The Pedagogical Significance of the Concept of “Home” with a Public Characteristics

    Get PDF
This paper examined the educational significance of the concept of “home” by focusing on its public nature in the context of education. The English word “home” is generally translated as “kazoku” in Japanese, a term strongly associated with the biological kinship. On the other hand, “home” in Japanese katakana, such as “home team”, “hometown”, or “home ground”, also refers to a place or space that serves as a foundation or base of action for an individual and their relationships, that are not limited to blood relations. In schools, the classrooms and classes to which students belong, as well as class-based meetings, are called “homerooms”. When “home” is considered as a concept that encompasses the place, space, functions, and human relationships in which people can develop, I can find pedagogical significance that has been overlooked in the framework of modern society and modern education. In order to achieve the above objectives, first, the contemporary discussions on “home” and “parents” and previous studies on the concept of “home” in education were reviewed, and the historical background and characteristics of this concept were outlined. Next, for studies that reconsidered the concept of “home” and education in the “family”, the paper focused on (1) home education in the Edo period in Japan and (2) J.R. Martin’s suggestion of the “Schoolhome”. Both of these studies shared a critical perspective on the duality of the “home-school” and “public-private” sphere in both Japan and the U.S., and examined the educational function of “home”, especially in relation to the public nature of the “home. Third, to clarify the characteristics of “education” based on the public nature of “home”, the paper focused on (1) learning in the “apprenticeship system”, and (2) the concept of “life” in education, and examined the pedagogical suggestions that could be derived from these concepts. Finally, the paper conclude by discussing the challenges and possibilities in presenting the pedagogical significance of the concept of “home”, which includes a public nature.departmental bulletin pape

Using Key Visuals and Translanguaging to Scaffold Content Instruction for Japanese University Students

    Get PDF
The recent trend toward content-based, English-Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education EFL courses at Japanese universities has brought significant challenges for teachers and students. Although a focus on content through the medium of English offers many benefits, including more exposure to the target language and opportunities to use it for communicative purposes, it can also be difficult for students to understand content that is written and presented in English. Moreover, it can be challenging for teachers to integrate language development with content teaching. This paper presents a pedagogical action plan to address these issues through the use of key visuals and translanguaging. By surveying the literature in these areas and detailing a series of concrete pedagogical practices, it is hoped that this paper contributes to a larger discussion among university instructors about how to deal with this important challenge. departmental bulletin pape

"Iceland and European Integration" : The trajectory of a small country that has hesitated to join the EU

    Get PDF
Iceland has kept its distance from European integration. The conservative Independence Party and Progressive Party, which have been in power for many years, have consistently opposed EU membership, citing the need to maintain national sovereignty and protect the traditional industries of fishing and agriculture. However, facing a financial crisis in 2008, a left-wing coalition government in favor of EU membership submitted an application to the EU in 2009. However, when the conservative coalition government came to power again in the 2013 general election, it unilaterally suspended accession negotiations, and the application has been frozen since then. Iceland joined the EEA (European Economic Area) in 1994, securing access to the EU's single market, and is trying to maintain its own economic interests by skillfully using the institutional framework.departmental bulletin pape

Implications of “Place-Based Pedagogy” in Early Education Practice Theory : From the case study of Pakuranga Baptist Kindergarten in New Zealand/Aotearoa

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to examine in what context “Place-Based Pedagogy” is discussed in pedagogical research, and how it is specifically linked to childcare practice. The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not the childcare system is being implemented through the case study of childcare in New Zealand. After an overview of global educational research trends, we will confirm the role that “Place-Based Pedagogy” is trying to play in addressing the pedagogical issues we face, and further discuss how it can be applied to childcare. We will consider what kind of knowledge we can provide to practical theory research (Chapter 1). Based on this, we analyze childcare records (Learning Stories) and childcare practices at a kindergarten in Auckland, New Zealand, and examine the relationship between “Place-Based Pedagogy” and specific childcare practices (Chapter 2).departmental bulletin pape

Psychological trauma and how to heal it: A general overview of PTSD research

    Get PDF
This paper is an overview of trauma and PTSD. The first half describes the definitions of trauma and PTSD, the history of research, brain science, and related mental disorders. In the second half, trauma-focused and non-trauma-focused therapeutic interventions for PTSD are outlined. Finally, an assessment tool for PTSD is introduced. This paper summarizes the latest views on PTSD in light of the revision of medical treatment fees, which states that "in order to promote appropriate intervention for patients with symptoms resulting from trauma, new evaluations will be made when licensed psychologists under the direction of a psychiatric physician provide necessary support."departmental bulletin pape
