomy of the realist theory of interest representation, the subjects acting on the national and international scene are defined as state and nonstate actors in the context of their content and position. Until the turn of the 21st century, the state-centric model of interaction is characteristic, where states are the main actors dominating national and world politics, although they are not the sole ones. Examples of state actors are bureaucratically organized state institutions and governing bodies, foreign policy institutions, the army, the police, intelligence agencies, etc. The gradual rise of non-state actors, as a result of the diffusion of power and monopolistic authorities of the state, seen through the prism of recent events such as the Arab Spring, the rise of ISIS, the migrant crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, etc., illustrate that many contemporary challenges to international order and security inevitably involve, among others, non-state actors.Examples of non-state actors include private military and security companies, the media, criminal organizations, terrorist groups, non-governmental organizations, as well as multinational corporations, lobby groups, organized social or ethnic group movements, and others. Through the application of qualitative deductive methodology, analysis of case studies and through linear interpolation of quantitative data in the context of this paper, the main questions arising from this social phenomenology are elaborated: their adjunction, regulation, with special reference to their place and role in society, in the direction of their positioning and categorization of meaning, from where the main hypothesis of this paper is drawn
MANAGING CONTEMPORARY SECURITY THREATS IN THE LIGHT OF THE SYSTEMS THEORY - Case Study: COVID-19
The crisis that emerged from the COVID-19 epidemic represents a complex problem situation, characterized by an enormous number of various subjective and objective factors, as a result of multiple co-determination, mutual causality and variable interactions between them. Furthermore, there is a significantly high level of uncertainty, primarily based on the fact that it is about relatively new and unknown risk factors, and its initial changes led to dramatic consequences in every aspect of life on national, regional and global levels, in an extremely short time. The effect of the time “compression” and the ultimate destructive potential of the epidemic have been added to already limited possibilities in the aspect of planning and decision-making, in order to manage the crisis situation as adequately as possible. Starting with an interdisciplinary approach to resolving complex problems, by exceeding the “artificial” dichotomy between natural and social sciences, the system approach emerges as the most adequate approach for managing existing crises. Finally, the co-authorsreviewed different ways of managing crisis situation, or different strategies for exceeding crises (specifically the pragmatist approach), the potential of the short-term prognoses and predictions (with an accent on the famous scenario-planning method), including the implications of the strategic “surprises” (black swans, black elephants, or dragon kings)
