Uraria picta: A comprehensive review on evidences of utilization and strategies of conservation
Uraria picta (Jacq.) DC. (Prishnaparni) is one of the most important medicinal plants used in different traditional systems of medicines including the Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine. The major use of this plant was found in the most popular Ayurvedic formulation “Dashmula” and in several many other important Ayurvedic formulations. IUCN placed this woody herb in the least concern category as per version 3.1. It has extensive therapeutic uses and pharmacological activities. Though this plant is a source of many phytochemicals, the uses are uncertain because the raw plant parts or crude extracts are being used in all formulations. Therefore, extensive investigations are necessary to focus on the identification of these phytochemicals. It is an urgent need to give special attention to collecting various aspects and more efforts are required in all areas for utilization and conservation of this valuable medicinal herb. Herein, a compilation of all information with various aspects has been presented, including the authors published work on Uraria picta. This review pursues attention towards biological activity, phytochemical profile, utilization, propagation and conservation of Uraria picta
Response of morphological and biochemical traits of maize genotypes under waterlogging stress
Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most important cereal crops cultivated around the world. Waterlogging stress is a major production constraint of maize production in rain-fed agricultural systems. The main objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of continuous waterlogging on morphological and biochemical traits of maize genotypes at the vegetative stage. Ten maize genotypes were treated under no waterlogging (control) and continuous waterlogging of five centimeters depth for 10 days. The treatments were applied to the plants at their 45 days of age. Visual leaf injury scores from Leaf 4 (youngest leaf is the reference point) to Leaf 7 separated tolerant and susceptible genotypes. Waterlogging stress significantly reduced the total number of live leaves and chlorophyll content in leaf tissues in susceptible genotypes. The anatomical study revealed that tolerant maize genotypes produce a large number of aerenchyma cells under waterlogging stress compared to susceptible genotypes. The enzymatic activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and peroxidase (POD) exhibited a greater increase in tolerant genotypes than susceptible genotypes whereas the contents of reactive oxygen species (H2O2) greatly increased in susceptible genotypes than tolerant genotypes under waterlogging stress compared to control. Principal component 2 (PC2) indicated that increasing plant height in the genotypes BHM-14, BHM-13 and BHM-9 was associated with waterlogging tolerance. The findings of this experiment will add value to maize breeding to screen out maize genotypes for waterlogging stress tolerance
Synergistic effects of Ruta montana (Clus.) L. essential oil and antibiotics against some pathogenic bacteria
Antibiotic resistance has been called one of the world’s most pressing public health threats. The combination of essential oils with conventional antibiotics is one of the emerging approaches that could help prevent this problem. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate the impact of combination of Ruta montana essential oil with conventional antibiotics on some pathogenic bacteria. The essential oil isolated by steam-hydrodistillation was first analyzed using GC-MS then tested alone and in combination with five recommended antibiotics against three bacterial strains by the agar disc diffusion and broth micro-dilution methods. Out of forty-nine peaks, thirty-eight components were identified representing 98.17% of the total oil composition. The major components were 2-Undecanone (63.39%), 2-Nonanone (5.65%), 2-Acetoxytetradecane (4.94%), 2-Decanone (4.47%) and 2-Dodecanone (3.35%). While R. montana essential oil showed only weak antibacterial activity compared to the antibiotics tested alone, unexpectedly, the combination of RM essential oil with antibiotics remarkably increased the antibacterial activity of the antibiotics through synergistic effects in up to 70% of cases. These results suggest that combining antibiotics with essential oils, even those with low antibacterial activity, may be effective in overcoming problems caused by increasing bacterial resistance
Virtual screening of anticancer efficacy of phloretin against apoptotic targets – An In Silico molecular docking study
Recent advances demonstrate phytochemicals to be a potent anticancer therapeutic agent as various anti-cancer targets. This study depicts the anti-cancer potential against certain crucial common cancer targets leading to cancer cell proliferation and survival. The main objective of this study is to study the anti-cancer potential of phloretin against certain cancer targets. Ligand analysis was performed and Phloretin was chosen as the experimental ligand and Bcl-2, NF Kappa B, Carbonic anhydrase I (CA-1), Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS), Endothelial Nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), Caspase 3, and Caspase 9 proteins were chosen as targets. Induced fit molecular docking was performed by the use of Glide 6.5 software (Schrodinger - 2015). The docked poses were further evaluated based on binding energy, Conformational changes, and the amino acid residues involved in the protein-ligand interaction. The docking results depicted that phloretin showed notable binding affinity especially with carbonic anhydrase I, ENOS, and INOS. It also showcased significant potential against Caspase 3 and NF Kappa, thereby showing its potential as an effective anti-cancer therapeutics. During this study, the Inhibitory potential of Phloretin was studied as a result of this molecular docking study. This Insilico study revealed the binding efficiency of phloretin against the aforementioned targets. In vitro analysis is required for further validation of this data
A study on the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of Diarrhoea and Dysentery in Khag tehsil of District Budgam of Jammu and Kashmir
People are using medicinal plants to alleviate diseases since the time immemorial. The present paper enumerates a total of 25 medicinal plants belonging to 19 families used for the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery diseases in Khag tehsil of district Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Asteraceae was the dominant family. Leaves were found to be dominant plant used for the preparation of herbal remedies. It was found that in this era of modern medicine, people are still relied on traditional medicine to get their primary health care. It was also revealed medicinal plants are under serious threat and needs to be conserved as so as to enjoy this legacy in future too
GC–MS analysis of ethanolic leaf extract of Capparis divaricata Lam.
Planet earth is rich in plant-based medicine. Unfortunately, most of the medicinal plants are not in lime light for their optimal utilisation by the mankind mostly, because of unknown medicinally important phytochemicals present in them. Capparis divaricata Lam. is one of the medicinally important plants widely distributed in Arthagiri Hills of Chittoor Dist., Andhra Pradesh. The plant is ethnobotanically used for different ailments especially cancer. In the present study, Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of leaf ethanolic extract of Capparis divaricate is reported. Octasilaxone, Hexadecamethyl; Acetoxymethyl – Trimethyl: Octamethyl were identified as the major compounds. Further, these compounds may act as anti-cancerous agents by efficient pharmacological studies
Phytochemical analysis of Gloriosa superba L. Using GC-MS from five different ecotypes of Tamil Nadu State, India
Gloriosa superba L is an important medicinal plant and its seeds, tubers are used for medicine. To investigate the phyto-components of Gloriosa superba L collected from various habitats of Tamil Nadu state, India. In the present study, the phyto-components from the tubers of Gloriosa superba L cultivars from Sirumalai (GA1) Mulanoor (GA2), Thuraiyur (GA3), Konganapuram (GA4) and Vedaranyan (GA5) were extracted by ethanolic extract and the composition of chemicals and its concentration in the tubers were determined by Gas Chromatography – Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis.Among the phyto-components GA1 shows 15 phyto-components, GA2 shows 13 phyto-components, GA3 shows that 8 phyto-components, GA4 shows 14 phyto-components and GA5 shows 13 phyto-components. GA1, GA2, GA4 and GA5 ecotypes possessed higher phyto-components. Colchichine is an important alkaloid of Gloriosa superba L was found in GA2, GA3, GA4 and GA5 accessions in good concentration. The results reveals that the geographical origin and climate condition of a accession causes polymorphisms in the accumulation of phyto-components, its composition and morphological traits in Gloriosa Superba L originating from different ecotypes of Tamil Nadu state
Usnea dasaea, a further new addition to the Lichen Flora of Tamil Nadu State, India
The present study addresses the addition of one new fruticose lichen species for the first time to the state of Tamil Nadu in Western Ghats, India. Usnea dasaea Stirt. is a new occurrence in Tamil Nadu. Descriptions of identification keys and distributions of such new species in south India provide useful information for identification. The new species addition of such lichen was identified and deposited at lichen herbaria, National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India and Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India for further studies
Antifungal activity of Terminalia chebula fruit extracts
The present study was aimed to investigate the anticandidal and antifungal potential of dried fruit extracts of Terminalia chebula against Candida albicans, C. tropicalis C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, and Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, Microsporum gypseum. Phytochemical analysis of methanol extracts of T. chebula dried fruits showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, terpenoids and steroids. Among the tested four extracts, the methanol extracts of T. chebula dried fruits exhibited the highest antifungal activity and their inhibition zone was ranged between 7.5 to 19.5mm. MIC and MFC values were between 62.5-250μg/ml and 250-500μg/ml respectively. Zone of inhibition (19.5 mm), MIC (62.5µg/ml) and MFC (125µg/ml) values observed in methanolic extracts of T. chebula dried fruits against A. fumigates and T. mentagrophytes. Our findings proved that methanolic extracts of T. chebula dried fruits were possessed substantial anticandidal and antifungal properties
A comprehensive review of ethnobotanical plants used by the people of Pir Panjal Range in (Jammu Division) Union Territory Himalaya of Jammu and Kashmir- India
The current paper provides a taxonomic inventory of the medicinal plant species collected by the author during the last one decade from Pir Panjal range in (Jammu Division) Himalaya of Union territory Jammu & Kashmir- India. The inventory records a total no of 76 medicinal species belonging to 45 families of the total taxa were recorded for the medicinal Purposes. The inventory is expected to provide baseline scientific data for further studies on plant diversity in Jammu division and can be used to facilitate the long-term conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plant resources in the Himalaya region, and among all the families Cucurbitaceae and Euphorbiaceae were found to be most dominant families in term of the species in the areas with 06 species, followed by Polygonaceae and Rosaceae
