The present article delves into the purge file on the Professor and literaty historian Ángel Valbuena Prat. In 1943, Valbuena was forcefully removed from his teaching post at the Faculty of Arts in Barcelona and sent to that in Murcia. This administrative measure was mainly motivated by certain aspects of his Historia de la literatura española (A History of Spanish Literature; Barcelona, 1937). The analysis carried out in what follows throws light on how the repression enforced by Franco’s dictatorship affected the university life of the period, while simultaneously providing information on the reception and history of one of our most prestigious works of literary historiography in the 20th century.

This paper examines the works titled Silva by Juan Lorenzo Palmireno. The analysis of these texts sheds light on Palmireno’s understanding of the word and its possible implications in the sixteenth century. The study identifies an interpretation of silva as a way of writing different from his predecessor, Pedro Mexía, who first used it to title his work Silva de varia lección twenty years ago. The lack of any intention to arrange its structure gives these silvas the characteristic of a literary draft, a feature derived from one of the meanings of silva inherited from the Classical Age. Moreover, Palmireno’s works reveal an encyclopedic project of which the miscellany (represented by silva) forms a part. Furthermore, the silvas of Palmireno act as a transition to the later development of silva as a genre, which finds its educational objective being taken over gradually by the anxiety to provide entertainment.

    Get PDF
Poet of solitude in the nidst of war, Hernando de Acuña belongs to the first generation of neoclassical emulators of that «certain rule» that characterized the work of the Spanish classic Garcilaso de la Vega. Acuña’s locution is marked by that happy marriage of the plainness of popular language and the simplicity of polished classicism that is the hallmark of fifteenth-century Spanish literature. Most notable in Acuña’s individual style is a fruitful interplay between plainness and the feeling of the sublime; the poet reflects on his style in his poems. Acuña conceives the whole of his poetic work as the history of his soul. Through the content of the latter the extraordinary sympathy of the poet soldier is revealed, and through the structure of his history one discovers his unsuspected talent as a narrator. The order that he gave his poems is instrumental for their narrative vein.

This paper supports the fact that Manuel Machado’s knowledge of the filmic adaptation of Lubitsch as well as the theatrical version of The man that I killed by Maurice Rostand (which was also reviewed by him) might be one of the most important stimuli to write The man who died in the war. On the other hand, a «Chronicle from Paris», which was written by Manuel Machado in the French trench during the First World War and published in 1919, appears as an intertext in the first play of The man who died in the war. These facts, which were unknown until present, point out that the paternity of The man who died in the war does not exclusively belongs to Antonio Machado, but also to Manuel, who probably impulses the work from the beginning playing a crucial role in its elaboration.

Along its critical interpretations, El burlador de Sevilla has given ground to a series of disquisitions that have to do with the concept of «effective» and «sufficient grace» for a sinner to be forgiven. The present article widens the links between the drama and theological writings of its time, especially confessional and matrimonial casuistry, in order to approach a new theory of the donjuanesque soul, which puts it in a context of insurmountable irremissionA lo largo de su interpretación crítica El burlador de Sevilla ha dado lugar a una serie de disquisiciones concernientes a la «gracia efectiva» y «gracia suficiente» para la salvación del pecador.

The article summarizes my research on the royal preacher Jerónimo de Florencia, who, along with Paravicino, was the most renowned preacher during the reign of Philip III and part of that of Philip IV. This study provides information on his work, comprised fundamentally of his important funereal prayers, and the impact that it had on his epoch. The second part of the study analyzes his biography, influenced by his close ties to power, especially by his relationship with Philip III, whom he served as confident, and who has been attributed a very direct participation in crafting the clauses of the king’s last will and testament. Florencia’s privileged situation continued with the new king, Philip IV, as revealed by his being named confessor of the princes don Carlos and don Fernando, and by his inclusion as a member of the famous Reformation Council, among other honors.

    Get PDF
This article offers a reading of the poetical texts of Aníbal Núñez (Salamanca, 1944-1987) focused on the study of two of its most important images, the ruin and the crystal. In the ruin motif many different literary traditions (Baroque, Romantic, Postmodernist) coincide, establishing a dialog with the corpus of the twentieth century. On the other hand, crystals as a heuristic model refer to Gilles Deleuze’s esthetics. Firstly, the analysis will provide the bases of a «syntax of the imaginary» in Nuñez’s poetry, accounting for the logic that rules the relations among images gathered around both nuclear metaphors (Burgos 1982). Secondly, it will trace the «anthropologic journey» of ruins and crystals as dynamic images that arise from the poem and reach subjective and social imaginaries (Durand 1960, 1993). In conclusion, some guidelines will be proposed in order to define the poetics of time inscribed in the Spanish author’s texts.
