This paper analyzes certain controversies that biopolitical interpretations of Hannah Arendt’s thought may arise. Recently, several scholars have emphasized that new theoretical clues are made possible through a link between some Arendtian key-concepts («Natality», «Freedom», «Power», «Life») and the biopolitical paradigm. Nevertheless, their studies do not consider enough the original Arendtian background: Phenomenology. Then, it could cause her thought can be misleading. The following steps are required to prove this point: a) to evaluate the viability of the biopolitical interpretations of Arendt’s thought; b) to determine their scope; c) to show their risk of producing a misrepresentation of her thought. If this risk can be shown, then the explanating power of the biopolitical paradigm could be considerably relativized.
From Hobbes to the new neuroscience there is a continuity which tends to naturalize politics by their reducing it to the governance of human nature, converting it to biopolitics. In this context, violence becomes an unavoidable natural instinct that must be managed politically. Countering the naturalism of violence, and following some critical clues opened by Hannah Arendt, we can distinguish between aggressiveness and violence. Aggressiveness is natural but violence is intentional (symbolic). It exists as an ethical negation of otherness and not as decisive impulse of nature. Thus memory transcends mere natural functionality to be instituted as a neutralizing power of violence.
In this present work, I state, as a philosophical hypothesis of work, that moral pluralism could be a better option when it is confronted with monism (although it could be recognized that the arguments of both sides are not conclusive). From the point of view of this hypothesis, I attempt to characterize the main conceptual features of a «reasonable» pluralism In addition, I maintain that the possible implications of these features can imply some unacceptable consequences for the reasonable pluralist; in particular, some kind of moral particularism, some kind of moral relativism and some kind of fragmentation of values. In this last case the other consequence could be a so called «moral disintegration». My point is that these consequences depend on some sort of «conceptual pressure» exerted by different strategies designed by philosophers in their analysis of the concept of a reasonable pluralism.
This article explores the relationship between memory and history, using the events of Auschwitz as central point around which the problems this relationship poses are focused in a singular way, and which also demand and enable a radical response.
In May 2003 the twelfth edition of the «Aranguren Conferences» was held. Jorge Semprún gave three keynote speeches titled «Kant and the Maquis’ rucksack», «The radical evil and the Buchenwald latrines» and «Literature and memory of the evil: from Sartre to Paul Ricoeur», all of them grouped under the generic denomination Memory of Evil. The thread running through the three speeches was Semprún’s experience as a political deportee at Buchenwald concentration camp, so close to the Weimar camp of Schiller and Goethe. There, he could experience the radical evil, but also the brotherhood through the antifascist resistance groups who coordinated the various clandestine political groups at the camp. This experience helped him review some of the philosophical readings he had done as a philosphy student at the Sorbonne, as well as those readings he took an interest in following the end of the war. In this way, Semprún went over various authors (Immanuel Kant, André Malraux, Edmund Husserl, Jacques Maritain, Martin Heidegger, Karl Marx, Hannah Arendt, Jean Paul Sartre, Paul Ricoeur or Primo Levi) arguing their relationship with the issue of Evil.
The purpose of this paper is to consider the contribution of news journalism in the democratic system that requires civic virtues. And to think also the contributions of news journalism and the media system to the ideal of deliberative democracy. Contribution to configure what is here called the republican face of journalism. That is, the theoretical and policy dimensions of journalism in terms of commitment to the democratic system. In the information society, to recover the ideal of the good life for building a genuine democracy requires information and channeling mechanisms that enable citizen participation. Can the media meet these two elements which characterize the contemporary civic virtue?
John Stuart Mill is an author who generates fascination and loyalty in equal measure with indifference and paternalism. The former is due to the outstanding coherence between his ideas, his life and his political actions, while the latter has led to him being denounced as an author who is too eclectic and difficult to classify, being neither liberal or socialist. At present, we are witnessing a flood of publications in a celebration of the two-hundredth anniversary of Mill’s birth. This is an appropriate moment to consider why Mill and his work continue to gain depth of meaning and relevance to the present. This article focuses on his political philosophy, one of the least studied aspects of his work, though increasingly valued. We examine his thoughts on participatory and deliberative democracy, in addition to his call for the extension of these principals to the private and economic sphere.
There are different ways of remembering, perhaps as many as are the modes of narration. Here we analyze three main panoramas, three strategies available to individuals, groups or institutions to deal with memories, especially the memories of political or social conflicts: forgetting or, more accurately, denial and trying to forget; continuing old conflicts by other means, at a symbolic level, forgiving or, more accurately, trying to reconcile conflicting memories.
The growing importance of memory in all approximation to past has obligated history to give answers to their questions, objections and ambiguities, beyond historicist topics. Also is pertinent to try an «anamnestic history», inspired in the contributions of critical or benjaminian memory, that moreover finds in the experience of exile very fertile motives of reflexion. Certain writings of María Zambrano are a good example of this fecundity.
