THE EFFECT OF PDEODE (PREDICT-DISCUSS-EXPLAIN-OBSERVE-DISCUSS-EXPLAIN) LEARNING STRATEGY IN THE DIFFERENT ACADEMIC ABILITIES ON STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Critical thinking is one of the basic skills in the 21st century. Based on the TIMSS study (The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) on  2007, found that Indonesian student are not able to show some abstract and complex concepts in biology. The student cannot understand the complexity of life creatures and their relationship with the environment. This quasi-experimental research aims to determine: (1) differences of students’ critical thinking skills between PDEODE learning and conventional learning, (2) differences of students’ critical thinking skills between those at higher and lower academic abilities, and (3) the critical thinking skills of students due to the interaction between learning strategy and academic ability. The research design was a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control design. The sample was 40 students of State Senior High School 1 Makassar and Islamic Senior High School Athirah Makassar. The research has been carried out during semester 1 of academic year 2015-2016. Data were obtained by the pre-test and post-test using essay test. Data were analysed using ANACOVA Test. The data analysis showed that learning strategy, academic ability, as well as interaction between learning strategy and academic ability affect the students’ critical thinking skills significantly. PDEODE learning strategy affects the students' critical thinking skills as much as 71.43% higher than conventional learning. High academic ability affects the students' critical thinking skills as much as 67.03% higher than the low academic ability. It is uncovered too that students with low academic in PDEODE class with high academic students in conventional class increase critical thinking skills in the same level. It means that PDEODE learning strategy could help the low academic student to increase their critical thinking skill. PDEODE learning strategy in high academic ability is best one to increase critical thinking skills.  Article visualizations

RECONCILING APPROACHES – A GAME CENTRED APPROACH TO SPORT TEACHING AND MOSSTON’S SPECTRUM OF TEACHING STYLES

During the late 1960s and into the 1970s game-based approaches to sport teaching and coaching emerged in scholarly literature on sport and physical education teaching. Game based pedagogical approaches for games and sport teaching have been distinguished by some authors through the more prominent emphasis on guided discovery teaching and student/athlete reflective thinking than what occurs in the more historically common sport-as-sport techniques approach typified by a demonstration-replication, or ‘transmission’, method of instruction. However, guided discovery is also associated with another teaching approach that emerged in the 1960s, Style F of Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles. In this paper we posit that rather than be seen as competing approaches, game-based approaches and The Spectrum of Teaching Styles should be seen as complementary as both are governed by a fundamental proposition – pedagogical decision making. In particular, due to the Spectrum of Teaching Styles non-versus approach, it is theoretically impossible/contradictory for the Spectrum to be in opposition to or compete against any pedagogical approach. Our purpose is to examine two Game Sense learning episodes and to identify the decisions being made between the teacher and student/s. This will then allow these two Game Sense learning episodes to be placed on the Spectrum of Teaching Styles. By doing this it will detail  important pedagogical concepts and unify pedagogical decision making that take place when sport and games teaching is taken across the ‘discovery barrier’ and into an intentionally designed space to develop ‘thinking players’. In the Australian educational landscape, this discussion is timely given the Australian Curriculum Health and Physical Education key ideas to focus on both content and pedagogies that are educatively focused with an inquiry approach.  Article visualizations

THE EFFECT OF JIGSAW I INSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE ON VERBAL AND WRITING SKILLS OF STUDENTS

The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of Jigsaw I instruction technique on verbal and writing skills of students. In the study, pretest posttest quasi-experimental design was used. Study groups of the study included 50 students attending the 7th grade in a state middle school in Van province İpekyolu Township in Turkey during 2015 – 2016 academic year. The test group was assigned with random selection and included 24 students, while 26 students were assigned to the control group. Empirical applications demonstrated that Jigsaw I technique was statistically more successful in improving Turkish verbal skills of the students when compared to the activities conducted based on Turkish Curriculum (p: .001 ˂ 0.05; t: 3.427). Similarly, Jigsaw I technique was statistically more successful in improving Turkish writing skills of the students when compared to the activities conducted based on Turkish Curriculum (p: .000 ˂ 0.05; t: 4.790).  Article visualizations

COMPARISON OF BASKETBALL PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY SCORES BETWEEN TURKISH BASKETBALL LEAGUE PLAYERS WHO ARE TURKISH, AMERICAN AND OTHER NATIONS ORIGIN

The purpose of the present research is defining the changes between performance values and efficiency rates of basketball players of Turkish, American and other nation’s origin who played basketball in Spor Toto Turkish Basketball League in 2015-2016 seasons. The universe and the sample of the research consist of the total of 237 basketball players who played in Spor Toto Turkish Basketball League in 2015-2016 seasons. Of these players, 121 were from Turkey, 85 were from the United States of America and 51 were from other countries. Data related to players were obtained from Turkish Basketball Federation Spor Toto Basketball League website (www.bsl.org.tr). Efficiency scores of the players were calculated according to the formula developed by John Hollinger. The variation in performance and efficiency scores were tested with “Independent Samples t test” and “One-way ANOVA”, the source of the variation was found with Tukey test. According to the findings on the performance values, there aren’t any significant differences between American and other nation’s players, while there is a significant difference between foreign and Turkish players (p < 0.05). Accordingly, efficiency scores of Turkish players (51.88 ± 6.41) were lower than players from the United States of America (201.82 ± 12.45) and other countries (199.14 ± 18.61), and the difference between the scores was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Considering the performance and efficiency scores of basketball players who played in Spor Toto Basketball League in 2015-2016 season, it can be reported that players from the USA and other countries were more effective than Turkish players.   Article visualizations

ENHANCING STUDENTS’ LISTENING THROUGH DIGITAL STORYTELLING

The researchers pointed out that digital storytelling can be used as supporting materials for the e-learning portal in both departments, English and Indonesian department. It discussed more about the process of designing the material of a digital storytelling as teaching aid for literal listening subject. It has a significant contribution for the effective and fun English learning. Through the qualitative method used to analyze the data. The research also started by collecting sources for creating and designing the digital storytelling on stories entitled “Aunt Polly” and ”Tom Fight” by Mark Twain. It started from inventorying the teaching and learning stuff such as syllabus, lesson plan, software, and the digital contents of the storytelling made. The researchers choose Audacity 3.5 Beta, and Windows Moviemaker 2.6, as the software for editing audio and creating video. The stories were made for enhancing the students listening skills either bottom-up or top down. The result of this research proves digital storytelling can be used in E-learning portal, such as Edmodo. The questionnaires result shows that digital storytelling is an interesting material, but need to be modified more in e-learning.  Article visualizations
