What are uninterpretable features (uFs, or morpho-syntactic features such as ϕ and case)?
What exactly is Agree? Where do they originate from? Two assumptions are utilized: the
converse of the referentialist doctrine for the computational procedures of human natural
language (CHL) (i.e., words do not refer; axiom one) and the error minimization hypothesis
(EMH) for nature, which contains EMH for CHL, resulting in a valuation-free Agree model.
The axiom one and EMH state that (a) both the conceptual-intentional system (CI) and
sensory-motor system (SM) are disconnected in the human brain, (b) as a result, the
human brain must connect two systems that are fundamentally different, namely, geometrybuilding narrow syntax (NS) and sound-wave-computing SM, and (c) uFs are errors that
emerge in our brain as a result of the mutated disconnection. CHL (NS) is a system that
strives to offset errors in order to approach a perfect computational system, deducing
the strong minimalist thesis (SMT). The valuation-free Agree model is based on the
grammatical feature hypothesis (consequent upon axiom one) and the error-minimization
algorithm (EMA) (a subset of EMH). The grammatical feature hypothesis holds that all
morpho-syntactic features are NS-computable and SM/CI-uncomputable. The valuation-free
Agree model is supported by evidence from languages such as English, French, Hindi, and
Japanese, being as it is that there are two types of EMA: error elimination under matching
(EMA ①) and error neutralization (EMA ②). EMA ① eliminates probe-goal uF (case and
ϕ) under the matching, where two Agree types exist in terms of feature inheritance timing.
EMA ② neutralizes uF: it eliminates ϕ as a reflex of case elimination, forcing the predicate
ϕ to default. The control issue (i.e., null case elimination of infinitive) and the seeming lack
of ϕ-agree in east Asian languages are incorporated in EMA ②departmental bulletin pape
Toward a More Inclusive Society: Interviews with Social Welfare District-Council Leaders in Miyakonojo
Community development faced difficulties to practice during the COVID-19 Pandemic
in Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. Semi-structured interviews were
conducted with three leaders of the social welfare district-councils, and these interview
subjects were chosen because they have won substantial acclaim in the field of community
development by contributing to the creation of an inclusive society in Miyakonojo. This
study found that firstly, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, various activities and exchanges
took place in the community. The district-council leaders tried hard to conduct possible
activities, contemplating how such activities could be practiced in the pandemic. Their
decisions were made with the city council of social welfare. Secondly, while struggling to
conduct activities, the leaders faced two major difficulties. One was the difficulty with the
organizations such as the City Council of Social Welfare, the Miyakonojo City, and schools.
The other difficulty was what the district itself had. Finally, challenges towards the future
were identified. It is necessary for each social worker to develop diverse professional
experiences to support a variety of problems in the community. It is also inevitable for
the city council as an organization to build the method to support each social worker
resourcefully. In order to clarify practical methods to deal with the above challenges,
further research should be conducted with respect to the younger workers of the council
of social welfare in the citydepartmental bulletin pape
Collaborative Online International Learning and Challenges: Project-Based Learning for Canadian and Japanese Students
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the demand for distance education worldwide. In
higher education, industry-academia-government collaborations have been implemented
in Project Based Learning (PBL) courses with Collaborative Online International
Learning (COIL) using cross-cultural education. However, few studies have explored the
effectiveness of these courses. A text mining analysis was conducted on student learning
outcomes in a global career course for 30 Canadian and Japanese university students from
June to August 2021. The students collaborated to propose business solutions to Canadian
and Japanese organizations. Their reflection reports were analyzed using KH Coder. The
results demonstrated the commonalities between Canadian and Japanese students which
included their schedule managements and business framework usages with their group
members for problem solutions. The students were also aware of the possibilities to study
abroad. Both student groups implemented industry-academia-government collaborations
in PBL courses with COIL, understood differences in cultures and international business,
and proposed some problem solutions using business frameworks. The Canadian students
tended to indicate the company, organization, university, and each of their characteristics
more clearly in their native language of English, while Japanese students had to struggle
with the challenge of using English as their second language. Nevertheless, with
experience, the Japanese students became more aware of English communication methods
and future careers. Oral presentations for reflections and discussions about their future
careers were effective opportunities for students to deepen their learning and to better
understand international business.departmental bulletin pape
Functions and Challenges of Agricultural Direct Sales Stores in Urban Areas ー A Case Study of JA Osaka Nakakawachiʼs Direct Sales of Agricultural Productsー
As a form of “local production for local consumption,” agricultural direct
sales stands play a certain role in the development of local agriculture and
economic revitalization, but the aging of shippers, declining shipping
volumes, product assortment, and the multifaceted functions of direct sales
stands are becoming issues.
In particular, another issue is how to ensure the original strength of
direct sales centers, such as “direct production of local agricultural
products,” while at the same time placing emphasis on product assortment.
In urban areas, local residents are the main purchasers of direct sales
stands, and competition among direct sales stands and with general
retailers such as food supermarkets is intensifying.
Based on these previous studies, this paper analyzes a case study
conducted in the jurisdiction of Osaka Nakakawachi Agricultural
Cooperative Association (hereinafter referred to as “JA Osaka
Nakakawachi”)in Osaka Prefecture, with the aim of clarifying the actual
conditions and challenges of direct sales outlets located in urban areas.
Specific issues to be discussed in the analysis are as follows.
(1)Clarify how direct sales stands are managed and their management
systems, etc.
(2)Identify farmers and direct sales stands.
(3)To clarify the benefits of direct sales to farmers and direct sales
center management organizations, such as securing a sales channel for
agricultural products. Furthermore, we will clarify what kind of appeal
direct sales stands have for local consumers in comparison with
supermarkets and other retail outletsdepartmental bulletin pape
Cultural History of Health and Sanitation-related Activities in Japan
This study aimed to clarify why and how individuals engage in self-oriented behavioral
practices in alignment with health policy goals. Methods: A literature review of health,
hygiene, and sports since the Meiji Era was conducted. Results: Before the Meiji period,
health was an individual matter, but during the Meiji period, government-led training
and group activities for health promotion were enforced. In the postwar period, health
promotion became individual-oriented, and awareness was promoted through healthcare
manuals prepared by the government in line with international trends and the social
context. Challenge: Current health goals are lacking in inclusiveness and diversity. It is
therefore necessary to build a healthcare ecosystem that is inclusive and diverse, where
people recognize each other’s health requirements based on their individual characteristics
and life stages. This paper is part of the “Research on Sports and Health Literacy of
College Students in 21 KYOU-281,” a joint research project of the Research Institute of

Putting Old WineECP, Connectedness Condition, Island into New WineskinGraph Theory
Which graph-theoretical factors cause ungrammaticality with respect to the empty category
principle (ECP), connectedness condition (CC), and island effect? Why do the computational
procedures of human natural language (CHL) contain internal merge (IM)? Matrix
calculations reveal that (a) ECP/CC-related ungrammatical samples demonstrate that the
edges of verbal projections are disconnected from the entire structure in their best possible
force balance, which suggests that Kayne’s (1983) CC was on the right track essentially,
and (b) samples with the island effect show relatively higher gross potentials and currents,
which conforms to the minimal computation principle because less energy suggests less
error, and (c) a wh-in-situ sample contains the wh-IM edge with an extremely small
current. CHL contains IM because IM is a built-in grounding operation that sets the potential
of unpronounced nodes to zero, yielding loops in sentential networks to solve Kirchhoff’s

Exploring and Promoting English Study Abroad Beyond the Inner Circle
As a university that prioritises second language education and international
collaboration, study abroad programs have been a major part of both the curriculum
and identity of Momoyama Gakuin University. Currently, the study
abroad programs are going through a stage of transition, as we restart study
abroad after two years of travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this stage, we have found that previous partners have cancelled their
programs, and due to inflation and currency fluctuation, previously popular
destinations such as the USA have become prohibitively expensive for many
students. Therefore, English study abroad programs that offer more affordable
high quality English education and chances to use English outside the classroom
in Asian countries close to Japan are the most obvious and pragmatic
option. However, questions still remain if students will be as eager to study
abroad in countries outside the so-called Inner Circle English countries such
as Australia, Canada and the USA. This paper reviews research on Japanese
students’ experiences and learning outcomes of studying English in Outer Circle
and Expanding Circle countries in Asia. Insights from this research will be
useful for the successful implementation and promotion of new study abroad
programs at the university.departmental bulletin pape
Online Study Abroad – A Case Study of Japanese University Students’ Experiences of Studying English Online
This paper examines the experiences of two groups of Japanese
university undergraduate students who took part in a twenty-week English
online study abroad program. This was an intensive program with
the two groups being required to take either 120 hours or 90 hours of
online English classes during the study period.
TOEIC Listening and Reading (LR) score data was collected
before and after the course in order to measure improvement in the students’
English level. This was complemented by student questionnaires
to gain further insight into the students’ experiences, and course completion
statistics held by the university.
Overall, students’ average TOEIC LR scores increased by around
100 points in total, with both the Listening and the Reading section
seeing similar-sized increases. Student feedback about the course was
generally very positive with a strong sense of improvement being felt by
those who completed it. At the same time, there was some concern from
students about scheduling and, on an institutional level, about the dropout
rates for the course.departmental bulletin pape
