    Exploring the therapeutic potential of microwave-assisted biosynthesized silver nanoparticles using Erica manipuliflora Salisb.: A comprehensive study on anticancer and antibacterial potentials

    Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) continue to attract interest due to their potential applications in biomedicine, especially in relation to their antibacterial and anticancer properties. In this respect, it is important to develop biosynthesis techniques that are environmentally friendly and include new sources. This is the first report on microwave-assisted green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Erica manipuliflora Salisb. (E.m AgNPs). In this study, the anti-cancer and antibacterial activity of E.m AgNPs and E. manipuliflora extracts were evaluated. Characterization of E.m AgNPs were performed using UV–Vis spectroscopy FT-IR, XRD, SEM and TEM analyses. The UV–Vis absorption spectrum showed the characteristic peak of E.m AgNPs at ?max = 425 nm. The SEM and TEM results indicated that the nanoparticles were spherical and ranged in size from 2.45 to 9.95 nm. The antibacterial results, it was determined that E.m AgNPs (50 mg mL?1) (8.4–21.1 mm ZOI) caused more effective inhibition on both gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis) and gram negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria compared to all plant extracts (50 mg mL?1) (8.13–17.16 mm ZOI). Among the cancer (MCF-7 and HT-29) and healthy (HaCaT and HEK-293) cell lines, E.m AgNPs exhibited the highest cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells (IC50: 87.22 ?g mL?1). The hexane extract was the most effective inhibitory extract on cell proliferation of all cell lines and showed the highest cell inhibition in MCF-7 cells (IC50: 43.06 ?g mL?1).     Religious motives in Abraham Maslow’s psychologıcal approach

    Bu çalışma, 1908-1970 yılları arasında yaşamış olan Abraham Harold Maslow’un psikolojiye olan katkılarını ve eserlerinde geçen dinî motifleri araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Bu amaçla yapılan çalışma, bir literatür taramasıdır. Abraham Maslow ile ilgili yapılan çalışmaların çoğunluğu “kendini gerçekleştirme” kavramı ile ilgilidir. Bu araştırma, Abraham Maslow’un eserlerindeki dinî motifleri ortaya koyması bakımından önemlidir. Araştırma sonucuna göre Maslow, din kavramını “örgütlenmiş din” ve “öznel/doğalcı din” olarak iki farklı yaklaşımla ele almıştır. Tanrı’nın insandan ayrı aşkın bir varlık olduğu görüşünü kabul etmediği için din adamlarından, kurallar ve ritüellerden oluşan örgütlenmiş din yerine insanın Tanrıyı mucizevi olaylarda deneyimlediği din fikrini savunmuştur. İnsanın özünde var olan kutsallığı keşfetmesinin önemli olduğunu, kutsallığın din adamlarında, kitaplarda ya da coğrafi bölgelerde olmadığını ifade etmiştir. Kutsal mabetlerde, belirli gün ve şekillerde yapılan ibadetlerin insanda derin duygular uyandırmasının mümkün olmadığı görüşünü savunmuştur. Maslow’a göre Peygamberler; mistik deneyimler yaşayan, algıları yüksek, derin düşünen insanlardır. İçlerinden gelen ilhamı insanlara iletirler. Bu yönleriyle sanatçılarla benzerlik göstermektedirler. Maslow için cennet, dünyadan ayrı bir yerde değil, insanın kendi özündedir. Kişi cennetini kendi betimler, doruk deneyimler sayesinde cennete gider ve gelir. Doruk deneyimler ise insana en yüksek düzeyde mutluluk veren ve insanı doyuma ulaştıran anlardır. Maslow, bu anları “ilahî deneyimler” ya da “aşkın bilinç deneyimleri” olarak isimlendirir. Kendini gerçekleştiren insanların özellikleri ile dinlerin istediği ideal insan özelliklerini karşılaştıran Maslow, ikisinin de benzer olduğunu bu yüzden kendini gerçekleştiren insanların herhangi bir dine inanmasalar bile dindar olduklarını ifade etmiştir. Kısaca Maslow, sağlıklı bir psikolojiye sahip olduğunu düşündüğü insanlardan yola çıkarak ideal bir insan betimlemesi yapmış, bu ideal insanın her kültürde, her dinde, her dönemde ideal olan insan ile aynı olduğunu vurgulamıştır.This study aims to examine Abraham Harold Maslow's contributions to psychology, as well as the religious motifs found in his works. Most studies on Maslow focus on the concept of "self-actualization." This research is important in that it reveals the religious motifs present in Maslow's works. According to the results of the research, Maslow approached the concept of religion in two different ways: organized religion and subjective/natural religion. Since he did not accept the idea of God as a transcendent being separate from humans, he advocated for a concept of religion where humans experience God through miraculous events, rather than organized religion consisting of clergy, rules, and rituals. He expressed that discovering the sanctity inherent in human nature is important and that holiness does not reside in clergy, books, or specific geographical regions. Maslow argued that worship conducted in sacred temples, on specific days, and in certain forms, is unlikely to evoke deep feelings in people. According to Maslow, prophets are individuals who experience mystical states, possess heightened perception, and think deeply. They convey the inspiration they receive to people, which makes them similar to artists in certain respects. For Maslow, heaven is not a place separate from the world but is found within the individual. A person creates their own heaven and moves between it and the world through peak experiences. Peak experiences are moments that provide the highest level of happiness and satisfaction. Maslow referred to these moments as "divine experiences" or "transcendent consciousness experiences." Comparing the characteristics of self-actualized individuals with the ideal person as defined by religions, Maslow found similarities and stated that self-actualized individuals, even if they do not adhere to any religion, are inherently religious. In short, Maslow created an ideal human profile based on individuals who he believed had healthy psychology and emphasized that this ideal person is the same across all cultures, religions, and eras

    The CMS statistical analysis and combination tool: Combine

    This paper describes the Combine software package used for statistical analyses by the CMS Collaboration. The package, originally designed to perform searches for a Higgs boson and the combined analysis of those searches, has evolved to become the statistical analysis tool presently used in the majority of measurements and searches performed by the CMS Collaboration. It is not specific to the CMS experiment, and this paper is intended to serve as a reference for users outside of the CMS Collaboration, providing an outline of the most salient features and capabilities. Readers are provided with the possibility to run Combine and reproduce examples provided in this paper using a publicly available container image. Since the package is constantly evolving to meet the demands of ever-increasing data sets and analysis sophistication, this paper cannot cover all details of Combine. However, the online documentation referenced within this paper provides an up-to-date and complete user guide. © CERN, for the benefit of the CMS Collaboration 2024

    Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Hemşirelik Ana Bilim Dalı, Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Hemşireliği Bilim DalıBu çalışma solunum sıkıntısı yaşayan term yenidoğanlara terapötik pozisyon ve terapötik pozisyonla birlikte anne sütü kokusunun konfor ve yaşam bulgularına etkisini belirlemek amacı ile randomize kontrollü deneysel araştırma türünde yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın örneklemini yenidoğan yoğun bakım ünitesinde yatan toplam 66 term yenidoğan oluşturmuştur. Veri toplama araçları olarak bilgi formu ve Yenidoğan Konfor Davranış Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tanımlayıcı istatistikler, ki-kare, Fisher Freeman Halton testi, Greenhouse-Geisser, Friedman testi, çoklu karşılaştırmalarda tekrarlayan ölçümlerde ANOVA testi için Bonferroni ve Friedman testi için Wicoxon, Bağımsız gruplar t-testi, Mann-Whitney U testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada postnatal yaş haricinde tanıtıcı bilgiler açısından grupların benzer olduğu belirlenmiştir (p>0,05). Bulgulara göre sadece terapötik pozisyon alan yenidoğan bebeklerinin yaşam değerleri skorlarının ve konfor skorlarının zamana bağlı değişime göre anlamlı olarak farklılaşmadığı (p>0.05) bulunmuştur. Bununla birlikte 30 dakika aralıklarla 120 dakika boyunca terapötik pozisyon + anne sütü kokusu alan yenidoğan bebeklerin ise, konfor skorlarının ve yaşam değerlerinden olan O2 satürasyonunun zamana bağlı değişime göre anlamlı olarak farklılaştığı bulunmuştur (sırasıyla; p0.05) according to the time-dependent change. However, it was found that the comfort scores and O2 saturation of newborn babies who were in therapeutic position+breast milk smell for 120 minutes with 30-minute intervals, differed significantly according to the change over time (p<0.001, p<0.05, p<, 0.001). As a result, it was concluded that therapeutic position + breast milk odor significantly increased the saturation values (30 minutes supine position and 120 minutes right lateral position) and comfort levels (60 minutes prone 90 minutes left lateral and 120 minutes right lateral positions) of term newborns.     Melatonin prevents histopathologies stem from cadmium chloride in pregnant mice lungs

    Heavy metals may cause structural and functional changes in organs. Cadmium, taken into the body through oral and respiratory routes, can lead to lesions. Cadmium may lead to lesions by accumulating in organs. The lungs are significantly affected by cadmium. Melatonin, an antioxidant hormone with therapeutic effects, is secreted by the pineal gland. The aim of the study is to treat cadmium-induced lesions in the lungs of pregnant mice with Melatonin. Four groups were created with 24 pregnant mice, named Control, Cadmium Chloride, Melatonin, and Melatonin + Cadmium Chloride groups (n: 6) Cadmium Chloride (2 mg/kg/bw) and Melatonin (3 mg/kg/bw) were given orally through gavage during pregnancy (21 days) After routine histological procedures, the lung tissues were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and evaluated under a light and electron microscope. ANOVA tests were applied for one-way analysis of variance, and LSD tests were applied for pairwise comparisons (p < 0.05) The average lung weight decreased in the Cadmium Chloride group (p: 0.03) The average lung weight in the Cadmium Chloride + Melatonin group was found to be close to the control group (p: 0.06) Cadmium Chloride caused thickening of the lung alveolar wall, inflammatory cell infiltration, and fibrin deposition. Because the lesions were not observed in the Melatonin group, lesions may be prevented by melatonin. Additional studies may be useful to determine the protective effect of Melatonin at different doses of Cadmium Chloride. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2024

    The relationship between lower extremity muscle tightness and pain and disability in individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain

    BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a common health issue, and such pains are often associated with muscle tightness. Understanding the link between lower back pain and tight lower extremity muscles is essential for effective pain management and enhanced quality of life. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between lower extremity muscle tightness and pain and disability in individuals with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP). METHODS: A total of 52 individuals with NSLBP were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Lower extremity muscle tightness was assessed using various clinical tests, including the Active Knee Extension Test, Active Straight Leg Raise, Ober Test, and Modified Thomas Test. Pain intensity and disability were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale and the Oswestry Disability Index, respectively. Statistical analyses were conducted to assess the correlation between muscle tightness, pain, and disability. RESULTS: The study found weak to moderate negative correlations between lower extremity muscle tightness and both pain intensity and disability in individuals with NSLBP (r: -0.287 to -0.526, p < 0.05). Dominant and non-dominant extremities exhibited differences in muscle flexibility, with the dominant extremity showing greater flexibility (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In individuals with NSLBP, lower extremity muscle tightness is closely related to pain severity and disability. These findings suggest that lower extremity muscle tightness plays a significant role in the severity of low back pain and disabilities. Additionally, the observed flexibility difference between dominant and non-dominant extremities warrants further investigation for more personalized treatment approaches.Acknowledgments Thank you to all participants

    Search for new physics in high-mass diphoton events from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for new physics in high-mass diphoton events from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV. The data set was collected in 2016–2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb?1. Events with a diphoton invariant mass greater than 500 GeV are considered. Two different techniques are used to predict the standard model backgrounds: parametric fits to the smoothly-falling background and a first-principles calculation of the standard model diphoton spectrum at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The first technique is sensitive to resonant excesses while the second technique can identify broad differences in the invariant mass shape. The data are used to constrain the production of heavy Higgs bosons, Randall-Sundrum gravitons, the large extra dimensions model of Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali (ADD), and the continuum clockwork mechanism. No statistically significant excess is observed.     Utilizing genetic programming to evaluate and predict roller-compacted concrete pavements reinforced with coal powder and basalt fiber

    Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement technology has drawn significant attention in recent years, thanks to its many advantages over conventional paving materials. The main benefits of RCC include decreased shrinkage, reduced life-cycle expenses, early access to traffic and a decrease in the urban heat island effect. This study proposed a cost-effective method to address the disposal of coal powder (CP), which is an important contributor of environmental problems, by integrating it into the manufacturing of RCC. Cement was replaced with CP at weight ratios of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. CP was substituted for cement, with weight ratios of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The albedo and mechanical properties of the obtained RCC mixtures were measured. The albedo of the RCC mixture with 20% CP decreased approximately 2.3 times in comparison to that of the reference mixture. After 28 days, RCC mixes had compressive strengths of 26–38 MPa and flexural strengths of 4.3–6.1 MPa. Flexural and splitting tensile strengths increased substantially with BF. RCC mixtures with 5% CP and 0.5% BF improved freeze-thaw resilience after 100 cycles. The genetic algorithm approach may improve RCC design optimisation. Thus, RCC made with CP may be environmentally friendly and Sustainable. © 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

    Exercise capacity and muscle strength in patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure: a retrospective follow-up study

    Background. Due to their relationship with clinical progression, follow-up of exercise capacity and muscle strength is important for optimal disease management in patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure. We aimed to retrospectively analyze exercise capacity and muscle strength trajectory over approximately 2 years. Methods. Exercise capacity was assessed using an exercise stress test with the modified Bruce protocol on a treadmill, hand grip and knee extensor strength using a hand dynamometer, and body composition using a bioelectrical impedance device. Exercise capacity, muscle strength, and body composition follow-up data recorded between 2020 and 2022 were compared. Results. Fifteen patients [median age from 17 (first assessment) to 18 years (last assessment), 5 females)] with a 20-month median follow-up time were analyzed retrospectively. There was an increase in weight, height, body mass index, and body fat weight (p0.05). The changes in heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation were higher in the last test than in the first test (p0.05). Conclusions. After 20 months of follow-up, exercise capacity and muscle strength did not decline; instead, the body mass index and fat weight increased. Patients who have undergone the Fontan procedure may not be experiencing a decline in exercise capacity and muscle strength over relatively short time periods during childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood
