League of Blood, Millenarians and Christian Liberals
Get PDFChristian liberals in Japan and the Christian groups that they belong to have been strongly critical of Modern Japan since the end of World War E . National Christian Council in Japan (NCC) is one of such groups which have condemned Modern Japan and her alleged military policies before and during World War 11 . To them, attacks like League of Blood Incidents and the May 15 Incident, therefore, must be the core of the so-called Japanese militarism in the 1930s and 40s which they believe led Japan to the war against the UK and the USA inevitably. However, the main antagonists of such incidents and the NCC members in fact share strikingly similar beliefs with some superficial differences between them.
Even in the 21st century, when new historical materials are available for ordinary citizens to examine, Christian liberals in Japan do not seem to have changed their historical view of Modern Japan. It seems as if the strong criticism against her has become a part of their Church lives and Christian beliefs. If they come across such new materials and encounter historical facts that they have never met, however, they should realize that the people they have been critical of are actually their own shadows in a mirror.
This irony, which Christian liberals have not yet recognized, must be due to the fact that they have been strayed from the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the essential document of their Church. They have replaced and / or blended the Gospel with their historical interpretation, which, ironically, has blinded their scientific sharp eyes in their study of history. Being a genre of social science, history must be well taken care of by scientific minds. As for the Japanese Christian liberals, they should go back to the basics of the Christian Church: the salvation through Jesus Christ, leaving the historical studies in the field of science.departmental bulletin pape
