Background:  Given the importance of studies the mathematics teaching self-efficacy and outcome expectancy of pre-service teachers, novice teachers (up to 10 years of experience) and experienced teachers (more than 10 years of experience), it is important to research the behaviour of the three groups proposed. Objectives: Compare the mathematics teaching self-efficacy and outcome expectancy of pre-service and in-service Primary Education teachers. Design: The Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI) is used to carry out the study. The MTEBI comprises two subscales: Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy (or teaching self-efficacy) (PMTE) and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (MTOE). Setting and Participants: The first group of participants consists of 419 pre-service teachers enrolled at the bachelor’s degree in Primary Education, the second group of participants consists of 69 novice teachers and the last group consists of 176 experienced teachers.  Data collection and analysis: Students of all the years of the bachelor’s degree were invited to answer the MTEBI. Therefore, the participation was optional and completely anonymous. Directors of Primary Education schools in the city were sent the link of the survey during the second trimester of 2018-19 academic year. They shared the link so that novice and experienced teachers were able to answer it confidentially.  Results: The comparison reveals that experienced teachers have the highest scores in PMTE subscale. The pre-service teachers, on the contrary, give the lowest scores in this subscale. In the MTOE subscale, the lowest values are obtained in the case of novice teachers. Additionally, the statistical analysis shows that there are significant differences between the three groups in both the PMTE and MTOE subscales. Conclusions: The findings of the current study provides information that would be useful for teacher educators to design or modify courses in order to enforce the mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs of pre-service and in-service Primary Education teachers

Clinicopathological approach of squamous cell carcinoma in lower lip: Case report

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Actinic Cheilitis and Lip Squamous Cells Carcinoma are pathologies that may be associated with chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays. Individuals who do not use sunscreen or caps and who carry occupations in which they have prolonged contact with the sun's rays are considered to be at high risk for the development of potentially malignant disorders or Lip Squamous Cells Carcinoma. The lower lip is an anatomical site that is easy to access for the examination and allows direct vision of the structures, which facilitates the identification of initial lesions, making possible the early diagnosis of oral pathological conditions. This article aims to report a clinical case of lower lip epidermoid carcinoma in a male patient, construction worker, leucoderma, 66 years old. Clinical and histopathological characteristics will be discussed, as well as the importance of education programs for the population regarding risk factors and prevention of these changes since it is a high incidence of Actinic Cheilitis and Lip Squamous Cells Carcinoma in the brazilian population.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Promote a positive attitude among teachers is a shared challenge for the teaching of statistics and probability today. In this context, we present the analysis of attitudes towards probability and its teaching in a sample of 126 prospective mathematics teachers from Chile and Spain. Following a quantitative methodology, results are organized in two parts, the first focused on the psychometric characteristics of the Scale and the second on specific attitudes of analysed sample. It is concluded that participants declare a positive attitude towards probability content and its teaching. Thus, Attitudes’ Scale towards Probability and its Teaching is reinforced as an instrument with good characteristics to explore attitudinal aspects in these professionals

This study has the purpose to describe the attitudes towards mathematics of 239 future elementary school teachers of a Chilean university, as well as the relation among such attitudes and gender, the math scores taken from the university selection test (PSU, according to its Spanish translation) and the intent to choose math as specialization. The present study used a quantitative approach and the data collection was conducted by using a Likert questionnaire, which was applied before starting the training courses. The results showed that a high percentage of participants declared to have a positive attitude towards mathematics, being the dimension “Utility of mathematics” the one with the higher percentage. Moreover, it could be observed that there is no relation between a negative attitude and the variables of gender, PSU and intent to choose math as specialization. The study suggests studying in depth the factors that affect the development of positive and negative attitudes towards mathematics as well as the course of actions that should be taken in order to strengthen them during the training program

Background: Finding the original graph when given the derivative graph is not a trivial task for students, even though they are able to find the derivative graph when given the original graph. Objective: In the context of qualitative research, this paper presents and analyses the mathematical reasoning that comes to light when the students seek the original graph from a derivative graph. Design: The research is assigned as a qualitative study, where the analyses of cases aim to extend understanding with respect to some phenomena or theory. Setting and participants: The study was conducted with 86 students of State University in East Java. We conducted clinical interviews and present data highlighting the reasoning participants used when solving tasks. Data collection and analysis: Task-based interviews were used to collect data and data analysis was used to analyse interpretations of the graphs that emerged as mathematical reasoning models. Results: From our data analysis, we found three mathematical reasoning was rooted in students’ conscious of problem situations on graphs we provided, consists of direct reasoning, reversible reasoning, and synthesis of direct-reversible reasoning. Conclusions: From here we suggest that there are different mathematical reasoning in constructed the original graph due to the mental activity in which students use the relation between a function and its derivative. The future project continued this inquiry with rigorous single-subject students’ experiments

Açúcar e saúde bucal: Uma revisão crítica da literatura

    Get PDF
