Grammatical (structural) Syllabus has been using in many Korean text books as second foreign language at universities. However, there is also some criticism about it, especially in the fields of Japanese and English education or the study of second language acquisition. This paper searched why the grammatical syllabus is used even with this criticism. As a result, it turned out that the grammatical syllabus has many advantages in a classroom with a certain number of learners evaluated by written examination. While considering how to make use of the advantages and also how to improve the weak points, the study found a problem with a teaching method that depends on the grammatical syllabus and the evaluation method that emphasizes only ‘accuracy’. It is also necessary to manage the class so that learners can practice the Korean language in their own context. As a proposal from now on, we need to develop the tasks in which learners can use Korean language continuously on the criterion of the grammatical syllabus in a context of their own. Also I would like to propose setting questions to evaluate not only the accuracy but also the fluency on evaluation examinations.

Cultures of Shame in England and Japan (1500-1800): Comparisons and Case Studies

The project I brought to the Institute for the Comparative Studies of Culture at TokyoWoman’s Christian University in 2016 was the study of shame in comparative perspective, primarily through the medium of literature. My premise is that shame, so often associatedwith Japan, was also extremely important in early modern English culture. Afterpreliminary discussion of what is meant by“shame”and“guilt”, this article offers anoutline of Japanese and British history in the period 1500-1800 and a brief comparisonbetween the two societies. Against this background, a pair of case studies bearing ondifferent facets of honour and shame are considered. One is the famous Akō vendetta of1701-3, which became celebrated in kabuki and other forms of Japanese popular culture. The other is the less heroic tale of a scandalous liaison between Ford, Lord Grey and LadyHenrietta Berkeley in the 1680s, which was not merely a personal and family drama butlinked with major events in British high politics-the Exclusion Crisis (1679-81), the RyeHouse Plot (1683), and the rebellion of the duke of Monmouth (1685). This story likewisewas the subject of literary representation, principally a three-volume novel by AphraBehn, Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister (1684-7). Like other works by thisauthor, it provides a rich storehouse of references to shame and guilt that enable theirnuances to be explored in depth. Here only a brief preliminary analysis is possible

The purpose of this study is to clarify the differences between the idiomatic use of the word neck in Japanese and English. There are a lot of idiomatic expressions referring to the human neck in each language and neck idioms are often generalized beyond that of referring to the meaning of the specific body part in each language. However, the way these body parts are referred to differs between the languages. For example, to shake one’s head (meaning “no” in English) is different to kubi wo furu which literally means shake one’s neck in Japanese. This thesis investigates the above expressions from a cognitive linguistic point of view, focusing upon the use of metaphor and metonymy. Chapter 2 reviews previous studies of how cognitive linguistics has viewed the topic of body parts in its metaphor theory, and explains why the theory is of relevance to this study.Chapter 4 investigates the origin of the words in each language. As shown in Fang (2010), it is noted how the Japanese word kubi (首) took over the semantic extension to include the concept of head by the influence of the Chinese character for head (首). Chapter 5.1 illustrates the semantic extension of the word neck in idioms, and classifies its figurative meanings on a lexical level. Chapter 5.2 further investigates the neck expressions on an idiomatic level. In conclusion, from the analyses of Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, it was found that the Japanese word kubi has more meaning than that of the English word neck, because the concept kubi covers not only the neck area of the body but also the head

This article examines the Lexical Conceptual Structures (LCSs) of creation verbs in Japanese. Two possibilities have been proposed in previous studies for creation verbs: (1) [[x ACT ON y] CAUSE [y BECOME [y BE AT z]]], (2) [x CAUSE [BECOME y BE [AT z]]]. Here, [x ACT ON y] represents the initiating event, and [BECOME [y BE AT z]] represents the result. The first LCS indicates that the subject acts on the object in the initiating event, but the object of creation verbs does not exist before the initiating event. The second one cannot capture the meaning of such verbs as yaku ‘bake, burn, roast’ and amu ‘knit’, which can serve either as creation verbs or as change-of-state verbs. To overcome these difficulties, this article examines the truth values of sample sentences with those verbs against various situations, and proposes the LCS: [[x ACT] CAUSE [y BECOME z]]. It is shown that this LCS is appropriate for cases where those verbs are used as creation verbs and for cases where they are used as change-of-state verbs. It is also shown that the same LCS captures the meaning of the pure creation verb tsukuru ‘make, form, compose, manufacture’, which has no restriction on the manner of creation but requires that some action on the part of the agent brings about the existence of the object that has not existed before the action
