Modelling Stochastic Volatility of The Stock Market: A Nigerian Experience
Get PDFIn this paper, The GARCH (1,1) model is presented and some results for the existence and uniqueness outlined. Other extensions of the GARCH model including EGARCH, PARCH and TARCH models were presented. The daily stock price of Dangote Cement (Dangocem) was used to test the performance of the above named models with respect to some stylized facts of volatility of financial data: fat tail, volatility clustering, volatility persistence, mean reversion and leverage effect. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC) and the Hannan-Quinn criterion (HQ) were used to rate the performance of the models. The results show that the return series are stationary. The summary statistics showed that the return series has a fat tail. From the Q-Q plot, it was seen that the assumption of normality was spurious. The parameter estimation result showed that the volatility of the return series has the mean reversion property.. News impact was asymmetric and there is the presence of leverage effect. It was also seen that the volatility process was driven more by negative innovation. Overall the GARCH(1,1) and the TARCH model outperform the other model

Hypothetical Plants of Venus and Objects of Unidentified Nature: Life on Venus
No full textThe results of a series of Soviet VENERA missions are the only existing direct observations of Venus' surface. Recently, a series of studies was devoted to strange entities in re-processed images that were returned from the surface of the planet Venus by the VENERA landers, 33 and 40 years ago. Experiments in television photography instrumented by the landers VENERA-13 and VENERA-14 (March, 1 and 5, 1982) yielded 37 panoramas (or their fragments) of the Venus surface at the landing sites. The panoramas were re-examined using modern processing techniques and revealed “stems” - objects possessing apparent terramorphic features of Earth-like plants. “Plants” or “stems” are thin knotty vertical trunks on the surface of Venus that have a thickness of 0.3-3 cm and are 0.2 to 0.5 m tall. On close objects, one can see that the “stem” at the top end is provided with a large bulge, a "burgeon" or “flower”, with petals surrounding a bright center

Get PDFIn this paper we report some properties of thin film photocells prepared on the basis of Al/p-CdS/n-CdS/Zn1-xCdxS heterojunctions. These heterojunctions were prepared by the method of chemical and electrochemical deposition from solution in a uniform work cycle. The open-circuit photovoltage (Uoc), short circuit-current density (Iscc) and efficiency of the Al/p-CdS/n-CdS/Zn0.6Cd0.4S heterojunctions were 650 mV; 35 mA/cm2 and 11%, accordingly. The I-U fill factor was 0.68. The value of Uoc increases and Iscc decreases by increasing of Zn in Zn1-xCdxS material

Get PDFAntioxidant activity of chloroform extract of root parts of Inula racemosa was evaluated by measuring the scavenging activity of the extract on stable 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) exhibiting an interesting antioxidant profile. The reducing power was determined using a modification of Zou method. Secondary Metabolites and Bioactivities of Melastoma Malabathricum (L.) Smith: An Anti-Diarrheal Plant of Bangladesh
Get PDFMelastoma malabathricum (L.) Smith; a naturally growing plant of Bangladesh is investigated in the present experiment for its secondary metabolites, cytotoxic and antibacterial activities. Among the secondary metabolites alkaloid, flavonoid, sterol, tannin and glycoside found to be present while saponin is absent in its leaf. Ethanolic extract of M. malabathricum leaf showed significant cytotoxicity with the LC50 value of 19.38μg/ml. In the antibacterial screening, the highest zone of inhibition record was 8 mm (at 100mg/ml) and the lowest was 5 mm (at 50mg/ml). These significant cytotoxic and antibacterial activities also corroborate its ethno-medicinal practices.
