    Sobre hermetismo y confesión

Palomar by Italo Calvino is a work with a very original theme and structure. It deals with a confession whose author narrates only some «trivial» anecdotes. However it is a deep and «trascendent» confession. The Secret lies in the hermetic humor and in what goes beyond individualism.

The Ponencia Colectiva, written by Arturo Serrano Plaja in the name of the Spanish youth, was not only a reflection on the writer's place in society, but also a statement in the concrete historical context of the Spanish Civil War. It was presented in the II Congreso Internacional de Escritores para la Defensa de la Cultura, which was inspired and directed by organisms and fellow travellers of the Communist Party. Those who signed the Ponencia Colectiva demanded an art centred in mankind, far away from the pure art and the propaganda art. They put at the disposal of the republican government, supported by the U.S.S.R., both their intellectual work and their effort as young men in the fight, rejecting the anarchic revolutionarism. They also declared their intellectual and political autonomy. This aspiration joined them to the project of the journal Hora de España, to which most of them were regular contributors.

    Get PDF
Saavedra was not Cervantes's last name, nor one that his direct ancestors bore. The writer assumed this surname after his return from Barbary, where he was a captive from 1575 to 1580. This surname acquires an extraordinary significance in the light of the Cervantine literary production, because Saavedra is also the name granted by Cervantes to the protagonists of his dramas El trato de Argel and El gallardo español, and to a character in La historia del cautivo, interpolated in Don Quijote Part I. This essay examines the adoption of the patronymic Saavedra by Miguel de Cervantes from interdisciplinary perspectives, such as literary history, psychoanalytic theory, and a study of the frontiers between autobiography and fiction in the Spanish author. Saavedra represents a testimony of the limit experience of captivity and, simultaneously, a response to this experience emerging from artistic creation.

    Get PDF
The representation of the marine space in Hispanic fin-de-siècle allows us to establish some comments to carry out a new reading of the difficult concept of modernity. The present article studies two visions of the marine space as modernity. On the one hand, the paintings by the Spaniard Joaquin Sorolla present the marine space as a locus amoenus, and as a place for enjoyment where art becomes an economic object. On the other hand, the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío intented to create an art opposed to materialism, and he gave us a vision of the ocean linked to a metaphysical meditation of existential tones. Darío was familiar with Joaquin Sorolla's paintings and he even wrote short essays on them. This particular aspect allows us to prove in a clearer way the differences in their visions about modernity and art.

This study essentially consists on the explanation of the relationship between Cernuda's and Reverdy's poetics. In first place, a historiographical method is employed to discover the cirscunstances this contact happened. Among these ones, may be emphasized the advices given by P. Salinas as, in a special way, master of the called «generación del 27». Afterwards, relations between both authors poetical minds are stablished next to the textual pieces that reveal a stressed imitative dependence. In this way, are exposed the analytical finds by D. Harris and T. McMullan, and other connections are joined after the comparisons we make with the Reverdyan novel Le Voleur de Talan.

The objective of this study is to analize the French plays staged by French troupes in Madrid between 1851 and 1861 and the repercussion it had on the Spanish theater of that time. During these nine seasons theater-lovers had the opportunity to see nearly 400 French works in their original version, the titles of which are to be found in an appendix to this study. The works can be catalogued in a variety of subgenres —comedies, dramas, operas, operettas, etc.—, but Madrid theater-goers preferred vaudeville.

A strict revision of Javier Marías's narrative must start from the analysis of the narrator's voice, the main narrative component in a novel. El hombre sentimental's publication in 1986 is going to indicate the beginning of a fruitful creative stage of this writer based on the first person narrative voice use. The protagonist narrator tells us a piece of his past that needs to be related in order to be understood. The result is a never linear narration that prospers thanks to the narrator's continuous digressive asides. Javier Marías went on with the same use of the narrator's voice in his following fictions Todas las almas (1989), Corazón tan blanco (1992) and Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí (1994). In his last work Negra espalda del tiempo (1998) a narrator called Javier Marias is the main character of a sort of novel placed between fiction and reality. Again a mysterious voice is the only protagonist of a spiral narration of which main purpose is its own narrative act.

    Get PDF
The comedy of characters was born in the hands of Ruiz de Alarcón as he achieved that from his first comedies, those of enredo, the main characters learnt to govern their own actions without any classification. That is the reason why the critics, without any further analysis, have described his theatre as 'moral'. Nevertheless, we are talking about a dramatist who stages mirages, unmasks tyrants disguised as level-headed monarchs, and frustrates the development of those court favourites who were egoists and ill by their passions. At the same time, the omission of providence becomes another kind of protest. All the court on the stage to ridicule with irony and punish their bad habits and delusions. When he finally discovered the politics of the conde-duque de Olivares, he decided to give up theatre. Therefore, we discover another Juan Ruiz de Alarcón never suspected: the dramatist who believed in the program of reformation that the conde-duque de Olivares, court favourite of King Philip IV, wanted to impose to a «patria doliente», name given by the dramatist to the Spain of the first half of the 17th century.
