This study examined the usage of social networking sites and mental health issues of the BPE students in the University of Mindanao. In determining the association between the two variables (social networking sites and mental health), a survey questionnaire was used to collect data. The results of the two variables were revealed using mean and Pearson r analysis. Hence, this study revealed that the use of social networking sites, especially for education, informativeness, and socialization, as well as in mental health (digital care sentiment and acceptance), were acknowledged by the BPE students in the school. The socialization of the BPE students was determined as the most collected and aware in using social networking sites based on the result from the survey. It was followed by education, digital care sentiment, and acceptance. Furthermore, BPE students used social networking sites to connect with other people around the world to search and gather information for their academic tasks and to find online support groups to get relief from stress through sharing their stories or problems in life. Also, this study suggests that students minimize and should be responsible enough in using social networking sites to avoid mental health issues such as stress, depression, and anxiety. SDG Indicator: #3 (Good Health and Well-being) and #4 (Quality Education)  Article visualizations

THE EFFECTS OF TRADITIONAL AND MODERN PRE-MATCH WARM-UP PROTOCOLS ON JUMPING ABILITY IN FOOTBALL PLAYERS

    Get PDF
This study examined the effects of traditional and modern warm-up protocols on jumping performance in U-17 football players. Twenty male athletes (mean age: 16.25 ± 0.43 years) participated in a crossover design, completing both warm-up types on separate days. The traditional protocol included sport-specific dynamic drills, while the modern protocol used activation tools like foam rollers and resistance bands. After each 30-minute session and a 15-minute rest, jumping ability was measured via the Five-Repetition Jump Test (5JT). Results showed significantly higher average and best jump heights following the traditional warm-up (p < 0.001), suggesting superior neuromuscular activation. These findings indicate that conventional dynamic warm-ups are more effective in enhancing explosive performance. While modern protocols may aid in proprioception and injury prevention, they appear less beneficial for immediate power output. Coaches are encouraged to consider integrating both methods to optimize pre-match preparation.  Article visualizations

This study explores the effects of stress and lack of confidence on the speaking of English by Libyan EFL students at the Faculty of Languages in Surman. Semi-structured interviews with fifteen students were carried out in the present study to identify some linguistic problems that enhance speaking anxiety, such as vocabulary limitation, grammatical problems, and poor idea organization. Stress was found to affect memory, concentration, and fluency, which caused hesitation, rapid speech, and lack of clarity. Strategies for improvement in speaking English mentioned by students included regular practice in a conducive environment, language learning tools, and reflection. The results support Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis (1982), with its call to reduce anxiety and build confidence. Thus, the study affirms that psychological support, structured practice, and opportunities for interactive learning should go hand-in-hand to achieve success in performance in speaking English. The possible future direction of this research could be to investigate the long-term impacts of these strategies across different EFL contexts.  Article visualizations

EFFET DE L’UTILISATION DE LA DÉMARCHE DIDACTIQUE HYPOTHÉTICO-DÉDUCTIVE À TRAVERS UNE SITUATION-PROBLÈME SUR L’ACQUISITION DU PRINCIPE D’INERTIE : CAS DES APPRENANTS MAROCAINS DU TRONC COMMUN TECHNOLOGIQUE EN SCIENCES PHYSIQUES / EFFECT OF USING THE HYPOTHETICO-DEDUCTIVE DIDACTIC APPROACH THROUGH A PROBLEM SITUATION ON THE ACQUISITION OF THE PRINCIPLE OF INERTIA: CASE OF MOROCCAN LEARNERS OF THE COMMON TECHNOLOGICAL CORE IN PHYSICAL SCIENCES

The aim of this research is to study the effect of using a hypothetico-deductive didactic approach through a problem situation, on the acquisition of the principle of inertia by Moroccan learners in qualifying secondary education (case of the technological common core), in Physical Sciences. The study adopted a quasi-experimental methodology based on two groups of a sample of 74 learners. The inductive approach (classical approach) was introduced for the first group (control group), while the didactic hypothetico-deductive approach was tested for the second group (experimental group) through a problem situation involving the principle of inertia. Performance was assessed by means of a written test administered to the learners one week after completion of the experimental treatment. Data collected from both control and experimental groups were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. Inferential statistical analysis shows that teaching-learning using a hypothetico-deductive didactic approach through a problem situation has a positive effect on learners' academic performance compared with conventional teaching. In summary, the results of this study show that the hypothetico-deductive didactic approach is an innovative alternative to the inductive approach in the teaching of physical sciences in qualifying secondary schools, and that it is particularly effective in changing learners' initial conceptions. The hypothetico-deductive approach appears to be suitable for dealing with problem situations in the teaching-learning of the physical sciences, because of its advantages in the construction of learners' learning at the level of the Common Core of qualifying secondary education.  Article visualizations

IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PEDAGOGIES IN ONTARIO CANADA MATHEMATICS TEACHING, 1950 TO 2024

    Get PDF
This paper examines the implementation of a new curriculum and new pedagogies in mathematics education in Ontario between 1950 and 2024. This was a particularly important period for mathematics education, as reform mathematics based on a constructivist paradigm replaced the traditional transmission pedagogy of the behaviorist era. This radical departure from tradition clashed with the personal perceptual fields of many mathematics teachers, which impeded the successful implementation of newer, research-affirmed strategies. The paper examines historical pedagogical changes from 1950 to date and makes recommendations to improve the implementation of new pedagogies in mathematics education going forward.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
This study explores the lived experiences of dual-career (DC) athletes participating in the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), examining challenges, coping mechanisms and support systems. Despite extensive research on DC athletes, the unique circumstances surrounding smaller nations in Europe and the GSSE remain unexplored. This study aimed to fill this gap by examining how athletes from one of the smallest states in Europe manage their dual commitments under the unique pressures of the GSSE. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight (five female, three male) DC Maltese athletes who had participated in the GSSE. Six of the eight athletes interviewed were enrolled at the University of Malta (UOM), whereas the remaining two participated in online courses offered by foreign universities. The data was analysed using reflective thematic analysis. The study illustrates athletes' diverse strategies to manage their dual careers using familial and institutional support systems. The athletes' experiences highlight the need for improved frameworks and advocacy to facilitate dual careers. The study explored how DC athletes struggled to balance demanding academic schedules with rigorous training sessions. High expectations and demands often lead to significant lifestyle sacrifices, such as social isolation and mental stress. Furthermore, the research examined the dual-edged nature of competing on home soil. While local fans and family support motivated some athletes, it heightened expectations and anxiety for others. This study evaluates support systems and highlights the need for adaptable, integrated frameworks catering to athletic and academic schedules

ESTIMATING STUDY SAMPLE SIZE AND ASSESSING RELIABILITY OF PEAK FAT OXIDATION (PFO) DATA (G/MIN) COLLECTED DURING FATMAX TESTS, WITH CONSIDERATION FOR MENSTRUAL CYCLE IN ENDURANCE-TRAINED WOMEN

    Get PDF
Background: Sample size estimations are completed to determine the number of participants needed to highlight a relevant treatment effect [1]. This is crucial to ensure that the results are reliable. Estimating sample size can also assist researchers by informing the financial outlay for a project and minimising any over spend. Purpose: In this study, different methods to estimate sample size using PFO data were utilised. PFO data collected using the test re-test method was employed to estimate sample size. PFO results from previous research were also applied to estimate sample size [2,3,5,6]. Methods: Subsequently, a group of endurance-trained women (n=5) aged 36 (+/- 2.4 years) were recruited from the main study. Menstrual cycle (MC) length was established and within the MC, the mid-follicular phase (MF) (low hormone phase) was determined [4]. Identifying the MF phase of the MC would allow for FATMAX test re-test’s to be conducted when sex hormones were least likely to change or impose an effect on substrate utilisation. Tests were separated by 24 hours to allow participants to recover, to ensure hormonal change was minimal and to test the reliability of the results collected. Results: Results from previous research were statistically analysed individually and in group form to estimate sample size. When analysing PFO data from previous research, a mean sample estimation of 7 participants was suggested. Test re-test PFO results were assessed for reliability (ICC=0.82) before sample size estimations were conducted. Individual analysis from the test re-test method outlined a mean sample estimation of 14 participants, and group analysis from this method suggested a mean sample estimation of 14 participants. An overall mean sample from all estimations outlined a sample size of 12 participants.AcknowledgementThe above article was conducted in paralell as a relaibility study for the article titled “Investigsating the effects of hormonal fluctuations associated with menstrual cycle on peak fat oxidation during graded exercise” which was published in a previous edition of the European Journal of Physical Education and Sport Science, Volume 11, Issue 7. https://oapub.org/edu/index.php/ejep/article/view/5715  Article visualizations

PEER-MEDIATED INTERVENTION AS A STRATEGY FOR SCHOOL INCLUSION: IMPACTS ON THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS WITH ASD

    Get PDF
Peer-Mediated Intervention (PMI) and Classwide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) have proven to be effective strategies for the inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream primary education. This study examines the application of PMI and CWPT in the school context, highlighting their benefits, such as fostering the development of social skills and reducing isolation among students with ASD. Based on a literature review, various types of PMI approaches are discussed, including Proximity Intervention, Reinforcement Intervention, and Initiative Intervention. The findings suggest that PMI and CWPT are promising methodologies, particularly in naturalistic settings such as schools. However, in many emerging countries, the application of these methodologies remains limited, underscoring the need for further research and practical initiatives to explore their inclusive potential within educational contexts. Consequently, this study aims to contribute to the expansion of knowledge on PMI and CWPT and their applicability in countries where ASD remains a significant challenge for education systems.  Article visualizations
