All elementary schools in Japan will officially start teaching English from April in 2020. Third and fourth grade pupils will participate in activities in English and fifth and sixth grade pupils will learn English as a subject. This research, therefore, aimed at investigating how English was currently taught at elementary schools. In order to accomplish this aim, a case study was conducted at a regular elementary school located within the Tokyo metropolitan area. The researcher made several visits to this school, and administered a questionnaire to 177 pupils and 25 teachers there. The results suggested that although many pupils enjoyed English lessons, especially ones with singing and dancing, 40 percent of the pupils thought English lessons were boring. The questionnaire for teachers revealed that they felt that teaching English was a burden, however, they were willing to take in-service training to become better English teachers
