    Get PDF
India is home to over 84.4 million tribal people, or Adivasis, who represent some of the country's poorest communities, still reliant on traditional practices such as hunting, agriculture, and fishing, with distinct cultures, languages, and lifestyles. In West Bengal's Alipurduar District, over 80% of the population belongs to ethnic tribes. This study investigates the educational problems and needs of secondary-level tribal students in Alipurduar, focusing on gender differences. A survey of 60 students was conducted using the standardized "Educational Problems Questionnaire" and a self-developed "Educational Needs Questionnaire." The findings revealed that 51% of students face challenges in teaching methods, 54% in the social and educational environment, 56% in organizational and administrative issues, and 59% due to cultural and historical factors. Additionally, 48% of respondents expressed educational needs related to school education, 55% expressed societal support, and 44% expressed family involvement. These results underscore the importance of addressing the specific educational challenges faced by tribal students to promote equitable learning outcomes.  Article visualizations

This study sought to examine factors contributing to students’ active learning in physical education based on motivational and active learning variables. The study attracted the participation of 400 students at the People’s Police College II in Vietnam, using a quantitative data collection and analysis method. Results from the study indicate that, although emotion is the most critical one, factors related to students’ attention/cognition, self-determination, behavior and knowledge mastery played significant roles in motivating students’ motivation and engagement in active learning in physical education. The study’s findings suggest practical and pedagogical implications for both administrators and instructors in preparing appropriate physical education lessons to promote students’ active learning.  Article visualizations

PERCEPTIONS OF KARATE COACHES TOWARDS THE INCLUSION OF ATHLETES WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES IN TRAINING SESSIONS

    Get PDF
Para-karate is an adaptation of karate sport, including regulation changes so as to facilitate the participation of people with disabilities in karate competitions and to promote inclusion in training settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of karate coaches toward the inclusion of people with physical disabilities in common training sessions with athletes without disabilities and to record the coaches’ perceived level of self-efficacy. The importance of this study relates to the lack of corresponding researches regarding the attitudes of coaches in this particular sport. The sample consisted of 68 karate Greek coaches, whereas measurement tools used included the Hammond et al. (2014) Questionnaire measuring coaches’ attitudes towards inclusion and the ‘Physical Education Teacher Efficacy’ questionnaire by Biddle and Goudas (1997). Results showed that karate coaches’ perceptions toward inclusion of participants with physical disabilities and self-efficacy were influenced by education level and relative knowledge of adapted physical activity, external influence of significant others and previous coaching experience either with individuals with disabilities or overall experience as coaches, whereas no differences were noted in terms of coaches’ gender, age and local region, in a country that para-karate is still at the stage of early development. Based on the findings, recommendations were made for future researches using a larger sample of karate coaches.  Article visualizations

EMOTIONAL AND COGNITIVE INDICATORS IN DRAWINGS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: A PICTURE ANALYSIS STUDY

    Get PDF
Pictures contain important clues about how children perceive their own world, their environment and the events they experience, how they position themselves and how they externalize. This externalization event is used as a tool to express sadness, fear, anxiety, worry or the opposite feelings such as peace, happiness, joy, love, belonging, etc., especially in individuals with special needs who cannot or do not want to express themselves verbally. Pictures of individuals with special needs are also considered as an expression of the feelings of individuals with special needs and contain important details about personality development. These pictures written by students with special needs also provide important clues about the mental development and competence of students with special needs. This study was conducted with a total of 25 children with special needs who attend a special education school and whose age range varies between 4 and 12 years. The application with children with special needs, 10 of whom are girls and 15 of whom are boys, and included in this study, covered a period of 20 weeks, and the pictures collected from children with special needs were evaluated with the semiotic analysis method.  Article visualizations

This study aims to reveal the metaphor that Turkish university students have about the concept of "climate change". The research was carried out with the students at Necmettin Erbakan University, Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education (Geography 17, Biology 26, History 47) and Faculty of Health Sciences (Nutrition and Dietetics Department 74) in the spring term of 2021-2022 academic year. The research group consisted of a total of 164 students (124 female, 40 male). The data of the research were collected by qualitative research method and the research was organized in a phenomenological design. To determine the perceptions of the students about the concept of climate change, a semi-structured form containing the expression "climate change is like............because........." was prepared and the students were asked to complete the sentence given in the form. The data obtained were subjected to content analysis. Tables were created by calculating the number of metaphors in each category, how many students repeated the metaphor (frequency), and percentage values. When the findings of the research are evaluated, it is seen that a total of 96 valid metaphors were produced by the students. These metaphors were coded by considering their common features and 8 different conceptual categories were formed. Some of these categories are "Climate change leading to uncertainty", "Climate change as a symptom of danger/worry", "Climate change as the beginning of change", "Climate change as the work of insensitivity", "Climate change as a factor forcing to get used to the new situation", "Climate change with a disruptive effect", "Climate change as a cause of despair", "Climate change as a source of different thoughts", and the number of metaphor and frequencies of these categories are calculated and given in tables. When the findings obtained are analyzed, it is seen that the most recurrent metaphor for climate change includes concepts such as human (f=5), mental state (f=4), life (f=3), a sick body (f=3), disappointment (f=3), cancer (f=3), extinction (f=4), moving (f=4), disaster (f=3), end of the world (f=3), and chaos (f=2). When the metaphor produced by the students in this study are analyzed, it is seen that the perceptions of university students about the concept of climate change are diverse and rich.  Article visualizations

STUDENTS’ LEVELS OF AGENTIC ENGAGEMENT IN EXPERIMENTS AND ITS EFFECT ON SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY COMPETENCIES IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING INSTITUTIONS IN TANZANIA

    Get PDF
This study aimed to assess students’ levels of agentic engagement in experiments and its effect on scientific inquiry competencies (SICs) in technical education and training institutions in Tanzania. The study employed a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional survey design. A sample of 337 second- and third-year students studying the laboratory science and technology (LST) program from five technical education and training institutions was drawn using a proportionate stratified sampling technique. Data was collected through the use of the student agentic engagement survey questionnaires as well as the SICs test and analyzed through descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and variance), an independent sample t-test and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results revealed that LST students had a similar level of agentic engagement despite their differences in gender (male vs. female), grade levels (second vs. third years), and the nature of the institutions (private vs. public) and overall moderate levels of agentic engagement in experiments. The results further revealed that students’ agentic engagement in experiments had a significant positive effect on SICs when age, gender, nature of technical institutions and grade levels were controlled. Therefore, we concluded that LST students’ gender, grade levels and the nature of the institutions have no effect on students’ levels of agentic engagement. Notably, students demonstrated moderate levels of agentic engagement in scientific experiments, and agentic engagement found to be an important learning factor for promoting SICs. Thus, we recommended that while instructing scientific experiments in the laboratory, instructors be reminded to involve students as agents as often as possible to improve their SICs.  Article visualizations
