CFOA-based floating frequency dependent negative resistor, floating capacitance multiplier, and simulated floating inductor

    No full text
This paper introduces a new floating simulator circuit suitable for realizing a floating frequency dependent negative resistor (FFDNR) or a floating capacitance multiplier (FCM) with selections of the passive elements. In addition, a new circuit for realizing a simulated floating inductor (SFI) is introduced. The introduced FFDNR, FCM, and SFI use three current feedback operational amplifiers. The introduced FFDNR and FCM include a canonical number of passive components without any matching requirements, while the SFI contains three re-sistors and a grounded capacitor with a single resistive matching condition. Voltage-mode band-pass, low-pass, and notch filters are given as application examples

How well do ESWL nomograms predict treatment success in pediatric patients?

    No full text
Objective: To study was to identify the variables that influence the outcomes of pediatric SWL patients in our clinic and to compare our findings to previously published nomograms. Methods: All children who underwent SWL at a single center between 2005 and 2020 were included in this retrospective study. Depending upon the age and mental state of the children, SWL procedures were performed with or without anesthesia. Data from the hospital information system were obtained on patient characteristics, metabolic evaluation, imaging, SWL details, and post-procedure results, and their correlation with the Onal and Dogan nomograms was evaluated. Results: The present study included 112 pediatric patients in total. The average age was 8.22 ± 4.9 (83.3 ± 58.1 months, 4 months–16 years), and the median stone size was 9.5 ± 3.2 mm (4–20 mm). Even though there was quite a significant positive correlation between age and the number of shots and the intensity of shots (intensity and number of shots increased with increasing age), there was no statistical difference in the number of sessions and stone-free rates. The number of shots and sessions was significantly lower in patients with hydronephrosis (N = 70) than in those without (N = 42) (p < 0.001). When the stone-free rates of patients without and with hydronephrosis were compared, it was discovered that they were 69.05% and 92.86%, respectively, which was statistically significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions: It is believed that the nomograms developed for SWL in pediatric patients should be reviewed, and larger, prospective studies should be conducted. © The Author(s) 2022

A kurdish translator's badge in Turkiye-an identity card or a false id: Cevirmen as a translatorial autobiography

    No full text
The (self-)investigation of translation in the framing narrative of a novel can provide resourceful insights into the translational performance and translatorial experience in the relevant spatial and temporal background. In these cases, translation emerges as an integral part of creation, embodiment and/ or voicing of meaning and identity. Cevirmen (2018) is an autobiographical novel by Vahdettin Ince who skillfully tells his life story and constructs his identity through the works he translated. To this end, Ince intriguingly coalesces with his translations into Turkish and defines them as an ontological quest as a human pursuing a profession in translation. His self-portrayal of a translator's identity with a focus on his Kurdish ethnicity emerges as a melting pot for differences, tensions, and conflicts he experiences during the evolution of his personal and professional habitus' reverberating through his mother tongue Kurdish, and the official state language Turkish. In this study, Cevirmen is viewed as an authentic, ideological, and heavily translational piece of writing which provides insightful views about a self-made translator's evolution and his resort to translation for survival in the tense political and multi-ethnic/ lingual case of Turkiye. Filling up a micro space in translation history, the analysis voices the conflicts a translator goes through in multi-ethnic conditions; and thus, I suggest reading Cevirmen as an (un)intentional theorization on the "translator". © Peter Lang GmbH

The novel Mütercim as a site of transfiction: A case of translation in life and the translation of life in the transformational republican era in Turkey

    No full text
Translation has a rich history in Ottoman and Turkish literature, and a study of transmesis in a transfiction has great potentials for analyzing the praxis and pragmatics of translation in Turkey. This study focuses on the translational action in the mirror of fiction with a case study on the Turkish novel Mütercim (2013) [Translator] by Alper Gürkan. Investigating translation both as a performance (i.e., text) and an experience (i.e., agency), the analysis is constructed upon four categories: 1) actual translation in its technical sense; (2) the agency of the translator as a subject and object of the translation; (3) figurative/metaphoric use of translation; and (4) the potentials of mistranslation vis-a-vis pseudotranslation. The multi-layered translational baggage of the novel serves as a site par excellence to delimit the definition of translation, which begins as a faithful translation and ends up as an almost genuine writing, a mistranslation in the novel. Skillfully imposed attributions to change, transformation, fragmentation, and dislocation under a translational context determine the fate of both the text and the agent in Mütercim: corrupted and originally lost. This elegy for origins resonates in the discourse of the author as neo-Ottoman fantasy where we witness the emergence of translation as the lieu of historical criticism under the guise of a transfiction. © 2023 University of Western Sydneys. No full text
25th International Conference on Electromagnetics in Advanced Applications, ICEAA 2023 -- 9 October 2023 through 13 October 2023 -- -- 194163optimizing high-dimensional designs requires essential efforts; bending of a radiating device is one of such examples. Such appearance appears in various applications like medical, space, radar, etc. Consequently, strong numerical methods are becoming necessary. In the present work, an optimized bent periodic structure, multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna designed through a neural network (NN) is presented. The main goal of this optimization is to focus on the curvature of the antenna to find the suitable results for S-parameters both in terms of reflection S11, and transmission S21 coefficients, and also total active reflection coefficient (TARC). Through the proposed method, the antenna configuration loaded by meandered slot and surrounded by printed meander line of different periodicities is designed and optimized in three frequency bands within the 12.94 GHz to 25 GHz range, namely, 12.94 - 14.79 GHz, 16.09 - 17.25 GHz, and 19.17 - 25 GHz. © 2023 IEEE

Is There a Difference in Parental Attitudes and Attachment for ADHD-Social Phobia Comorbidity?

    No full text
Objective: Social phobia (SP) is one the most common of comorbid anxiety disorders seen with ADHD. It is also known that social phobia and ADHD patients have some differences in parental attitudes and attachment styles. This study aims to investigate the effects of attachment status and parental attitudes in ADHD-social phobia comorbidity. Methods: 66 children and adolescents with ADHD were included in the study. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School -Age Children -Present and Lifetime Version, DSM-5 November 2016-Turkish Adaptation (KSADS-PL-DSM5-T) was used for evaluating diagnosis. Socioeconomic status (SES) was scored using the Hollingshead Redlich Scale. Sociodemographic and clinical data were recorded. Adult Attachment Scale (AAS) and Parental Attitudes Research Instrument (PARI) were filled in by the parents. The patients filled in the Kerns Security Scale (KSS). We compared the ADHD patients with and without SAD comorbidity in terms of scales used and sociodemographic-clinical variables. Results: There were no differences between ADHD+SP group and ADHD without SP group in terms of age, gender, SES, family structure and family history of diagnosed psychiatric disease(p>0.05). Rate of inattentive subtype of ADHD (p=0.05) and comorbid psychiatric disease frequency (p=0.00) was higher in ADHD+SP group compared to ADHD without social phobia group. However, the groups did not differ according to their attachment styles, their parent's attachment styles or parental attitudes (p>0.05).Conclusion: Parental attitudes and attachment styles may not play a role in the development of SP comorbidity in children and adolescents with ADHD. Other biological and environmental factors should be kept in mind when evaluating and treating children with ADHD who have SP. Biological treatments and individualized interventions such as CBT may be preferred as a first line treatment rather than psychotherapies targeting attachment and parenting styles in those children

Development of Upper Euphrates Basin hydro-economic model and hydropower generation optimization

    No full text
Hydro-economic optimization models are common in hydropower reservoir modeling to aid system operators and planners. In these models, operations are driven by the economic value and constrained by the availability of water. The objective is to either minimize total costs or maximize total benefits. In this study, a hydro-economic optimization model for the integrated reservoir system of the Upper Euphrate s Basin, with major tributaries providing water flow to the Euphrates River, is introduced. These model the 10 large-scale reservoirs of the basin with a total installed capacity of 3,255 MW. Water management and hydropower decision-making operations are evaluated with a piecewise linear programming algorithm in monthly time steps using a 45-year historical hydrology between 1971 and 2016. The model aims to maximize hydropower revenue over a long-term time horizon with energy prices varying by month. Reservoir storage and turbine release decisions are optimized for multiple hydropower plants connected in serial or parallel. Hydropower generation, revenue, reservoir storage, capacity ratios and generation reliability results are analyzed. Results show that these hydropower plants generate about 9,481 Gigawatt hour (GWh) of energy with an average turbine capacit y use of 36% and obtain a revenue of 620 million $ per year

Social Alienation and Loneliness in Mansfield’s “Miss Brill” and “The Daughters of the Late Colonel”

    No full text
The concept of alienation is used to characterize a person’s lack of interest in and/or incapacity to make a meaningful connection with others, even with themselves, with the physical world, and with institutions including social, political, and religious ones. This notion, which also represents the era Katherine Mansfield lived in and the kind of life she led, can be applied to examine her short stories “Miss Brill” and “The Daughters of the Late Colonel”, published in The Garden Party and Other Stories (1922) collection. In the narratives, Miss Brill and the Pinner Sisters behave in a way that reflects their social alienation in society, however, Mansfield uniquely addresses the issue. In “Miss Brill”, first published in 1920, the old lady becomes vulnerable due to her desire to interact with others in the Jardins Publiques every Sunday, which eventually causes her to realize how estranged she is from the people around her. As opposed to Miss Brill, Mansfield portrays the Pinner sisters as being socially isolated because of their self-induced oppression. The demands of their father have so thoroughly dominated Constantia and Josephine’s lives that they have never had an opportunity to form their own unique identities. The death of their father could be a chance for the daughters to awaken, allowing them to break free from the colonel’s authority and discover that a life outside is possible. But still, the internalized oppression of the women keeps them from staying connected with others and being free. This article discusses how Mansfield handles the issue of social alienation and loneliness by using spinsters with different lifestyles and how solitude negatively affects their daily routine
