MANAGEMENT MODEL FOR HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS BASED ON RANKING OF UNIVERSITIES

    Get PDF
The demands and pressures of the market are felt in higher education, necessitating continuous improvement in every aspect. A desirable approach would be implementing a management model of excellence in education, particularly emphasizing evaluation, and service enhancements. Such assessments can influence the positioning of universities in the market and enable them to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This study proposes a conceptual model of excellence management for HEIs (Higher Education Institutions), based on analysing university rankings. The model will be developed by identifying convergent factors of the EFQM and BCPE Management Models, verifying convergence factors among the leading five international rankings, and presenting the procedures for using Rankings as Performance Indicators. This research has a bibliographic character. As a result of this research, it was possible to propose a management model of excellence in which university rankings are used as performance indicators. The proposed model is flexible and can be utilized by different HEIs.  Article visualizations

The study focused on the socio-economic factors influencing teacher enrolment in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Zambia. It employed Human Capital Theory and a mixed-methods approach. A sequential exploratory research design was adopted for the current study. Data were collected from six provinces and comprised a total of 240 respondents. A questionnaire and interview guide were used to collect data. Qualitative data underwent thematic analysis, while quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) to generate frequencies and percentages. Multiple regression and T-test were also used to test the hypothesis. The study reveals that socio-economic factors significantly influence teacher enrolment in education programs in Zambia. Key factors such as Economic Affordability (EA) and Availability of Scholarships (AS) are highly influential, as shown by multiple regression analysis indicating significant positive relationships (EA: β=0.597, p=0.016; AS: β=0.418, p=0.004). Other significant factors include Socio-economic Background of Teachers (SBT: β=0.665, p=0.033), Government Support Programmes (GSP: β=0.316, p=0.002), Perception of Career Advancement Opportunities (PCAO: β=0.798, p=0.000), Study Leave Opportunities (SLO: β=0.676, p=0.037), Cultural and Social Norms (CSN: β=0.227, p=0.009), and Family Support and Responsibilities (FSR: β=0.612, p=0.000). Challenges such as financial constraints, lack of government support, and work-life balance were identified as significant barriers to enrolments in postgraduate programmes. Recommendations included: implementing financial support, offering flexible learning options, promoting the benefits of further education, and establishing support networks with mentorship.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The increasing prevalence of adolescent psychological health issues worldwide has become a significant public health concern affecting the future. Families, as the primary environment providing material and emotional support for adolescent development, play a crucial role in fostering growth and psychological well-being. This study employed a literature review methodology, using keywords such as family dysfunction, adolescents, and psychological health, to search for definitions of family dysfunction and relevant literature about its effects on adolescents' psychological health. The review study summarized the definitions of family dysfunction, related research, and its impact on adolescent psychological health. The findings suggest that addressing the impact of family dysfunction on adolescent psychological health effectively requires collaborative efforts from families, schools, and society. Establishing collaborative prevention and intervention mechanisms among family, schools and society, providing educational programs to improve family function, and adopting family-centered intervention strategies are essential steps toward solving this critical issue.  Article visualizations

POLITICAL USES OF SPORTS DURING THE GREEK CIVIL WAR: THE PERIOD AFTER THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE AND BEYOND, 1947-1949

    Get PDF
During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), the issue of political initiative was contested between the Greek urban governments, allied with the USA following the proclamation of the Truman Doctrine, and the Communist Party of Greece (CPG), supported by the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. In this initial Cold War phase, sports were instrumentalised by the Greek government according to the developments in military operations. Three battles were pivotal for the outcome of the Civil War: the Battle of Konitsa, the Battle of Grammos, and the Battle of Mali Madi. During the first two, the government side, under the guise of social contribution through sports, aimed either at preventing the flow of citizens towards enlistment with the Democratic Army controlled by the CPG or at the ‘national-patriotic’ and anti-communist homogenization of the Greek population. In the Battle of Mali Madi, sports were used, as openly stated, to economically support the government's military efforts against the CPG.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the association between self-concept, motivational climate, amotivation, enjoyment and vitality in physical education lessons. The study's sample comprised 313 students, including 158 males and 155 females, with a mean age of 13.9 years (SD = 87). Students were selected from three public schools within the Regional Authority of Secondary Education of Western Macedonia. Participants completed a survey including measures of self-concept, motivational climate, amotivation, enjoyment and vitality. The results of the analysis revealed that self-concept and motivational climate were positively associated with enjoyment and vitality and negatively with amotivation. Motivational climate fully mediated the effect of self-concept on enjoyment and amotivation, and partially the effect of self-concept on vitality. The findings of the study show that autonomous supportive climate in physical education lessons can be an effective practice in establishing positive experiences in the physical education lesson.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The period of the pandemic and the imposed distance teaching in all educational institutions for almost two years changed the way of approaching the subjects on many levels. Teachers were called upon in difficult circumstances and under pressure to adapt their teaching materials, to prioritize their teaching techniques differently, to make use of the available modern and asynchronous communication platforms, restructuring their teaching accordingly. In this article we will present the results of a qualitative research conducted between March-May 2023 in the region of Thessaloniki, aiming to investigate the views of French teachers of public secondary and primary education on the distance teaching of French as a foreign language. The survey involved 20 permanent and contractual French language teachers who were teaching in secondary and primary education during the period of the health crisis. A semi-structured interview was used as a research instrument in order to have a question guide leading to specific answers. Specifically, the following axes, which are the research questions of the study, were posed: a) how did they organize the foreign language lesson during distance education and which teaching techniques were chosen; b) which tools of the WebEx educational platform were used; c) to what extent did they use the educational platforms e-class & E-me education; d) how did they evaluate the degree of development of students' linguistic communicative and pragmatic skills? e) what do they consider to be the main obstacles in distance teaching of foreign language? The teachers in the study have responded to the new challenging data, adapted their teaching practice and raised questions and concerns about distance teaching of French as a foreign language.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This study aimed to establish the relationship between reading comprehension ability and reading performance in the English language among grade four learners with dyslexia in Nairobi and Kiambu counties. This study was guided by Gough and Tunmer’s Simple View of Reading and Chall’s Stages of Reading Development theories. The study adopted a correlational research design to determine the type of relationships between predictor and outcome variables. The study targeted 1,040 grade four learners with dyslexia in public primary schools. The researcher used purposive sampling in the selection of 32 special needs teachers and simple random sampling to select 166 learners with dyslexia, translating to a total of 198 respondents. Dyslexia Screen Test Junior (DST-J), document review, classroom observation schedule, interview schedule for teachers, and two comprehension tests were employed by the researcher in data collection. Furthermore, the researcher conducted a pilot study in two special units in two public primary schools, one in Nairobi County and the other in Kiambu County. The reliability of the research instruments was established using the test-retest method, resulting in a 0.82 Cronbach Alpha Coefficient. Data was collected from Special needs teachers of English, Grade four learners with dyslexia, and by reviewing relevant academic documents. Coding and analysis of the quantitative data collected was done using SPSS version 21.0. To help determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, the researcher used Pearson's' correlation coefficient and ANOVA statistical tests. The findings revealed a significant correlation coefficient (r=0.355*), with a significance level of 0.000. These findings suggested a clear relationship between reading comprehension ability levels and English performance among grade four learners with dyslexia. Notably, the study observed a trend wherein an increased risk of dyslexia corresponded to decreased levels of reading comprehension ability, emphasizing the impact of dyslexia on reading proficiency in English. The study concluded that there was a significant relationship between reading comprehension ability level and reading performance in the English language among grade four learners with Dyslexia in Nairobi and Kiambu counties, Kenya. The study recommended that the MoE should provide comprehensive training programs for teachers to enhance their understanding of dyslexia and effective instructional strategies tailored to the needs of learners with dyslexia. This training should focus on structured literacy approaches, multisensory teaching methods, and accommodations specific to students wih dyslexia. Moreover, teachers should develop and implement individualized education plans for students with dyslexia, outlining specific interventions, accommodations, and goals to support their reading development.  Article visualizations

Through a multidisciplinary study, the paper provides an in-depth examination of the relationship between singing, the socio-educational function, and the psychophysical effects that the act of singing produces in people with stuttering. Starting from a taxonomic study of the voice, it traces the most influential didactic methods accepted and tested throughout the history of 20th century school pedagogy. As well as offering a pathophysiological investigation of stuttering and the considerable benefits of using music and singing to stabilise the voice, the paper explores how this approach improves people’s ability to understand and express emotions, embrace diversity and actively engage with others in inclusive educational contexts.  Article visualizations
