This paper examines the image of the “fairy” held by today’s Japanese people through analysis of questionnaire responses, and analysis of juvenile literature and young-adult fiction from the point of view of gender. Results are as follows.According to the data obtained from the questionnaire, many female Japanese university students typically picture a “fairy” as a tiny, cute girl in a romantic dress with wings, such as Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. This image corresponds to the “fairies” depicted in juvenile literature. In some works, the cute, romantic appearance of the fairies reflects the desire of the heroine, who is around ten years old, to overcome her inferiority complex; in other works, it reflects the female readers’ dreams for a happy, romantic marriage. On the other hand, young-adult fiction portrays the existence of various types of fairies from Western folklore, including male ones, but they also have a cute appearance; at the same time, it creates the original beautiful strong male fairy with wings. The cute appearance of fairies reflects the Japanese people’s tendency to regard “tiny things” and “good, old things” as “cute,” even if they are uncanny or fearful objects. With the admiration for the West added to this, the romantic beautiful fairies have become the ideal for Japanese girls

Komyoshugi, namely the worship of Buddha’s light, is a religious movement in Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhist tradition in modern Japan. Jodo Buddhism is the faith of Amitayus (also called Amitabha) Buddha and his holy land Jodo. It is believed that Amitayus has the wish to save everyone who calls his name, and has promised to make the devotees reborn into his holy land. Komyoshugi believers practice chanting and repeating the phrase “Namu Amida Butsu,” which expresses devotion to Amitayus Buddha. Sometimes they continue these practices for one week or more to attain the visualization of Amitayus Buddha.Komyoshugi originated with the Jodo sect priest Yamazaki Bennei. He practiced the reform and revival of Jodo Buddhism in modern Japan. The traditional doctrine claims the possibility of being reborn into Jodo by Buddha’s salvation. But Komyoshugi aims to transform the everyday attitude in modern life by the faith. Komyoshugi also accepted Christian theological terms and European philosophical concepts to explain its doctrine. They composed the hymns in European musical scales. These westernizations of religious expression benefitted the acceptance of people who live in a modern life style.

This paper mainly focuses on a grammatical problem in Rev. 1 : 1–3, and considers the form of the revelation which John has at the beginning of his letter. The problem is that ἀποστέλλω lacks the object noun(s), and this ellipsis makes obscure ‘who (or what) is to be sent?’ In most Japanese translations, including Shinkyoudouyaku (Japan Bible Society, 1987), takes adverbial phrase διά τοῡ ἀγγέλου αὐτοῡ (by his angel) as the object and paraphrases it such as ‘He sent his angel.’ Even if this paraphrase may not be impossible, it needs some explanation how the adverbial phrase can be replaced by the object noun(s) in this context. This research reveals that there might have been an influence of Hebrew (or Aramaic, John’s mother tongue), on the translation of שלח, into Koine Greek ἀποστέλλω. There are several examples, in the Hebrew Bible of שלח omiting the object, in which case, the focus seems to be on ‘the act of sending’ itself, rather than ‘the agent to be sent.’The crucial point is that when such ellipsis occurs, שלח also incorporates the subject of sent as. In Rev 22:6, ἀποστέλλω takes ἀγγέλοϛ as the object noun in accusative form to be translated as ‘sending an angel,’ because the context focuses on ‘the subject of sent.’ However, in the context of Rev 1 : 1–3, the focus is on ‘the agent to be sent,’ because John attempts to show how word of revelation is to be passed from God the Father to the Son, from the Son to his disciple, John the prophet ‘through the angel,’ from John to the seven churches of Asia, and from the churches to the world. On the one hand, John omits the object because the context makes clear what is to be sent, and on the other, he supplements the verb ἀποστέλλω with the adverbial phrase διά τοῡ ἀγγέλου αὐτου to make it clearer who the agent to give the word of revelation from Christ to John is. In conclusion, I would suggest the new translation, ‘Christ sent His word (of revelation) through his angel…’

Understanding the current status of the physical fitness and dietary intake of students is very important for improving their quality of life. This study examines the relationships between physical fitness and dietary intake, and body mass index (BMI) in students. The subjects were 398 female university students, who were divided into three groups according to BMI (Lean, <18.5; Normal, 18.5≦BMI<25; and obese, ≧25 kg/㎡). The results showed that the lean group had weaker grip strength than the obese group, and, for both instantaneous force and endurance, the obese group showed poorer performance than other groups. With regard to dietary intake, the highest protein intake (%E) was found in the obese group, who also consumed more animal protein and fat than the other groups. The conclusion of this paper is that appropriate interventions to modify physical activity and dietary behavior are needed in wellness education programs at universities in order to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of female university students.
