No full textThis article examines the re-emergence of two biblical episodes – Joseph undermined by Potiphar’s wife (Gen. 39:6-20) and the story of Susanna and the Elders (Dan. 13) – in two medieval texts: Sadius et Galo, a story from Walter Map’s De nugis curialium, and in the Franco-Italian chanson de geste Huon d’Auvergne. The episodes both present a failed attempt at seduction and activate two opposite archetypes of female sexuality responding to the same patriarchal construct. In the first the subject of seduction is feminine and the object is masculine, in the second the roles are reversed in gender

No full textThis discussion considers the two armed figures at the edge of the prothyrum of Verona Cathedral, which are traditionally identified as Roland and Oliver. In light of the principles governing the entire composition, and in particular its strict symmetry, the first figure is indeed Charlemagne’s nephew, while the second is more likely identifiable with Saint Romanus, ostiarius and martyr. Both figures should be read as allegories of Fortitudo and are inspired by the biblical description of the columns of the Temple of Solomon, Boaz and Jachin

No full textThe central nucleus of one of the excerpta of the Legenda mirabilis, translated from Arabic into Latin by Alphonsus Bonihominis around the middle of the fourteenth century, has correspon - dences with other texts roughly contemporary but of different geographical origin, namely Purgatorio di Ludovico di Francia (or di Sur), Visiones Georgii, and Huon d’Auvergne. All of these texts transmit the ‘royal goddess’ motif, present in varying forms in Celtic culture and ‘turned’ in a demonic key. The royal goddess, possessor of sovereignty, is capable of bestowing it to those she loves

No full textThis article contests the identification of Giovanni da Nono as the author of the Entrée d’Espagne, a hypothesis proposed in 1989 by André de Mandach. This revised hypothesis is based on a study of this scholar’s works and suggests on the contrary that the author of the Entrée knew da Nono’s De hedificatione and implicitly criticized it in his own work, a conclusion based on onomastic analysis of the characters in De edificazione urbis Phatolomie

No full textThis contribution intends to lay the methodological groundwork for a topographical and prosopographical investigation of the Arthurian Romance Prophecies de Merlin and presents the results of a close examination of the prophetic sections. With regard to Merlin’s prophecies, attention focuses in particular on the geographical references to the area surrounding Padua and Venice and on the historical characters active in that area during the thirteenth century. Finally, I propose a transcription of the commentary preserved in the margins of the MS Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Str. App. 29 (243), an important witness of the Prophecies de Merlin for exploring early reception of the text
