In recent years, the global financial landscape has undergone a radical shift due to the adoption of digital technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). This digital transformation is reshaping how financial institutions operate, interacting with customers, and comply with regulatory requirements, particularly in the West and East. While developed economies have largely embraced these technologies to foster innovation and improve efficiency, many Muslim-majority countries face unique challenges in adopting digital transformation within the framework of Islamic finance, which emphasizes Shariah compliance, ethical banking, and financial inclusion. This dissertation provides a comparative analysis of digital transformation in Western and Eastern financial systems and explores its implications for Islamic financial institutions. The study examines how advanced digital technologies can enhance operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and customer experience in Islamic banking while remaining aligned with the principles of Islamic law. By evaluating successful digital initiatives in countries like the United States, China, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, this study highlights the opportunities and challenges Muslim-majority countries face in leveraging digital innovations. Key findings reveal that while digital transformation presents immense potential for improving financial inclusion, promoting sustainability, and reducing costs, it also raises concerns related to infrastructure readiness, regulatory harmonization, and skilled workforce development. This dissertation offers recommendations for Muslim-majority countries to successfully control these challenges and implement digital technologies in ways that respect Islamic ethical frameworks, contributing to a more inclusive and resilient financial system.

Evaluating Phase Angle in Malnutrition Risk Assessment Using Nutritional Screening Tools

    Get PDF
Background & aims: Malnutrition is a common complication in patients with breast cancer and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Phase angle (PhA), a parameter derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) may reflect nutritional status, but its value versus standard tools remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the utility of PhA in detecting malnutrition risk in breast cancer patients, compared with four validated screening tools. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 98 female patients with breast cancer. Nutritional status was assessed using the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form (PG-SGA SF), Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), and Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST). PhA was measured using single-frequency (50 kHz) BIA. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to determine the optimal PhA cut-off for malnutrition risk. Associations between PhA and malnutrition risk were examined univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: PhA was significantly associated with nutritional risk across all four screening tools. The optimal PhA cut-off for malnutrition risk based on NRS-2002 was 5.04 degrees (AUC = 0.83), with 73% sensitivity and 87% specificity. In crude logistic regression, a PhA <5.04 degrees significantly increased malnutrition risk across all screening tools: NRS-2002 (OR = 0.178, p < 0.001), MUST (OR = 0.338, p = 0.005), MST (OR = 0.308, p < 0.001), and PG-SGA SF (OR = 0.481, p = 0.037). These associations remained statistically significant after adjustment for age and fat mass index in three models (excluding PG-SGA SF). Conclusion: PhA, appears to be a practical and supportive indicator for identifying malnutrition risk in breast cancer patients, particularly when used alongside validated screening tools. The identified cut-off value (5.04 degrees) may serve as a useful threshold in clinical practice

Background: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) contribute substantially to total dietary energy intake and have been linked to various non-communicable diseases (NCDs). During industrial processing, UPFs are exposed to high heat, producing advanced glycation end products (AGEs). However, it remains unclear whether the consumption of AGE-rich UPFs influences AGE accumulation in skin collagen. This study aimed to examine the potential association between the frequency of UPF consumption and skin AGE levels among university students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included university students at a foundation university in Istanbul between 2022 and 2023. Data including sociodemographic characteristics, health information, anthropometric measurements, skin AGE levels, 24-hour recall, and UPF frequency were gathered via face-to-face interviews. Results: The total sample included 535 participants (63.6% women) with a mean age of 20.9 ± 3.7 years. The percentage of UPF consumption was 35.2 ± 28.6%, with no significant difference between genders. The main contributors to the UPF intake of the students are chocolate (17%), carbonated beverages (11.8%), and packaged biscuits (9.3%), which have a high daily consumption rate. The average skin AGE levels for the overall students was 1.48 AU, significantly higher in women (1.49 AU) than men (1.45) (p = 0.041). However, the association between UPF consumption percentage and AGE levels were not statistically significant (p = 0.168). Conclusions: The consumption of UPF is a prevalent phenomenon among university students. Although this highlights the importance of elucidating the relationship between UPF consumption and skin AGE accumulation to prevent potential risks, our findings did not demonstrate a significant association between the two variables. Nonetheless, the use of non-invasive skin AGE measurement (SAF) remains a valuable tool for assessing long-term AGE-related health risks. Further comprehensive studies are required to gain a deeper understanding of this subject

Çalışma, özellikle milliyetçilik ve inşa süreçleriyle Panslavizm'in ilişkisini değerlendirmiştir. Özellikle Kırım Savaşı (1853-1856), Panslavizm'in Balkanlardaki etkisinin sınırlandığı önemli bir dönüm noktası olmuştur. Araştırma, Panslavizm'in Slav halklarının kimlik inşasındaki rolüne ışık tutmuş ve Balkanlar'daki siyasi dönüşümler üzerindeki etkisini ortaya koymuştur. Analyzing the political and cultural consequences of Panslavism on the Slavic people, this paper investigates the origins and growth of this movement in the Balkans inside a historical framework. We examine closely the historical circumstances that led to Panslavism, the elements forming this ideology, Russia's policies in the Balkans, and their impact on the Slavic people. Particular focus is on the interaction among nationalism, Panslavism, and nation-building procedures. Using historical analysis approaches, the study uses qualitative research tools. The basis of the study includes theoretical frameworks like Benedict Anderson's (1936–2015) idea of "Imagined Communities," Eric Hobsbawm's (1917–2012) concept of "Invented Traditions," and Ernest Gellner's (1925–1995) theory of modernization. According to the results, Pan-Slavism first developed as a cultural movement but progressively turned into a political tool fit for Russia's strategic goals in the Balkans. Especially the Crimean War (1853–1856) was a major turning point that limited the impact of Panslavism in the area. This study emphasizes how Panslavism shapes political developments in the Balkans and helps Slavic people to create their identity. In conclusion, the study emphasises that Panslavism functioned both as an ideology fostering solidarity among Slavic peoples and as a policy tool shaping regional dynamics. By shedding light on the historical processes in the Balkans, this research provides new perspectives on the application of nationalism and nation-building theories across diverse contexts

The hybrid inorganic–organic material concept plays a bold role in multifunctional materials, combining different features on one platform. Once varying properties coexist without cancelling each other on one matrix, a new type of supermaterial can be formed. This concept showed that silver nanoparticles can be embedded together with inorganic and organic surface coatings and silicon quantum dots for symbiotic antibacterial character and UV-excited visible light fluorescent features. Additionally, fluorosilane material can be coupled with this prepolymeric structure to add the hydrophobic feature, showing water contact angles around 120°, providing self-cleaning features. Optical properties of the components and the final material were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy and PL analysis. Atomic investigations and structural variations were detected by XPS, SEM, and EDX atomic mapping methods, correcting the atomic entities inside the coating. FT-IR tracked surface features, and statistical analysis of the quantum dots and nanoparticles was conducted. Multifunctional final materials showed antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus, exhibiting self-cleaning features with high surface contact angles and visible light fluorescence due to the silicon quantum dot incorporation into the sol-gel-produced nanocomposite hybrid structure

    No full text
This study employed a multilevel, three-stage hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) approach to examine the factors influencing homework completion, time, and effort behaviors among middle and high school students. The student-level analysis encompassed a range of variables, including academic achievement, parental education, book ownership, age, homework motivation, emotions, parental involvement, personality, and attitudes. The class-level analysis incorporated homework quality, feedback quality, autonomy support, and homework frequency, representing teacher involvement. The school-level analysis included factors that reflected school-level differences and involved both middle and high school students. The study's findings indicated that homework completion and effort are predominantly influenced by individual-level factors, while homework time is significantly impacted by class-level variables. The study underscores the significance of academic achievement, homework motivation, and parental involvement in predicting homework completion and effort. Conversely, teacher feedback quality and autonomy support emerged as important factors affecting homework time and completion rates. This complex model offers a detailed understanding of the details that shape homework behaviors (completion, time, and effort), providing a foundation for designing targeted interventions to enhance student achievement

“In Search of Truth?” Integrating Religious Consultation into CBT to Address Ambivalence: A Case Study

    Get PDF
Ambivalence—defined as the simultaneous experience of conflicting emotions, attitudes, or beliefs toward a specific person, object, or situation—is a complex construct that plays a critical role in psychological processes such as decision-making, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combined with Motivational Interviewing (MI) has been shown to be effective in addressing ambivalence, there is limited research on religiously sensitive interventions for individuals with strong faith-based values. This case study introduces an integrative approach that incorporates consultation with a Muslim religious leader into the therapeutic process to address ambivalence regarding family responsibilities. The client, a young Muslim woman, experienced psychological distress due to uncertainty about her religious obligations to maintain her relationship with her father. Initial CBT sessions targeted anxiety and interpersonal difficulties. However, the inclusion of religious consultation played a crucial role in helping the client clarify her values and resolve her inner conflict. This intervention provided a faith-based framework for interpreting her obligations, reduced ruminative thinking, and fostered a more future-oriented perspective. Post-treatment assessments indicated notable reductions in anxiety and depression levels, and the client’s feedback highlighted the value of the religious consultation. These findings suggest that integrating religious consultation into psychotherapy may improve treatment outcomes for clients with strong religious commitments
