Challenges faced by Preservice Teachers in Planning and Exploring Tasks that Promote Mathematical Reasoning

    Get PDF
Background: Mathematical reasoning is fundamental for mathematics learning from the first years of schooling. It is a challenge for students and teachers, so it is relevant to deepen ways to develop this ability with the prospective teachers. Objectives: Identify the challenges in supervised practice with a view to developing students’ mathematical reasoning, seeking to answer the following question: What challenges do prospective teachers face in planning and exploring tasks that promote mathematical reasoning? Design: It is based on a formative experiment and follows an interpretive methodology. Setting and participants: This experiment was conducted during 13 sessions of the curricular unit (CU) Didactics of Mathematics of the 2nd year of the master’s course in Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, in a class of 25 students. The participants were four students - two pairs in teaching practice- whose selection followed the following criteria: not having any of the researchers as teaching practice supervisors and regularly intervening in class. Data collection and analysis: the data were collected through participant observation of the CU classes, interviews, and document collection. Results: Students face more challenges associated with mathematical reasoning during monitoring phases of the exploration of the tasks and their final discussion. Conclusions: These results point to the need for initial training programs to prioritise activities that support prospective teachers in the understanding of mathematical reasoning processes and that involve them in the planning of tasks and analysing practical exploration that will enhance their development

Indirect Distance Measurement and Geometric Work in the Construction of Trigonometric Notions

    Get PDF
Background: Among the multiple phenomena reported around the teaching and learning of trigonometry is the exclusive use as technical tools that trigonometric ratios receive. This use allows and promotes the construction of limited meanings and the dissociation of school trigonometry from geometric notions and procedures. Objective: Given this problem, we studied the germinal construction of trigonometric notions in a historical setting to identify meaningful uses of mathematical knowledge to enrich those that inhabit the school and its associated meanings. Design: We conducted this study from socio-epistemological theory and through a particular configuration of content analysis. Setting and participants: Being a documentary cut study, we did not have participants stricto sensu. Data collection and analysis: The historical study focused on the mathematical preliminaries of Ptolemy’s Almagest, a work that the literature points out as the oldest evidence of the birth of trigonometry. Results: Among the results, we highlight the indirect measurement of distances as the use that allowed the initial construction of trigonometric notions and the synergy of three uses of geometric knowledge - which we call geometric work - as fundamental to this process. Conclusions: We conclude by stressing the importance of creating concrete didactic situations that explore the operation of these results in teaching environments and the need for historical studies around other points in the construction of trigonometric notions

The Ethical Dimension of Creative and Collective Insubordination: A Philosophical incursion in Mathematics Education

    Get PDF
The present article seeks to develop theoretically the concept of creative insubordination as an ethical act, establishing the importance of the collective actions of the insubordination to the maintenance of their creations in defense of the oppressed and exploited. In this direction, we analyze three examples of creative and collective insubordinations seeking to show how they are characterized as ethical acts and the learning that we can get from them for our actions of insubordination. Thus, we analyze an experience of teachers who teach mathematics in a popular education project where these characteristics are present in collective planning, collective political action and resistance to social exclusion practices. Finally, we conclude that insubordination is only creative, and creations are insubordinate only if they are ethical acts: that is, collective

Where are the women in teacher training?: an overview from the Global South

    Get PDF
Where are the Global South women in teacher education contexts? To answer the proposed question, this article questions the epistemic foundation that legitimizes male power over public spaces and ranks society on the subject/object dichotomy, personifying the subject in the European cultural/economic/political pattern and the object in the pattern colonized/acculturated/subaltern. We draw an overview of feminist struggles and feminisms in Latin America and approach an epistemological tool, world traveling, and its relationship with the technique of cultural translation, in order to suggest the Latin American feminist contribution to propose the valorization of other forms of knowledge and teacher education processes

From paper to screen: Decisions taken to design a story app for intercultural dialogue

    Get PDF
We present a descriptive case study of the decision-making process during the development of a set of interactive story apps designed to promote intercultural dialogue directed to young children. We address: (i) the decisions made in the development of the story apps; and (ii) how the development process may contribute to informing new developments. Our results corroborate but also amplify the importance of core aspects in the development of story apps: (i) interdisciplinarity; (ii) multimodality; (iii) meaningful approach to interactivity; (iv) inclusion of complementary elements to the story. We argue that this study brings concreteness to theoretical claims, informing developments regarding the addressed dimensions

    Get PDF
