    Integrated social assistance for refugees: governance dynamics in Tuscany’s Reception and Integration System projects

    Introduction. Overcoming methodological nationalism is essential to understanding how social assistance policies for refugees and asylum seekers operate within the Italian context. Persistent delays by the national government in the implementation of reception and integration policies have long been offset by the efforts of local authorities and civil society organisations. As a result, significant territorial disparities have emerged, becoming a structural feature of the Italian context. Given these disparities and the central role played by local actors, Italy represents a particularly relevant case for examining how localised social work practices with refugees address these ongoing challenges. Social workers can play a pivotal role as mediators among diverse stakeholders—including institutional actors, migrant families, and local communities—fostering mutual engagement and promoting integrated models of intervention. Methods. Drawing on a multilevel governance perspective, this article explores the provision of social assistance to refugees and asylum seekers in Italy, with particular attention to the challenges and good practices emerging from the heterogeneity of reception projects and territorial welfare systems. The analysis combines secondary sources—such as institutional documents, project reports, and existing literature—with primary data. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with coordinators of SAI (Reception and Integration System) projects in Tuscany to gain deeper insights into stakeholders’ perspectives and the operational dynamics of the reception system. The article is based on research carried out within the Global-ANSWER project and focuses on the Tuscan model of reception, characterised by small- and medium-sized facilities and an integrated governance approach. This model offers a valuable case for analysing how social assistance is organised and implemented at the local level. Results. The analysis of qualitative data gathered through interviews with SAI project representatives identifies three distinct governance models of social assistance, each reflecting varying degrees of institutional coordination, resource integration, and modes of social workers involvement. The findings point to notable differences in how services are structured across territories, while confirming the key role of social workers in linking reception interventions with local welfare systems. Discussion and conclusions. Persistent resource constraints, service fragmentation, and the delegation of welfare responsibilities to third-sector organisations emerge as key obstacles to effective and sustainable interventions. By examining an example of good practice developed in Tuscany to strengthen coordination among social workers, public institutions, and third-sector actors, the article underscores the importance of investigating localised social work practices with refugees to better understand both the systemic barriers and the innovative strategies shaping social work with displaced populations. Future research should further examine how local governance configurations influence these practices, identifying the conditions that support or hinder inclusive and effective interventions.

    Inculcar la virtuosidad: las católicas y los cuentos infantiles en la España de la Restauración (1874-1923).

    Children’s literature is a crucial tool for shaping a child’s worldview, including their perceptions of gender roles and family. Recognising this, during the Bourbon Restoration (1874-1923), some Spa-nish Catholic women wrote tales to instil their ideals of femininity and masculinity in young readers. These authors actively contributed to the broader project of re-Christianising Spanish masculinity. Their stories presented religious piety and practice as paramount virtues for both boys and girls. The texts showed little distinction between the sexes regarding their capacity for piety or religiosity, reflecting traditional Catholic principles. Nonetheless, while religious devotion was presented as a universal virtue, these writers also assigned specific, gender-exclusive traits and virtues to their characters.La literatura infantil contribuye a que los/as niños/as construyan y desarrollen su comprensión del mundo, incluido lo que debería ser idealmente un hombre, una mujer y una familia. Conscientes de ello, durante la Restauración (1874-1923) algunas mujeres católicas españolas buscaron inculcar y fomentar a través de los cuentos sus concepciones ideales acerca de la feminidad y la masculinidad, en este último caso intentando colaborar con el proyecto de recristianización de la masculinidad española. Siguiendo sus creencias religiosas, en sus relatos hicieron un esfuerzo por presentar las actitudes y las prácticas piadosas como las mejores virtudes que tanto los niños/hombres como las niñas/mujeres podían poseer. En esta cuestión apenas había diferencias entre sexos, pues el catoli- cismo tradicionalmente no establecía distinciones por sexo en este sentido. Sin embargo, hubo un conjunto de características y virtudes que las cuentistas católicas asignaron privativamente a hombres o a mujeres

    Actividad antidepresiva y ansiolítica de Safoof-i Sawda: una formulación poliherbal de Unani en ratas

    Introduction: Safoof-i Sawda (SS) is a traditional Unani medicine which is used for the treatment of neurological disorders. The study has been performed to evaluate the antidepressant & anxiolytic activity of SS in animals. Method: Anti-depressant activity of SS was evaluated using FST and TST. NISFL test, OFE, and LD test were performed to study the anxiolytic activity. Imipramine (10 mg/kg, p.o.) & Diazepam (1 mg/kg, p.o.) were given as comparator. One way analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison test was used. Results: Immobility time is reduced in two lower dose group in both FST and TST model. Feeding latency was reduced in all SS treated groups (P<0.05; P<0.01). In LD test model, SS reduced latency to enter light compartment at 1000 & 1500 mg/kg. Statistical evaluation of frequency to transfers between dark to light chamber showed that diazepam, SS 1000 mg/kg & SS 1500 mg/kg caused a significantly higher transfer frequency. Time spent in light chamber was significantly increased in diazepam group (P<0.05), SS 1000 mg/kg (P<0.05) & SS 1500 mg/kg (P<0.01). Conclusions: SS showed significant anti-depressant activity at two lower tested doses in FST & TST. Anxiolytic effect of the SS was observed at all three tested doses in NISFL test model, while in LD test model, two higher doses of SS showed a significant anxiolytic effect. In OFE test model, despite the increase in parameters in SS group in comparison with vehicle control, none of the three tested dose of SS showed statistically significant effect.Introducción: Safoof-I Sawda (SS) es un medicamento UNANI tradicional que se utiliza para el tratamiento de trastornos neurológicos. El estudio se ha realizado para evaluar la actividad antidepresiva y ansiolítica de SS en animales. Método: La actividad antidepresiva de SS se evaluó utilizando prueba de natación forzada y prueba de suspensión de cola. Se realizaron tres pruebas para estudiar la actividad ansiolítica. Imipramina(10 mg/kg, p.o.) y Diazepam(1 mg/kg, p.o.) se administraron como comparadores. Se utilizó un análisis de varianza de una vía seguido de la prueba de comparación múltiple de Tukey. Resultados: El tiempo de inmovilidad se reduce en dos grupos de dosis más bajas en ambos modelos. La latencia de alimentación se redujo en todos los grupos tratados con SS (P < 0,05; P < 0,01). En el modelo de prueba LD, SS redujo la latencia para entrar en el compartimento de luz a 1000 y 1500 mg/kg. La evaluación estadística de la frecuencia de transferencias entre la cámara oscura y la cámara iluminada mostró que el diazepam, SS 1000 mg/kg y SS 1500 mg/kg causaron una frecuencia de transferencia significativamente mayor. El tiempo pasado en la cámara iluminada se incrementó significativamente en el grupo de diazepam (P < 0,05), SS 1000 mg/kg (P < 0,05) y SS 1500 mg/kg (P < 0,01). Conclusiones: SS mostró una actividad antidepresiva significativa en dos dosis bajas probadas. El efecto ansiolítico del SS se observó en las tres dosis probadas en el modelo de prueba supresión de la latencia de alimentación inducida por la novedad, mientras que en el modelo de prueba claro oscuro, dos dosis más altas de SS mostraron un efecto ansiolítico significativo. En el modelo de prueba exploración de campo abierto, a pesar del aumento en los parámetros en el grupo SS en comparación con el control de vehículo, ninguna de las tres dosis probadas de SS mostró un efecto estadísticamente significativo

    The image called Pura y Limpia is a polychrome wooden sculpture that is worshiped in a chapel-street altarpiece adjacent to the Postigo del Aceite, in Seville. This sculpture is linked to the work of the sculptor of Utrera Francisco Antonio Ruiz Gijón (1653-1720?), supported by the detailed study that has been carried out on the occasion of the recent conservation and restoration work carried out on the work.La imagen denominada Pura y Limpia es una escultura en madera policromada que recibe culto en una capilla-retablo callejero adyacente al Postigo del Aceite, en Sevilla.     The unpublished Crucified from the monastery of the Conceptionists of San José de Lima is unveiled. The direct study and formal analysis of the work takes us to the first decades of the 1600s, particularly when comparing it with the work of the Sevillian Martín Alonso de Mesa and his documented Crucified of the Cathedral of Arica. From all this an obvious parallelism emerges that supports the attribution to this sculptor, undoubtedly the best of the viceroyalty of Peru in those years.Se da a conocer el Crucificado inédito del monasterio de las Concepcionistas de san José de Lima. El estudio directo y análisis formal de la obra nos lleva a las primeras décadas del seiscientos, particularmente al compararlo con el quehacer del sevillano Martín Alonso de Mesa y su documentado Crucificado de la catedral de Arica. De todo ello se desprende un paralelismo evidente que fundamenta la atribución a este escultor, sin duda el mejor del virreinato del Perú en aquellos años

    Between 1680 and 1750 the parishes were consolidated as the main spaces of dissemination of the Tridentine Catholic reform. The activity of the Indian brotherhoods was fundamental in this. This article shows some of the important contributions of these associations in parish life, such as the religious devotions they promoted, the liturgical celebrations they promoted in parish worship and their contribution to parish revenues.Entre 1680 y 1750 se consolidaron las parroquias como principales espacios de difusión de la reforma católica tridentina. En ello fue fundamental la actividad de las cofradías de indios. El presente artículo muestra algunas de las aportaciones importantes de estas asociaciones en la vida parroquial, tales como las devociones religiosas que impulsaron, las celebraciones litúrgicas que fomentaron en el culto parroquial así como su aportación a los ingresos parroquiales.Entre 1680 e 1750, as paróquias se consolidaram como os principais espaços de difusão da reforma católica tridentina.
