INTERCULTURALISM IN THORSTEN BECKER'S NOVEL "VICTORY WITH NUMBERS"

    No full text
German Author Thorsten Becker's novel "Galib with Numbers", published in 2004, is an important work that conveys Eastern/Turkish culture (Turkey and immigration) from a German perspective. The novel, besides bringing European and Turkish culture face to face, allows a German writer to make Turks and their mentality understandable through empathy. In addition, the novel provides an opportunity to compare eastern and western cultures. Since cultural diversity increases the interest in foreign cultures, the field of literature, in which this interest is reflected, can be seen as a tool to promote other cultures. This novel, in which there is an intercultural conflict that includes issues such as identity problem/Otherness, offers the opportunity to see how Turkish culture is evaluated as the other. As a German writer, Becker reflects people of different nationalities, cultures, impressions and deals with Turkey/Turkish impressions through empathy. Combining his own impressions/evaluations within the scope of themes such as the Eastern theme and being the Other, Becker shows that he can create a work that is of great importance in multicultural societies and has an intercultural quality. Keywords; Interculturalism, Pursuit of Eastern, Cultural Conflict

NEW DESIGNS WITH 3D PRINTING IN BASKET KNITTING TECHNIQUE

    No full text
Digitally designed artworks can be reproduced and always produce an identical copy of a 3D printed object. This style of production is the exact opposite of the traditional craft in which handicrafts are produced individually. It is almost impossible to implement mass production and different prototypes in traditional arts, which are based on the craftsman's personal skill. Thus the question of whether it is possible to combine traditional art and 3D digital world with contemporary production practices is raised. In the study conducted with this approach; The questions of, "Is it possible to achieve a hybrid framework by combining Basket Knitting Craft and 3D Printing Technique?”, "Is it possible to form new dynamic practices that would meet the new technological trends?" and "Is it possible to transfer the cultural richness to the digital platforms?" constitute the fundamental problems of the study. In order to provide solutions to the study problem; By creating a hybrid environment between traditional art of Basket Knitting Craft and 3D printing technique, contemporary basket design that will enrich the artistic works and enable cultural values to take place in the digital environment that is required by industrialization have been made. The obtained hybrid basket were presented in the study, and the data of the digital design environment were transferred to the designers who produce and design with the current versions and modern perspectives as per the requirement of modernization. In this study, where the unique is desired but the power of ethnic origins is felt, new trends are supported with cooperation of technology and craftsmanship

This study aims to scrutinize historical development, current situation, and main problems of the Afghanistan Education System and the political, social, and economic dimensions of international aid to the country that are made to solve these problems. Following a brief analysis of the historical progress of the Afghanistan education system; the current state of the system and primary, secondary, and community based educational activities in the country in the period ensuing the 2001 US intervention and lasting until 2020 and the place of the foreign aid in the education system and its effects on this system are explained. The resources of this study encompass books; articles; media broadcasts; direct observations in the field and the information obtained through interviews with students, teachers, bureaucrats, politicians, relief workers, and project beneficiaries; and websites, reports and periodical publications of the United Nations, international organizations, state-run institutions of the donor countries, Afghanistan Ministry of Education and Ministry of Economy, which carries out non-governmental organizations affairs in Afghanistan. Through the analysis of the data gathered from accessible sources, it has been revealed that the decades' lasting wars, internal conflicts, poverty, and disasters have destroyed the Afghan Education Sector and unfortunately, no permanent and sustainable solutions could be developed yet despite the significant gains accomplished thanks to intense efforts for nearly two decades. Lacking enough resources and means to solve these problems, Afghanistan remains dependent on aid. Hence, international aid should continue in the field of education as in the other fields more systematically and comprehensively for Afghanistan which is regrettably does not seem to be able to disentangle from this deadlock in the short or medium run and geographical imbalances in the distribution of both public services and international aid should be eliminated

    No full text
Distance education, which is thought to become more widespread in the near future, has become important with the COVID-19 pandemic. Distance education has been used as an important method for the continuity of education and training in this process where it is not possible to continue face-to-face education. Due to the sudden transition to distance education, it has been a matter of curiosity how this process has been realized and what effects it has had (Karahan at al.,2020, p.1). This study was conducted to determine the effects of the distance education process put into practice during the pandemic process on students based on teachers' opinions. The sample consisted of 70 teachers who were working in different branches and different regions in Turkey in the academic year of 2020-2021. In the study, a questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. As a result of the research, it was found that distance education had both positive and negative effects on students, students were affected negatively in terms of social-affective aspects, and screen addiction problems may be encountered because they cannot socialize. Again, it was concluded that distance education negatively affects disadvantaged students and may reduce their academic success, and parent involvement in the process has both positive and negative effects
