The Methodological Pluralism and the Multiple Intelligences in Teaching Electrical Circuits

    Get PDF
This essay investigated how the plurality of teaching methodologies proposed by Laburú e Carvalho (2001) can contribute to the development of different types of intelligence in high school students. A bibliographical review was done on the theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner and about the methodological pluralism with the goal of developing a democratic learning unit that would stimulate many types of intelligence and that would involve the biggest amount of students possible. The data was collected through the audio taping of classes, the observation of participants and a questionnaire done at the end of the unit. To do the analysis of the data, the Discursive Textual Analysis proposed by Moraes and Galiazzi (2007) was chosen. The intelligence spectrum was defined as a priori categories. It was observed that some methodologies stimulate a range of intelligences that was not initially expected. Besides that, practical activities in groups demonstrated to be the best way to stimulate multiple intelligences. At last, the manifestation of eight intelligences during the research were verified, a fact that was only possible due to the diverse methodologies used

A Learning Trajectory to the Understanding of the Curve Length Concept

    Get PDF
In this article, we present results of a research study focusing on the analysis of a hypothetical learning trajectory carried out with students taking a mathematics teaching degree. The aim of this study was to examine students’ understanding of the concept of curve length. The qualitative research was carried out with nine students participating in a course on Differential and Integral Calculus discipline of a private university in which that content was approached. The data were obtained through records of the students' worked out solutions, notes from observation recorded in the teacher's field diary and audio recordings made during the course development. From the analysis of the results, it can be inferred that the students showed gaps in their previous knowledge and difficulties on how to use that knowledge in the construction of new concepts; however, evidence was observed that the planned hypothetical learning trajectory facilitated, in part, the understanding of the concept of curve length

Differential Equations: Between the Theoretical Sublimation and the Practical Universalization

In this paper, we present, briefly, the bifront character of the ordinary differential equations (ODE): on the one hand the theoretical specialization in different areas and on the other, the multiplicity of applications of the same, as well as some reflections on the development of a course of ode in this context

School Inequalities and Urban Welfare: Going beyond Socioeconomic Status with Data Science

    Get PDF
The fast-changing Brazilian urban reality segregates people in socio-spatial terms and distributes urban public resources unfairly, threatening student’s access to the structure of educational opportunities and causing school inequalities. Factors such as the existence of public lighting, open sewage and garbage accumulated around the homes, as well as electricity and water supply, sanitation, and the number of residents per bathroom,  are discussed as predictors of school achievements as measured using their average IDEB (Basic Education Development Index) outcomes using Data Science methods. It was found that resident/bathroom density and the household wall material in a municipality have a higher correlation with its average school achievements than the average students’ socioeconomic status, relations that are clearly illustrated through bivariate choropleth maps across all the 5,388 Brazilian municipalities with available valid data. These results are compatible with research that reveals the presence of a “neighbourhood effect,” such that the distributional inequalities in infrastructure access and ultimately the notion of urban welfare reduces educational opportunities and engenders social inequalities, what is incompatible with the ideal of a sustainable society

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

The Dimensions of Making Sense: The Understanding of Exponential Functions from an Investigative Activity

    Get PDF
This research is part of the ongoing Master's dissertation entitled "From the Carbon Atom to the Great Populations: Teaching Exponential Functions under the perspective of Problem Solving" of the Post-Graduation Program in Teaching Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the Regional University of Blumenau (FURB), which sought to verify the contributions of the Teaching-Learning-Assessment Methodology through Problem Solving and the use of GeoGebra software for learning exponential functions. In this specific work, we seek to relate Problem Solving as a theme of the actual current of teaching Mathematics called Making Sense and to verify its implications for the learning of exponential functions. For this purpose, an activity was developed and applied involving Newton's Cooling / Heating Law with the purpose of relating the tabular, algebraic and graphical representations of the exponential functions, validating the results from an experimental practice based on the dimensions of the Making Sense. This activity was applied in a 1st year high school class and it was verified that this problem allowed to contextualize the program content, as well as to promote the learning of new concepts from a practice in which the student becomes the main agent of his learning and the teacher acts as a mediator in this process, encouraging and instigating when necessary. In the end, it was noticed that the students have understood the involved concepts without needing the direct intervention of the teacher
