«Humos escuros y espesas nieblas» in the first attacks on the books of chivalry: Tirante el Blanco (1511) against the criticisms of Juan de Molina, Luis Vives and Jerónimo Sempere
Get PDFLa traducción castellana de la novela de Joanot Martorell, Tirante el Blanco (Valladolid, 1511), tuvo poca repercusión y, en consecuencia, una escasez de críticas en comparación con las realizadas a otros libros de caballerías durante el siglo XVI. Ahora bien, las existentes son muy interesantes y merecen un estudio pormenorizado. La novela es atacada por moralistas y humanistas a causa de su carencia de veracidad histórica (Juan de Molina), su influencia negativa sobre las jóvenes lectoras (Juan Luis Vives) o su alejamiento de la milicia edificante (Jerónimo Sempere). Este artículo examina la literalidad de esas críticas, los contextos de los autores y de las obras en que se formularon, y los círculos literarios en que se pudieron mover los lectores y críticos de Tirante el Blanco.The Spanish translation of Joanot Martorell’s book of chivalry, Tirante el Blanco (Valladolid, 1511) did not have a significant impact and, consequently, there is a scarcity of critical reviews of the work in comparison with the many other appreciations appearing on books of chivalry during the 16th century. Yet, these few literary attacks on Tirante el Blanco are very interesting and deserve a detailed study. The novel is criticized by moralists and humanists because of its lack of historical truth (Juan de Molina), its negative influence on young women readers (Juan Luis Vives) or its departure from the edifying militia (Jerónimo Sempere). This article examines the literality of these criticisms, the contexts of their authors and the works where they were included, as well as the literary circles in which those readers and critics of Tirante el Blanco moved

Spanish novels of chivalry in the digital forest: adventures never told or imagined
Get PDFEl estudio de los libros de caballerías ha estado durante siglos supeditado al Quijote, a una determinada interpretación del Quijote. En los últimos decenios del siglo XX, esta situación cambió, y se comenzó a realizar una crítica científica sobre el tema y se pusieron en marcha colecciones editoriales para dar a conocer sus textos. Los centenarios quijotescos y caballerescos de 2005 y 2008 permitieron hacer accesible al gran público muchas de estas investigaciones. Todo ello ha dado como resultado un resurgimiento de los estudios caballerescos en el siglo XXI, que tiene su reflejo en algunas herramientas digitales, que son pioneros. En todo caso, queda aún mucho por hacer para conseguir que tanta información caballeresca ahora disponible se convierta en conocimiento.The study of the books of chivalry has for centuries been subordinate to Don Quixote, to a certain interpretation of Don Quixote. In the last decades of the twentieth century, this situation changed, and a scientific critique on the subject began and editorial collections were set up to make their texts known. The quixotic and chivalric centenaries of 2005 and 2008 made many of these researches accessible to the general public. All this has resulted in a resurgence of chivalric studies in the 21st century, reflected in some pioneering digital tools. In any case, there is still much to be done to ensure that so much chivalric information now available becomes knowledge
