A Study on the Cumulative Advantages and Disadvantage of Academic Achievement Gaps Using a Growth Curve Model : Realization and Measurement
The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of cumulative advantage
in Japanese society by analyzing academic achievement from a follow-up
survey of elementary and junior high school students.
In Japan, analysis with panel data has revealed aspects of academic
achievement gaps. However, the findings are inconsistent because (1) the
measurement methods of the variables, (2) the grades analyzed, (3) the
regions surveyed, and (4) the analysis methods are not the same. Hence, it
is not possible to make rigorous comparisons as to whether the
achievement gap “widens” or “remains” as grades increase. In addition,
scientific research needs to be constantly validated through panel studies.
In recent years, the value of re-examination studies, in which another thirdparty researcher verifies the results of a study that has already been
published for confirmation, has begun to be reevaluated. Therefore, there is
a need to revisit the findings on academic achievement gaps by analyzing
new panel data.
The data used in this paper are academic achievement panel data
obtained from a survey conducted on elementary and junior high schools in
a regional core city (population of about 350,000). The analysis targets
fourth- through eighth-grade students in the 2009 birth cohort. The
academic achievement data is from the Norm Referenced Test (NRT), and
the students ʻSocio-economic Status (SES) is the parentsʼ educational
background and annual household income obtained from a questionnaire survey for parents. A growth curve model was used as the analytical
method.
The findings are as follows. (1) The SES variable is significant and
positive for the intercept of the academic achievement score, and the
academic achievement gap is observed at the 4 th grade. (2) The SES
variable is significant and positive to the slope for Japanese and science,
and the achievement gap widens for Japanese and science. (3) In math and
social studies scores, the SES variables were not significant to their slopes.
Hence, the academic achievement gap does not change with age in math
and social studies. What these analyses indicate is that changes in the
academic achievement gap “vary from subject to subject.”departmental bulletin pape
The Role of “6th Industrialization” in Regional Brand Formation and Agricultural Promotion : Focusing on Wineries in the Matsumoto Highlands Agricultural Cooperative
In recent years, the environment surrounding Japan’s agriculture and
forestry industry has been severely affected by a shortage of bearers, an
aging population, and the deterioration of farmland and forest land, leaving
not only those involved in agriculture and forestry but also many people
involved in “food” feeling uncertain about the future.
Under these circumstances, it is considered necessary to increase the
income of producers by adding value to agricultural products. In response
to this current state of agriculture, 6th industrialization is expected to
create rural community industries that promote multifaceted community
revitalization.
From this perspective, this paper covers the case of 6th industrialization
in Matsumoto Highland Agricultural Cooperative in Nagano Prefecture.
Focusing particularly on the winery, this report clarifies the development
process of 6th industrialization, specific efforts, and challenges faced by the
case.
The paper clarifies, in particular, the role of 6th industrialization in the
promotion of agricultural production, as well as in the formation of regional
brands.departmental bulletin pape
Self-Envisagement improves Self-Esteem : Lessons Learned from Online vs. Face-to-Face Classes
The coronavirus pandemic has forced most university classes to change
from face-to-face to online. The author had reported that Job-hunting
Support classes (face-to-face) improved students’ self-esteem in the previous
article.
So, do we observe the same effects in online-type classes? This paper
compares online and face-to-face classes and examines changes in selfesteem
and cognitive distortions as measured by both the Rosenberg Self-
Esteem Scale and the Barnes cognitive distortion Scale.
The results indicate that there are distinctive changes in the two
measures between the two type classes. The results are also discussed in
terms of the relationship between self-esteem and self-development.departmental bulletin pape
Current Status and Issues of Japanese Agricultural, Forestry, Fishery and Food Products Export
Currently, Japan’s agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry is facing a
difficult situation due to a decline in total agricultural output, the number of
farmers and the amount of arable land sold, and the aging of the farming
population. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
has proposed the expansion of exports of Japanese agricultural, forestry,
and fishery products as an important means to strengthen the agriculture,
forestry, and fishery industries and to increase sales of Japanese food and
food products in overseas markets.
Against this backdrop, in the “Revitalization of Japan Strategy” approved
by the Cabinet in June 2013, the then Abe Cabinet formulated a strategy to
increase the value of exports of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products
and foods to 1 trillion yen by 2020 in order to promote rural development,
agricultural and forestry production, and increase farm income. This goal
was achieved one year later, due in part to subsequent promotional
measures by the Japanese government and various prefectures.
Based on the achievement of this target, in 2020, the “Strategy for
Expanding Exports of Agricultural, Forestry, Fishery, and Food Products”
policy was presented, which further targets an annual export value of 5
trillion yen by 2030. Since this is a very high goal, it remains to be seen
what concrete measures will be implemented by the Ministry of
Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, prefectural governments, the
Japanese government, agricultural cooperatives, food-related companies,
and individual agricultural enterprises to promote the export of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and foods.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the current status and challenges
of Japan’s exports of agricultural, forestry, fisheries, and food products in
order to clarify how to achieve the target of 5 trillion yen in exports of
agricultural, forestry, fisheries, and food products in 2030 and to develop
regional and farm household economies.departmental bulletin pape
Expansion of Exports and Development of Foreign Trading Companies in Japan during the Interwar Period
The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively clarify the status of foreign
trading companies in Japan during the interwar period. In the 1930s,
Japanese exports increased rapidly, and their destinations expanded to all
over the world. This paper first examines the entry status, export value,
and export destination regions of foreign trading companies during the
interwar period. Through these, we will analyze the market blocs
possessed by foreign merchants and clarify the relationship between their
activities and the expansion of their export destinations.
The following points were identified in this paper. First, the export value
and sales channels of foreign merchants in Kobe in the 1920s and 1930s
were clarified. In the 1920s, Chinese trading companies focused on East
and Southeast Asia, while Indian trading companies focused on Southeast
and South Asia. In the 1930s, Chinese companies were not expanding their
sales channels, but Indian were developing export channels to the African
market, and European were becoming the global exporters as the ratio of
exports to Europe declined. As a result, European trading firms saw an
increase in their sales channels as a leader in exports to Europe worldwide.
Thus, not only Asian foreign trading companies, but also European trading
companies were important in Japanʼs exports as global export leaders
during the interwar period. Furthermore, in the 1930s, exporting trading
companies from new markets such as West Asia, Central and South
America, and Africa were established one after another. These export
trading companies were based on exports to their own regions. Thus, it
can be said that foreign trading companies also played a part in global
exports, as the market zone formed in the 1920 s expanded in the 1930 sdepartmental bulletin pape
