The Role of Rural Tourism in Urban-Rural Interaction : A Case Study of Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Get PDFThis study focuses on rural tourism as one way to combine the needs of
urban and rural residents, and to help urban and rural residents reaffirm
and deepen their understanding of each other’s local attractions.
Since 2016, the central and local governments have introduced a number
of support policies for rural tourism, and large amounts of capital have
flowed into rural areas; the February 2017 Central No.1 letter, as well as
the May 2017 notification from China’s Ministry of Finance, have promoted
initiatives for urban-rural exchange mediated by the “Rural Composite
Body”.
This paper, therefore, takes up the case of the Meilinongyeyuan Rural
Composite in Nanning, Guangxi, to examine the social and economic
functions of rural tourism, which have not been fully clarified until now.
Specifically, based on the results of a survey on the current status and
issues of rural tourism in Nanning, we hope to clarify the social and
economic roles of rural and urban tourism, forms of exchange, and spillover
effects on the region, as well as to assist in research on the development of

Entity Formation and Inter-Organizational Topology of a Community Business : A Case Study of Tsurugaoka District, Miyama Town, Nantan City
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to elucidate the characteristics and
management status of actors that provide goods and services through
community businesses and clarify how such businesses enhance the
sustainability of communities in mountainous areas. This case analysis
considers the village revitalization of Miyama-cho (now Nantan-shi), Kyoto
Prefecture. Many studies have focused on this topic; however, the current
study highlights a fresh perspective in this field. . Earlier research
emphasizes business objectives rather than profitability in the context of
replacement of welfare and administrative services by community
businesses. In these studies, we cannot find any perspective on the type of
efforts and collaboration made by the main body of community businesses
to raise the stage from Kouryu-jinkou (people who visit the area as tourists
and are not permanent residents) to Teiju-jinkou (permanent residents) to
secure the main body of regional revitalization. Therefore, in this study,
which is based on the theory by Granovetter, we focus on the ties involved
in the formation of the entity of a community business. We identified and
analyzed the following three problems: how the entity was established, who
the target audience for the service was, and what kind of network was
built between the entities of the community business. Based on the results
of our analysis on each entity’s business content and decision-making
process, we categorized the nature of entities’ social network and the scope and target of their activities. In this manner, we clarified the path through
which the community business contributes to the community’s
sustainability in the mountainous area. The typification carried out in this
study makes it possible to analyze the path through which community
groups with strong ties create relationships with Kankei-jinkou (an outsider
with a persistent interest and involvement in a particular area). This
typification remains unclarified by conventional community business
research. In other words, a regional organization that responds to a
community’s needs with a network of strong ties does not change its
nature. In this study, we actualized the existence of a system that created
connections between people. The study results do not deny the importance
of the rural maintenance system, which has been handed down through
generations, on the grounds that it is closed and feudal but reevaluate its
significance as an indispensable regional player. By positioning community
businesses as actors that enhance the sustainability of the entire system,
