Curial e Güelfa, a romance of humanistic chivalry attributed to Enyego d’Àvalos, derives from the Provençal lyrical tradition and from the Matter of Britain. Its supple and Boccaccian prose is garnished with Neoplatonic scenes and with a mythology written in Luciano’s half-joking style. The book, written in an italianized Catalan, shows the influence of Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch, and points to French (and Franco-Italian?) chivalric readings well known in the courts of northern Italy, especially the court of Milan, where D’Àvalos resided for many years.
Medieval libraries and manuscripts reveal a certain physical proximity between didactic works and old Franco-Italian songs which readily resort to adages and exempla to convey their inspirational message: Farsala is like a ‘mirror of princes’ for which Pompey is the model; The Book of Hector and Hercules offers a more general reflexion on life and death. In these epics, Fortune plays an important role and the morality advocated is closer to the ethics of neo-Stoicism. Franco-Italian Cultural Translation in the 'Prophesies de Merlin' and the 'Storia di Merlino'
This article argues that northern Italian adaptations of the Merlin story mediate the French text culturally by exploiting alternative social dimensions within the narrative. While the Franco-Venetian Prophecies de Merlin juxtaposes the cultural discourses of Arthurian literature with ascetic and communal values, the Florentine Storia di Merlino goes further in deconstructing the social assumptions of Arthurian narrative
This paper takes into consideration several translation and linguistic issues concerning the Secretum secretorum and its various Romance versions, including the Franco-Italian Amaestramens (ms. Paris BnF fr. 821). Romance inflections of Latin the words cautela, custodia, munimen, providentia, and salus are considered as well.KEYWORDS:Secretum secretorum – Traductology – Lexicology – LatinismSecretum secretorum – Traduttologia – Lessicologia – Latinism
The article examines narrative schemes, motifs, models and concepts of the young hero that pass from the French chansons de geste to the heroic texts in French-Italian. In these texts – here studied both in general and through focalized readings – a constant emphasis on the tribulations the hero must endure is an indispensable condition of heroic poiesis. In the Geste Francor, and in Rolandin in particular, a reworking of the heroic typologies also emerges through Roland’s original enfances.KEYWORDS: - eroe - enfances - chanson de geste - Geste Francor - Rolandinhero - enfances - chanson de geste - Geste Francor - Rolandi
In this article I show how the Franco-Italian version of Aliscans (ms. M) in comparison with theother versions of the poem (represented by mss. A) is closer to the canon in Oitanic epic. In itstext, in fact, the attraction of the courtly romance is limited to a superficial level, unlike mss. A,in which it significantly influences the representation of one of the protagonists of the poem (Rainouart).KEYWORDS:Aliscans – Franco-Italian epics – mimetic rivalry – trial – duelAliscans – Epica franco-italiana – rivalità mimetica – prova – duell
East and West: Two Decades of Scholarship on the Medieval Francophone Periphery
This article is essentially a survey of scholarship on French literature in Italy and Franco-Italian literature between ca. 2000 and 2020, with an introduction which attempts to situate recent contributions within the history of the discipline as a whole. Brief reference is made to scholarship on modern Francophone literature and a more extensive comparison with that on Anglo-Norman or “Insular French”. Franco-Italian literature can best be seen as an integral but distinctive part of medieval literature in the langue d’oïl
This work represents a first attempt to compare the linguistic system of two Franco-Italian texts with texts in Old Italian, Old Veneto, and Old French, by using morpho-syntactically annotated corpora following the guidelines of the Penn Treebank Project. The two Franco-Italian texts investigated are Entrée d’Espagne and Orlandino, from the Geste Francor. The study investigates the syntax of relative clauses in the two Franco-Italian texts with the aim to provide a first description of their linguistic systems. In so doing, we determine the nature of the hybrid linguistic system of the two Franco-Italian texts by individuating those features that are shared with the closest Old Romance languages and those that are idiosyncratic to Franco-Italian. Fra cronache e poemi franco-veneti: 'Rolandin', Aleramo e Matilde di Canossa
The article compares the legend of Berta and Milone and the childhood of Orlando as preserved in the Italian Geste Francor and the legend of Aleramo and of Matilde di Canossa’s birth. These legends tell a very similar story and their first certain attestations are approximately contemporary. This means they probably were developed together. The article asserts the original legend was the legend of Orlando. The legend of Orlando would be itself an Italian elaboration of an Old-French chanson de geste concerning Berta and Milone’s clandestine love
