This paper deals with the description of what Fernando de Herrera calls «estilo afetuoso» (emotive style) in his Anotaciones on Garcilaso's poetry. In the first place, I review the theory of «emotions» through the Classical Rhetoric, focusing specially on the Hermogenean tradition, which is Herrera's main source. The identification of the «estilo afetuoso» as the strongest force in the oratory, in so far as it is viewed as movere, leaves Herrera unable to define this style, as he does with the rest of the styles. This style then is the ideal of the lyrical poetry and that is the reason why it escapes definitions and remains as a valuative term.
(Salamanca, Semyr, 2001)
Printing in Baeza, as technological point and its bibliographic production (1550-1599), catalogued, described and interpreted by Pedro M. Cátedra establish an outstanding point of view over the spiritual and intellectual context determined by the Counter-reformation. In this special laboratory of XVIth century spiritual life it become to a complementary analysis of pedagogical institutions (the University of Baeza, of course), and the world of printing, in its local specifically, and its national and international connection and position through the reflection about the catalogue and the material circumstances of biacense printing. The differences and affinities of the spiritual programmes and lecture represented by Juan de Ávila are outlined, also the evolution of printing in Baeza, and the conformation of a new poetic of spiritual references to a diverse and changing variety of public and the tension that new texts hold out between demand and spiritual control, orthodoxy and heterodoxy, opening and closure.
This article has attempts et explain the reason behind the renunciation of the novel by Juan Ramón Jiménez, apart from possessing a notable capacity for invention and deeply involved in this period in expressing his innovative ideas, Juan Ramón came uo against an impossible obstacle in his plans to develop and express his ideas trough the novel. His aim was to write novels in his capacity as a poet. As a result he wished to create novels as prolongation of his poems. The poet realised the futility of his undertaking when he saw that his major aesthetic norms did not coincide with the genre of the novel, not even in the «novela lírica» and Platero y yo which remain his closest prose expression to poetry.
The concept of literary «hypertextuality», which was coined by Gerard Genette in Palimpsestes, has characterized an important area of the post-estructuralistic paradigm. On the other hand, the theory of «imitation» represents the basis of the Renaissance poetics. In this article the relations between both concepts are tried to be highlighted. At the same time, their validity for interpreting the classical texts is tested. As an example, the Garcilaso's sonnet VIII has been chosen. Through a brief description of the commentaries about a famous lyrical motive —that of the «espíritus vivos y encendidos»-, the understanding of the sonnet is seen to be enriched not only with the catalogue of its sources and linguistic exchanges but also with the discovery of the metric and generic links between a hypertext and its (possible) hypotexts. After discussing Garcilaso's thematic sources, it is possible for his poem to be located in a tradition which goes back, beyond the Dante's Canzone «Donna ch'avete», to the Sicilian sonnets in the thirteenth century. The study of the prepetrarchist sources might help to improve our understanding of the Spanish Renaissance Literature from a transtextual and hermeneutic point of view.
Enrique Gómez Carrillo at the age of seventeen published in the Guatemalan newspaper El Imparcial in February 1890 a two-part article entitled «El último folleto de Clarín.» It is a review of the sixth of Leopoldo Alas's Folletos literarios, Rafael Calvo y el teatro español, in which the freshly minted critic defends Clarín in the most laudatory terms against the attacks of the Salvadorean writer Francisco Gavidia, a close friend of Rubén Darío, both of whom Clarín's apparently anti-American stance had offended deeply. With this forgotten article Gómez Carrillo unleashed a lively polemic, both for his impassioned praise of Clarín as a critic and as a fiction writer and for his acerbic, burlesque tone. In this respect, he echoed Clarín himself, who by this time had become one of the most widely read and hotly debated peninsular writers in Spanish America. Critics have documented the literary relations between Clarín and Gómez Carrillo after the latter's arrival in Madrid and after Clarín reviewed Gómez Carrillo's first book in 1892, but this obscure article, which is reprinted here, pushes the contact back two years and is a demonstration of the sincere and disinterested admiration that Gómez Carrillo felt for Clarín at a time when he owed him no debts.
During the years of the Peninsular War, the simple crossed questions of the religious catechisms, is progressively loaded with a political sense, being a efficient way of transmission for the principles of the brand-new bourgeois social system, in which the concern about the education of the subject, in order to make him/her a citizen, will be the main characteristic. However, it will be possible notice fairly important differences within the pamphlets of this time, depending on the place and time of its publication. In the particular case of Cadiz, it will be possible to divide catechisms in three periods: «fight», «theoretical-pedagogical speculation» and «constitutional indoctrination». On the other hand, the phenomenon of the adaptation of the catechism to political events will be found in others formulas with a religious tradition (fervent speeches. Creeds, etc.), in which sometimes, just like in the first instance, the resort to the satire as a mechanism of denunce will also be present.
This work deals with the different ways of confronting Don Pedro's character after Romanticism, which reveal the contradictions and common presuppositions that Literature and History still shared. The monarch «Cruel» became, in a series of narratives, the catalyst for the writers' passions, and the analysis of the various tales created around his figure shows the mutual influence between literary fiction and historical studies at that time. In the end, no universal agreement was reached in the long intertextual dialogue, but the very necessity of this narrative invites us to reflect on all the aspirations and limitations betrayed in the 19th Century thought in these stories.
