    Get PDF
This paper presents an analysis of the structure of the Messianic time that Benjamin tries to think from the point of view of its inextricable connection to the concepts of happiness and redemption. The conceptual route goes from the early writings, in which the constellation happiness-redemption acquires a definite physiognomy —combining with an elegant and specific critique of modernity— to the thesis Über den Begriff der Geschichte, in which this constellation is intertwined with the figure of Eingedenken, which determines an important conceptual shift in the theoretical horizon of the author, also representing the specificity and richness of his reflections on time and history.

    Get PDF
In Politics VI 2, 1317b 1-17, Aristotle defines «democracy» as follows: «the aim of democracy is, ideally, freedom from any interference of government, and, failing that, such freedom as comes from alternation of ruling and being ruled. It contributes, in this way, to a general system of liberty based on equality». Historically, this normative model shaped two possible political regimes, v. gr., popular or extreme democracy, based on direct participation of all citizens, as in Athens, and a «mixed constitution» containing oligarchic as well as democratic features, called «republican» in the roman tradition since Cicero. Modern democracy was the heir of both these Ancient regimes, tempered by the new conception of individual rights belonging to Modern thought from Hugo Grotius to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The representative constitution was, thus, the modern solution to the conflict between government of the majority and government of the laws. Since their Independence in the 19th century, Latin American democracies suffer from the unresolved tension between populism and the liberal constitutional regime. The neo-populism that grew in the last years of 20th century appears as a response and defiance to democracy’s unfulfilled promises. Against defenders of authoritarian populism, such as Ch. Mouffe and E. Laclau, I argue that deliberative democracy is a better response to them.

The article presents a systematic and historically evolution of the concept of «sexual difference» in Emmanuel Levinas’ thought, indicating their turns and twists. It questions the status of this concept in relation to Levinasian concept of otherness, feminine alterity and ontological difference. It comments the critical receptions and readings about this subject in several feminist lines.

XX Conferencias Aranguren

Justice is considered as a reply to injustice. This is a novel idea because both ancient and modern theories understand justice as an apriori to injustice. Placing injustice first requires recourse to memory. Without the memory of injustice there can be no theory of justice. The result is an anamnestic justice which is presented as an alternative to the standard but amnesic theories of justice.

    Get PDF
Contemporary sociology and social theory are deeply penetrated by the idea that sociology is by its own nature a «multi-paradigm » science or discipline, and that it is not possible nor desirable to advance towards a higher degree of integration. This article argues against that belief, and defends the possibility and desirability of establishing a set of shared «rules of the game», as a logical and institutional condition in order to produce sociological knowledge in a fruitful and critical way. To that aim, some useful analytical distinctions are made: first, between genuine theoretical pluralism and pseudo-pluralism; second, between lexical, semantical, methodological, epistemic, and theoretical integration; and third, between «simple» and «complex» integration (or «consilience»). Additionally, the article presents some hypothesis to explain the popularity of this myth among sociologist; it is stressed that the myth may be used as a shield against criticism.

Compared to Descartes, who attempted to make the thinking subject the centre and strengthen its power, Pascal was confronted with the contingency, chance and opacity of human existence. He tried to «decentralise» the subject and delve further into its deepest dissonance. He classified three unmeasurable orders of reality: body, spirit and charity. On a moral level, for Pascal the «ordo amoris» represents the absolute viewpoint to which all relative points of view are ordered. Only through a release from the desire of domination can the human being discover true justice and goodness.

The notion of global justice and the theory of justice attached to it are new in the current moral and political philosophy. However, this paper aims to show that the present debate on global justice is partially based upon problems and concepts that had previously been an issue of reflection and controversy in the history of the philosophical and juridical thinking. In particular, it tries to be a reflection on the following three ideas: first, on a universal human community conceived of as a framework that coexists with the fact of being a member of particular political societies; second, on the distinctions between perfect and imperfect rights and duties, as well as between requirements of justice and beneficence; and finally, on justification, conditions, and limits for communication, trade and property among members of different political societies.
