Assessment of husbandry practice and egg production performance of indigenous chickens in urban and peri urban area of Guder town, Oromia Region, Ethiopia
The study was undertaken from May up to July 2020 in Guder town of Oromia regional state, Ethiopia. The aim of the study was to explore husbandry practices and egg production performance of indigenous chicken in the study area. A cross-sectional systematic random survey of 40 households was undertaken by using semi-structured and pre tested questionnaire. Information on management practices, production systems, egg production performances and constraints of indigenous chicken kept in Guder town was generated by semi-structured questionnaire. The primary data collected from house hold survey was processed and analyzed by using a statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20.0 software. Descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean, ranking, standard deviation, and cross tabulation were used to analyze the data quantitatively. Data gathered through key informant interviews, focus group discussion and personal observation was analyzed qualitatively to strengthen data obtained from the household survey. Due to its small space and lower capital requirement sample household’s ranked chicken as the first important animals kept in the study area. The main purposes of keeping indigenous chicken in the study area were for home consumption followed by generation of income. The most important feed resources of indigenous chicken kept in the study area were feed obtained from scavenging, house hold wastes, the market left over, and industrial by products. Majority of the households accommodated their indigenous chicken in a separate house constructed for the confinement of the chicken. The higher mortality rate of indigenous chicken in the study area was caused by disease and predator. The most commonly happening and economically important disease in the study area was Newcastle. The commonly observed predators in the study area were cat and dog. Health and feed problems were the first and the second constraint of indigenous chicken production in the study area respectively. Therefore area based development involvement could help to increase the productivity of indigenous chicken and thereby improve the income of small holders
Response of giant foxtail and wild proso millet to artificial light quality alteration
Light is an essential requirement for proper plant growth and development. Growth chamber experiments were conducted to determine whether artificial alteration of light quality (reducing the red to far-red ratio-R:FR) differentially affected the growth and development of giant foxtail and wild proso millet, two troublesome annual grass weeds in the United States. Growth phenotypes of both weeds were examined under two R:FR regimes (0.28-reduced R:FR and 1.12-unaltered R:FR) in the absence of competition (control conditions) and under intraspecific and interspecific competition. The reduced R:FR simulated shaded (below-canopy) R:FR conditions in the field while the unaltered R:FR treatment simulated direct sunlight (above-canopy) conditions. Averaged across weed species, reducing the R:FR increased plant height, but reduced tiller production and above-ground biomass under no plant competition (P<0.05). In the presence of competition, reducing the R:FR increased plant height and internode length but reduced the number of tillers and leaf area across weed species. No phenotypic differences were observed for weeds tested under intraspecific or interspecific competition. Our study has shown that the response of both weeds to artificial R:FR alteration is similar to that observed under shaded field conditions. Therefore, by replacing bordering plants with a crop, controlled experiments can be used to test the effect of crop canopies on weed suppression when selecting cultivars to be planted in areas where certain weed species are prevalent, minimizing weed-related yield losses
Phytochemical analysis of Ficus thonningii: A qualitative study
This study assessed the phytochemical contents of the aqueous, ethanol, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the fruit, leaves, root, and stem of F. thonningii at selected concentrations. The contents of alkaloids, tannins, saponins, volatile oils, phenols and flavonoids were determined qualitatively in these extracts at selected concentrations. The results obtained showed that alkaloids are present in the leaves, roots and stem barks of Ficus thonningii. The volatile oil is found in the stem bark, root bark, and fruit (aqueous only) of the plant. Saponin is found to be concentrated in all the extracts of the plant. Phenol is found to be concentrated in the fruit of the plant. Its presence is also confirmed in the leaves (at few concentrations) and present in trace amount in the stem bark. Tannin is found in the fruit, root bark and leaves of Ficus thonningii. Flavonoids are found in all the parts of Ficus thonningii. The variety of phytochemicals confirmed in the fruit, leaves, stem, and root barks of Ficus thonningii show that the plant is pharmacologically active
Swim test for joint angles dispersion analysis during hind limb motor function assessment in SCI models
In the most of functional studies, various stress tests are used to assess functional improvement following spinal cord injury in animal models. However, available methods of motor function evaluation are not always accurate and unbiased. The main objective of the study was to create a new method of motor activity assessment in minor animal models of spinal cord injury. This method should provide an objective and accurate evaluation of limb motor function in models having severe neurological disorders following contusion spinal cord injury. The swimming test was used as the key behavioral test. To assess the motor function of swimming animals’ hind limbs, we measured angles of hind limbs movements adjusted to the motion direction axis. Then we calculated individual angles dispersion for each joint and limb using the parameters of angles sample dispersion and amplitude-depending dispersion. The current study included two groups of Sprague-Dawley rats: control group and a group of animals having moderate thoracic spinal cord contusion injury. Control animals demonstrated stable dispersion indicators for 6 weeks of follow-up. In the experimental group, a tendency to the improvement of motor function in hind limbs between 1 and 3 weeks was revealed followed by stabilization and preservation of both indicators between 3 and 6 weeks. Provided method based on the measurement of joint angles adjusted to the movement direction axis followed by calculation of indicators of variance of a random variable and amplitude-depending variance can be an effective and objective alternative for motor function evaluation
Diversity analysis and structural modeling for some traits in wheat genotypes
This investigation was carried out during 2018/2019 season in three locations Homs, Al-Swaida and Tartous belongs to the General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research in Syria, using 17 Italian, Syrian and Ethiopian wheat genotypes to estimate the potential diversity by principle component and cluster analysis, and to study the structural modeling between grain yield and other traits to define best traits as predictors and selection indexes of grain yield, and to determine the superior genotypes in grain yield. Results indicated a remarkable variation of 74% due only to the first four principle components with Eigen value > 1. PC Biplot showed that Tartous was the best location, and the genotype SD09 was superior in grain yield per plant followed by SH5 and IP39. Structural modeling results revealed that the total and fertile tillers number per plant were the best predictors for grain yield per plant, while fertile tillers per plant with grain weight per spike could be used as selection indexes of wheat grain yield because they had positive strong direct effect on grain yield per plant. Cluster analysis results confirmed the need to assess more various genotypes from different origins
Regeneration potential of different explants during micropropagation of neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss.)
Azadirachta indica A. Juss., (Neem), a prodigious multipurpose tree, has immense potential to benefit mankind and to protect the environment. In order to investigate the effects of three different explants for its regeneration potential, de embryonated cotyledon, immature zygotic embryo and nodal segments from a 30 year old neem plus tree were used. Half strength MS medium with benzyl amino purine (3 mg/L) and naphthalene acetic acid (0.5 mg/L) and casein hydrolysate (1 g/L) was effective in shoot bud sprouting from both nodes and cotyledons. Half strength MS medium fortified with TDZ (0.2 mg/L) was effective for induction of somatic embryogenesis from zygotic embryos. Shoot buds initiated from the cotyledons produced a maximum number of shoots per explants (4.33) which on further sub culturing induced maximum multiple shoots (15) on half strength MS medium fortified with BAP (1.5 mg/L), NAA (0.5 mg/L) and CH (400 g /L) and the nodal explants induced only 4-5 axillary shoots on further sub culturing. Even though immature zygotic embryos produced more number of somatic embryos per explant (24.97) within a short time (30-45 days), the plantlet conversion was poor (25.52 %). In vitro rooting was observed in half strength MS medium supplemented with IBA (2 mg/L). The regeneration potential of de embryonated cotyledons through a simple regeneration system may be beneficial for efficient mass propagation of selected plus trees of neem
Phytochemical profiling of petroleum ether and chloroform extracts of Curcuma caesia rhizome by GC-MS and comparing their bioactivities: GCMS profiling and bioactivities of Curcuma caesia rhizome
The objective of this study was to characterise the putative phytochemical constituents from petroleum ether (CC-P) and chloroform (CC-C) extracts of Curcuma. caesia rhizome by GC-MS analysis and to compare their bioactivities. GC-MS analysis facilitated the documentation of a total of 16 and 20 volatile constituents in CC-P and CC-C extracts respectively. Of these the major constituents present in CC-P were cycloisolongifolence, 8, 9-dehydro-9 formyl- (19.64%), 4-oxo- β-isodamascol (16.05%), 6,10-dimethyl-3- (1-methylethyl) -6-cyclodecene-1,4-dione (13.80%), 2H-cyclohepta[b]furan-2-one,6-[1-(acetyloxy) -3-oxobutyl]- 3,3a,4,7,8,8a- hexahydro-7-methyl- 3-methylene- (9.08%), tricycle [5.1.0.0(2,4)] oct-5-ene-5-propanoic acid,3,3,8.8-tetramethyl- (6.39%), 2(3H)-benzofuranone,6-ethenylhexahydro-3,6-dimethyl-7-(1- methyl ethenyl)-, [3S-(3α,3aα,6α,7β,7aβ) (4.18%) and 7a-isopropenyl-4,5-dimethy loctahydroindene-4-carboxylic acid (4.01%). Similarly, the major constituents present in CC-C were cycloisolongifolence,8,9- dehydro-9-formyl-(15.69%), 6,10-dimethyl-3-(1-methylethyl)-6-cyclodecene-1, 4-dione (13.38%), 2H-cyclohepta [b]furan-2-one,6-[1- (acetyloxy)-3-oxobutyl] -3,3a,4,7,8,8a- hexa hydro -7-methyl - 3-methylene- (4.55%), tricycle [5.1.0.0(2,4)] oct-5-ene-5- propanoic acid,3,3,8.8-tetramethyl- (7.50%), 2(3H)-benzofuranone, 6-ethenylhexahydro-3,6-dimethyl-7-(1-methylethenyl)-,[3S- (3α,3aα,6α,7β,7aβ) (6.15%), 7a-isopropenyl-4,5-dimethyl octahydroindene-4-carboxylic acid (6.43%) and 2-(4a,8- Dimethyl-6- oxo-1,2,3,4-4a,5,6,8a-octahydro-naphthalen-2-yl) propionaldehyde (6.57%). The extracts, CC-P and CC-C exhibited almost similar antibacterial and antifungal potentials but differed with respect to antioxidant activity. The IC50 values of CC-P and CC-C extracts for DPPH scavenging were 0.68±0.02 mg ml-1 and 0.13±0.01 mg ml-1 respectively. Together, above results provide an important basis for the isolation of bioactive compounds from C. caesia rhizome extract and their use as traditional medicine
Smart detection and prevention procedure for DoS attack in MANET
A self-organized wireless communication short-lived network containing collection of mobile nodes is mobile ad hoc network (MANET). The mobile nodes communicate with each other by wireless radio links without the use of any pre-established fixed communication network infrastructure or centralized administration, such as base stations or access points, and with no human intervention. In addition, this network has potential applications in conference, disaster relief, and battlefield scenario, and have received important attention in current years. There is some security concern that increases fear of attacks on the mobile ad-hoc network. The mobility of the NODE in a MANET poses many security problems and vulnerable to different types of security attacks than conventional wired and wireless networks. The causes of these issues are due to their open medium, dynamic network topology, absence of central administration, distributed cooperation, constrained capability, and lack of clear line of defense. Without proper security, mobile hosts are easily captured, compromised, and attacked by malicious nodes. Malicious nodes behavior may deliberately disrupt the network so that the whole network will be suffering from packet losses. One of the major concerns in mobile ad-hoc networks is a traffic DoS attack in which the traffic is choked by the malicious node which denied network services for the user. Mobile ad-hoc networks must have a safe path for transmission and correspondence which is a serious testing and indispensable issue. So as to provide secure communication and transmission, the scientist worked explicitly on the security issues in versatile impromptu organizations and many secure directing conventions and security measures within the networks were proposed. The goal of the work is to study DoS attacks and how it can be detected in the network. Existing methodologies for finding a malicious node that causes traffic jamming is based on node’s retains value. The proposed approach finds a malicious node using reliability value determined by the broadcast reliability packet (RL Packet). In this approach at the initial level, every node has zero reliability value, specific time slice, and transmission starts with a packet termed as reliability packet, node who responded properly in specific time, increases its reliability value and those nodes who do not respond in a specific time decreases their reliability value and if it goes to less than zero then announced that it’s a malicious node. Reliability approach makes service availability and retransmission time
Influence of plant growth regulators on fatty acid composition of Simarouba glauca DC.
Simarouba glauca is a medicinally important oil yielding plant. It is a rainfed wasteland evergreen edible oil tree. Presowing soaked seeds of Simarouba glauca in various Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) are analyzed to estimate their fatty acid composition. The fatty acids extraction was done using petroleum ether and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were analyzed by Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). Due to the application of growth regulators stearic acid, lingoceric acid and linolenic acid enhances noticeably, while, total saturated fatty acids are augmented due to cysteine, Salicylic Acid (SA) and methionine treatments and monosaturated fatty acids elevated due to the application of 6-Benzylaminopurine (6-BA) whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids enhanced in response to Gibberellic Acid (GA) and Chlormequat chloride (CCC). The PGR induced changes in fatty acid composition predominantly in polyunsaturated fatty acids may certainly recover the oil quality of S. glauca seeds
In-silico molecular docking analysis of some plant derived molecules for anti-inflammatory inhibitory activity
Herbs are essential resources for drug discovery. However, numerous challenges stand in front of the scientific community to discover novel drugs from herbs. To explore the validation behind the precious knowledge of traditional medicine, we focused on achieving virtual screening to detect the potential medicines from the herbs. Five bioactive compounds from known anti-inflammatory medicinal plants were examined through molecular docking against cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS), using AutoDock 4.2. The docking of selected ligands with COX-2 showed the binding energy varying from -6.15 Kcal/mol to ‑11.24 Kcal/mol. The docking energies of identified ligands with iNOS were generated ranges from -3.85kcal/mol to -6.99 kcal/mol. Among the tested ligands, it was noted that 6 urs-12-en-24-oic acid showed the best binding energy than other compounds with the lowest binding energy and highest binding affinity with both anti-inflammatory target proteins COX-2 and iNOS. The in silico study validates the potential phytochemical compound of the medicinal herb that contribute to anti-inflammatory activity with low toxicity and minimal side effects
