    Get PDF
This paper analyses tragedy at the end of the 16th century, within the framework of Spanish plays, and specially the Tragedia de los siete Infantes de Lara by Juan de la Cueva. The historic legend, recounted in chronicles and ballads, is taken up in this play just at the end: the initial part is only taken in the accounts of some of the characters. The structure of the tragedy is rather original: Juan de la Cueva goes through successive «pictures» which refer to the most dramatically evocative episodes. Noteworthy is the poet’s interest in the value of words and his search for a formal and learned style, not lacking occasionally of some rhetorical abuses. This paper highlights the characteristics of Cueva’s humanistic style as well as the contradictory points of view in the critical history of this work, which probably raised admiratio but also raised the moral of the audience, as was actually the poet’s intention.

    Get PDF
José Jiménez Lozano is a unique writer in the Hispanic literary scene of these last decades. His work is vast and diverse, and this initial observation does not escape his narrative, which genre the write demonstrates more prolifically. Despite the apparent diversity, there is outstanding unity underlying Jiménez Lozano´s entire work. This unity lies not only on the constant return to the same matters, but also on the approaches or the reasons, from which his literary work begins. The writer reflects over his work and lets his ideas expand through the diverse manifestations of his ideas on prose. It is a talk about the rhetorical writing of this article, valuing the coherent existence between reflection and literary practice.

This article offers an analysis and interpretation of the best Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda’s drama, Baltasar, written in 1858, based on the biblical episode of the Dinner of King Baltasar and the fall of the neo-babylonian empire. Author’s purpose —aforesaid in the piece’s preface— was to demonstrate how God’s Providence governs man’s destiny and his empires. The greatest attraction and novelty of this piece lies in showing Baltasar as a man ruined by Spleen —the nineteenth century’s literary disease—, confronting his lack of religious faith to the faith of two Jewish young people, Elda and Rubén, and two historical characters, King Joaquin and prophet Daniel. This drama would follow the wake of Don Juan Tenorio, and would contribute to a theatrical subgenre of religious conservative romanticism.

Putting forward the date of Zola’s Hispanic impact, this article provides comments about Thérèse Raquin by the Diario de Reus’ correspondent in Paris (very likely, Angel Vallejo Miranda) and a mention as an editor of La Tribune by Josep Coroleu in El Principado, of Barcelona. While one, coinciding with Louis Ulbach, censures the depraved and medical character of various novels (such as also La Comtesse de Châlis, by Ernest-Aimé Feydeau), the other defends the realism of this work and, quoting Claude Bernard, the experimental method. Although Zola’s naturalism had yet to develop, these texts manifest two opposing attitudes, which acquire a wide range of hues.

This paper aims to provide a new overall reading of El árbol de la ciencia by means of a detailed analysis of its rich hypertextual dialogue with the book of Genesis. All through his novel Baroja manages to spread a set of clues or intertextual indications that let the attentive reader reconstruct the allegorical meaning of his work, beyond its merely autobiographical, philosophical or sociohistorical aspects, which have been largely the main topic of many papers and studies before. This new look at the polyphonic interplay between interwoven literary discourses (regarding western exegetical tradition, Jewish esotericism or medieval commonplaces) and the biblical text of Genesis provides us a more extensive and nuanced point of view about the meaning(s) of the novel, always open to the most surprising games of allusive reutterance and critical review of its inherited material.

    Get PDF
In 1913, feeling the European uneasy spirits due to the threatening closeness of the Great War’s outbreak, the first collection/poem book of José Moreno Villa (poet and painter who stands in between Modernism and Avant-gardes at the beginning of the XX century of the Spanish literature) appears published with the title of Garba. This work has been considered to be a modernist book of youth, inside a Modernism «a la andaluza,» conceiving Modernism as a syncretic «movement», hybrid from different trends, from Parnasianism to Symbolism, suffering from the decadentism of the fin de siècle’s fits. In a general sense, however, Garba can be seen as a work of its times in its European context, a work proper to a historical and social moment of crisis in the traditional values and changes in time perceptions. Without forgetting about its Spanish context, this short analysis has the aim of highlighting the unity of the work as a whole, a unity which is based on a cyclical structure close to the time perception of Nature —against mechanized time—, trying to break free from that alienated feeling which the industrialization of the beginning of the century conveys. Therefore, Garba may be seen as a work which reflects all the concerns about time perception which other contemporary authors were suffering far beyond the Spanish frontiers.

The dialogical relation that the Spanish Vanguard settled with tradition —a usual phenomenon also in Latinamerica— has given place to parceled interpretations of the art and literature of the early XXth century, and, specially, of the poetry of the so-called «Generación del 27». During the last two decades, critical approaches has shown that the alliance between the past and «the new» is far from being an obstacle that condemns the Spanish «ismos» to be seen as inauthentic ones, and therefore to be accused of not having the transformative impulse that characterized the artistic projects of the early modernized European countries. Based on the recent works that have reviewed these premises (Soria, Olmedo, Geist, Bosi, García Montero, Wilson...), the purpose of this article is to analyze the well known (and many times cited) Rafael Alberti’s poem «Madrigal al billete de tranvía», with the aim to explore, in a creative text, the manifestations of a vanguardist aesthetic that re-elaborated the lyric models inherited from the tradition. In addition to this, this article aims to show that, below the hermeticism of the «neo-Gongorian» madrigal discourse, lies the brief manifesto of a poetics whose decipherment enriches the interpretations of Alberti’s works during the 20s.El diálogo que la vanguardia española entabló con la tradición —fenómeno común también a Latinoamérica— ha dado lugar a interpretaciones parceladas del arte y de la literatura del temprano siglo XX, y muy especialmente, de la poesía de la llamada Generación del 27.

The «auto sacramental», the Narcissu’s myth and its projecting both in the christian’s typification and in the vision of spanish Baroque’s theologie and rhetoric, those are the matters proposed in this paper on sor Juana’s sacred play, the «Divino Narciso». We analyse here the subject matter’s prospect in the «Divino Narciso’s «Loa», the desing and the purposes of the author, the characters, the manner of linguistic expression had been organised. We suggest that the «Loa» propose toi the audience the unity of God and gods, the unity of every men, and a new wholeness humanity exalting the Cropus Christi as a total unity sing, for the meeting between America, Europe and Spain has created it.

This study of certain negative models of sainetes [afterpieces] from the 18th century reveals not only a continuity of comic stereotypes, but also their relationship to the ideals of behaviour of the era: the authority of the husband, the submissiveness of the wife, thriftiness in managing household finances, etc. Afterpieces join other literary genres (journalism, satirical poetry and the moral essay) in ridiculing those who are involved in the practice of cortejo and who readily adopt new forms of social behavior, fashions, foreign dances, etc., in contrast to traditional ways and tastes. Examples taken from Antonio de Zamora, Agramont, Ramón de la Cruz, Vázquez and González del Castillo are used to illustrate this reticence towards changes in mentality of a new culture of leisure, as well as to observe it a contrario: its “feminization”, its frivolity, and its uselessness.

Tres momentos: Ortega, Bergamín y Mariano Baquero Goyanes

    Get PDF
Spanish theory of the novel is, in the opinión of the author, the most important contribution to the literary theory made from Spain during the 20th century. This contribution follows a continuity whose fundamental links are Ortega, Bergamín y Mariano Baquero Goyanes. Ortega´s theory of the novel is the most known of the three, although it recognition is superior in USA than in Spain. The contributions by Bergamín and Baquero Goyanes have not gone beyond, so far, the nacional limits and, even in Spain, they are not very well known.
