    El monolingüismo del huésped

In a footnote to Derrida’s Monolingualism of the Other (originally published in French in 1996), the French philosopher introduces his concept of “monolingualism of the guest”. Derrida’s monolingualism of the guest revises the notion of mother tongue as distinctively described by Hannah Arendt. In this article, I will investigate Derrida’s “monolingualism of the guest” by relying on his notion of “idiom” and on his thinking about translation. My aim will be to demonstrate how Derrida’s ideas can help exploring the relationship between language and hospitality, a key concept embedded in his concept of “monolingualism of the guest”.En una nota a pie de página de su El monolingüismo del otro (publicado originalmente en francés en 1996), Derrida presenta una reflexión sobre la lengua que denomina “el monolingüismo del huésped”.

This paper introduces what I will call the “topological paradox of philosophy”. Philosophy claims to find a place among other disciplines and forms of knowledge and, in consequence, within the university; but it becomes u-topic under the idea of an activity freely exercised. Philosophy cannot find a place within the university, but it cannot help to claim for one. The paradox has multiple dimensions, but it is non-solvable. So its future in the university will require to renounce to find a place like other disciplines. At the end, only if it accepts to answer not only to itself but to the demands of the pre-philosophical, it will be able to make a space for itself not among but between the disciplines.

The paper inquires into two philosophical positions, the first one emphasizes the importance of the will and the second one prefers the understanding. These anthropological options are decisive in order to explain other questions (God, knowledge, ethics, nature and history), and have many practical consequences too. After a genealogical exposition, we study the cases of Leibniz and Spinoza because they unify both dimensions but in a different way.

This purpose of this paper is to investigate about the notion of “passivity” which characterizes the subject in Emmanuel Levinas ethical project. A subject that is, and is dedicated to, the Other (Autri) beyond all voluntary decisions and any factual relationships. The “passivity” is the notion that permits the understanding of the levisianic contexture of subjectivity, its mode of constituting, of “materializing”, as something which we will call its “second condition”. Passivity appears in Levinas’ thinking as the notion that allows him to articulate his ethics, as far as it is based in a responsibility which occurs in the extreme abandonment of the certitudes of the “self”, the “I”.El objetivo de este artículo es indagar acerca de la noción de “pasividad” que caracteriza al sujeto en el proyecto ético de Emmanuel Levinas.

One can speak about laughter in many ways; one can take, for example, a physiological approach, or a psychological one, or even a third sociological one, which the ancients did not completely disregard. Cicero, however, preferred to focus on the rhetorical possibilities of laughter and humor. The relevance of jest and jokes in order to get an audience’s favor or to ridicule an adversary is undeniable; but, despite their effectiveness and given their effectiveness, that jest and jokes can also exceed the limits of what is acceptable or advisable is also undeniable. An issue that is all the more serious since the orator can and should make joke of matters which, taken in themselves, are not funny. Cicero's rhetoric on laughter raises the issue of, and flows into, the ethics and the tactics that are attentive to the study and possible codification of the guiding principles in using such a powerful resource as humor. It is a resource that should be used in an advisable, appropriate, and dignified manner (for all these manners can be translated the Greek prepon and the latin decorum), which presupposes that it is not always so used, and, with respect to this at the following pages, presupposes that there is laughter that inappropriate, that is almost shameful, and that can result in difficulties for whoever causes the laughter and uses that humor, since it is always dangerous to laugh at the powerful. Undoubtedly, Cicero was an individual who very much insulted others, with wit, humor, and sometimes with extraordinary aggressiveness.

In this article a double and closely related issues will be addressed. On one hand the academy and many government research projects call for interdisciplinarity, but paradoxically, it is negatively sanctioned as can be seen at present in bio-art’s activities. Philosophy also suffers this penalty because in one of its areas is multidisciplinary and seems to don’t have a proper function while, in another of its aspects, is enclosed in a role of excessive purism. In both cases, and with the thought of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (What is Philosophy?), We note that philosophy is located at the map of academic and general knowledge in a declining place for the two reasons: in one of its activities because it’s flexible and articulating, and in another of them, due to their “tone of distinction” under the paradigm of the sage that make her a court and not an active and productive knowledge. In line with this diagnosis will outline the importance of renaming the category of “contamination” with the thoughts of Deleuze, Guattari and Michel Serres, leading to an area of mixtures between knowledge as a way to actively combat the aforementioned problems or, at least, to unravel aporias crossing the relationship between disciplines and the academy in general with their environment.

    Get PDF
Does democracy, understood as the moral horizon of western culture, require the end of philosophy as the ultimate foundational knowledge? Do all the narratives of the end of philosophy include the defeat of truth in favor of opinion, a transformation and subordination of the philosophical discourse itself to the form of coexistence that is considered most just, most open, most inclusive? In other words, must the question about what type of philosophical vocabulary and approach best serves human freedom be the most fundamental philosophical question? We then should have to ask philosophy the same terrifying questions Lenin put to freedom: philosophy yes, but for whom? To do what? In this essay all these questions are investigated through two narratives that theorize the end of philosophy with more that four hundred years of difference: Thomas Hobbes in The Leviathan and Gianni Vattimo and Richard Rorty. The game of mirrors that is established in this text tries to be a reflection about the nature of the philosophical discourse and its implementation in the university system inside the context of democracy in the twenty-first century.

The present article seeks to offer a detailed analysis of the similarities and differences that may be established between the concepts of sovereignty that formulate F. Giner and F. Suarez. In the first place, we will analyze the shades that present the concept of corpus mysticum, in order to go deeply into the democratic base that implies this idea. In the second place, we will try to make a short work of this phenomenon of recovery of the legacy of the classic Hispanic iusnaturalists that was carried out, paradoxically, not by those who presented themselves as traditionalists, but by the reformed and liberal Krausist premises, which supported an innovative lecture, in part essentially egalitarian and democratic, by its doctrines. Finally, we will dig into its common effort to increase the value of the social and democratic role of the traditional political Hispanic institutions, whose lecture gives us back a politically pluralist and democratic landscape.

    Get PDF
This paper presents a critique of the decisionist interpretation of the concept of sovereignty which Carl Schmitt proposes in Political Theology. Starting from Schmitt’s theory of secularisation, I try to show that the capacity for decision on the state of exception which defines the Schmittian sovereign is not absolute but remains determined by an immanent concrete order that the State must represent. I question thereby the Hobbesian roots of Schmitt’s political theology, which rather is in debt with Hegel’s theory of the State, and I expose the juridic-political reason of Schmitt’s disagreement with National Socialism.
