No full textSosyal bilimler, tarihsel olarak toplumsal dönüşümlerle eşzamanlı ilerleyen, kimi zaman bu dönüşümleri açıklama gücüyle öne çıkan, kimi zaman ise kendi kavramsal ve yöntemsel sınırlarını sorgulamak zorunda kalan bir bilgi alanı olmuştur. Pozitivizm–yorumsayıcılık gerilimi, yapı–fail tartışmaları ve postmodern eleştiriler, sosyal bilimlerin yalnızca araştırma nesnelerini değil, hakikat anlayışlarını, bilgi üretim biçimlerini ve kamusal rollerini de derinden etkilemiştir. Zygmunt Bauman’ın “akışkan modernite” kavramıyla işaret ettiği üzere, toplumsal yapıların ve ilişkilerin giderek daha kırılgan, geçici ve belirsiz hâle gelmesi, sosyal bilimleri sürekli bir yeniden düşünme sürecine zorlamaktadır.
21. Yüzyılın ilk çeyreği ise bu sorgulamaları daha da derinleştiren çoklu krizlerle şekillenmiştir. Ekonomik güvencesizliğin ve prekaryalaşmanın yaygınlaşması, siyasal alanın merkezileşmesi ve otoriterleşmesi, savaşlar ve zorunlu göçler, ekolojik yıkımın geri dönülmez boyutlara ulaşması ve dijital teknolojilerin - özellikle yapay zekâ, büyük veri ve algoritmik sistemlerin - toplumsal yaşamı dönüştüren etkileri, sosyal bilimleri yeni bir eşikte konumlandırmaktadır. Bu bağlamda sosyal bilimler, yalnızca toplumu analiz eden disiplinler olmaktan çıkarak, belirsizlik, güvensizlik ve hızla değişen gerçeklik koşulları altında bilgi üretmenin kendisini de sorgulayan eleştirel bir alan hâline gelmiştir.
Doğuş Üniversitesi Sosyoloji Bölümü tarafından düzenlenen “Yarını Yeniden Düşünmek: Sosyal Bilimlerin Dönüşümü ve Geleceği” başlıklı bu ulusal konferans, tam da bu tarihsel ve düşünsel bağlamdan hareketle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu krizler; yağmur, kuraklık, deprem gibi doğa olaylarının, ekonomik, politik, toplumsal dinamikler beraberinde alınmayan veya eksik alınan tedbirler sonucu afete dönüşmesi ve ardından afet yönetimi süreçlerinde tecrübe edilen eksikliklerle daha da belirgin hale gelmiştir. Doğuş Üniversitesi Sosyoloji Bölümü olarak, akademisyenler, STK’lar, politika yapıcılar ve kamuoyu arasında Türkiye ve dünyada meydana gelen bu karmaşık ve çok yönlü zorlukları ele almayı, yaşanan doğal afetler, toplumsal krizler ve bunların neden olduğu toplumsal travmalar konusunda diyalog ve iş birliğini teşvik etmeyi amaçlayarak bu yılki konferans temasını “Afetler, Krizler ve Toplumsal Travmalar” olarak belirledik. Afetler, krizler ve toplumsal travmalar, sadece doğal olaylardan kaynaklanan acil durumlarla sınırlı değil, aynı zamanda insan etkileşimleri, toplumsal yapılar ve kültürel dinamiklerle de bağlantılıdır.
5-6 Aralık 2024 tarihlerinde gerçekleştirdiğimiz konferans, katılımcılara geniş bir perspektif sunmayı hedeflemiş; afet ve toplumsal krizlerin sadece fiziki çevreyi değil, aynı zamanda toplumun kültürel dokusunu, ekonomiyi ve kültürel yapısını nasıl etkilediğini anlamak için bir araştırma ve tartışma platformu olmuştur. Alanında uzman araştırmacıların, akademisyenlerin, doktora ve yüksek lisans öğrencilerinin, STK’lardan
katılımcıların afetler, krizler ve toplumsal travmalar konusunda yürüttükleri tartışmalara, çalışmalara ve deneyim paylaşımlarına tanıklık etmiş ve ev sahipliği yapmış olmaktan büyük mutluluk duymaktayız.

Design, synthesis, and structural investigations of novel (S)-amide derivatives as promising ACE inhibitors
No full textNovel derivatives of potential angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE-I) inhibitors (compounds 5a-e) were synthesized by reacting homophthalic anhydride with methyl esters of L-amino acids (L-isoleucine, L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, L-methionine, and L-serine). This reaction resulted in yields of 85% for compound 5a, 83% for compound 5b, 84% for compound 5c, 80% for compound 5d, and 85% for compound 5e. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by 1D and 2D NMR methods. In silico ADME properties of compounds 5a-e conform to Lipinski's drug rules. The in silico toxicological determination of the synthesized compounds suggest that compound 5a exhibits significant potential for adverse effects, such as causing hormonal imbalances. In comparison, the remaining compounds 5b-c demonstrate a lower risk profile. In silico biological activities of compounds 5a-e in the active site of ACE-I were determined by docking, which were then compared to the FDA approved antihypertensive drugs enalalapril and lisinopril. Docking studies revealed that compound 5b (Delta G(comp) = -8.851 kcal/mol) possesses the greatest binding affinity in the Zn2+ binding site of ACE-I compared to those of lisinoprilat (Delta G(comp) = -8.066 kcal/mol) and enalapril (Delta G(comp) = -7.187 kcal/mol), strongly suggesting a great potential to be a lead candidate for novel antihypertensive drug development
Multi-objective optimization of a pond aeration system using Taguchi-based gray relational analysis
No full textThere is a growing interest in high-performance, sustainable, and efficient aeration technologies to ensure the necessary oxygen levels in ponds, wastewater treatment plants, and aquaculture areas. Multiple optimization efforts are mandatory to maximize the aeration performance and energy efficiency of high-aeration performance systems simultaneously. This study aims to optimize the aeration performance of aquaculture systems using the Taguchi-based gray relational analysis (GRA) method. Taguchi-based gray relational analysis method has been preferred due to its capability of enabling optimization with fewer experiments, analyzing interactions among independent variables, and its applicability in both linear and nonlinear systems. The use of the Taguchi-based GRA method to improve efficiency in the aeration process is a novel approach for these systems with multiple variables. In this study, the optimal parameter levels for the conduit aeration system were determined and compared with the initial levels through validation tests. Additionally, the effects of parameters on aeration performance and energy cost were analyzed. As a result, it was determined that the aeration performance of the system increased fourfold compared to the initial level, and the cost decreased sixfold. It was observed that the most effective parameter on the system is the gate opening, and the least effective parameter is the tank diameter. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024

Impact of Multi-Fault Ruptures on Liquefiable Soil Dynamics
No full textIn earthquake-resistant design, the characteristics of ground motion and soil conditions play a crucial role. Soil liquefaction, a critical issue in earthquake engineering, leads to significant ground deformations, including lateral spreading, settlements, and shear strain accumulation. While extensive research has focused on single-fault rupture, the impact of multiple-fault ruptures on liquefiable soils remains underexplored. This study examines the dynamic behavior of liquefiable soils subjected to single and multiple-fault ruptures through two-dimensional nonlinear fully coupled effective stress analyses within the Open Source Earthquake Engineering System (OpenSees) framework. The seismic response of saturated sandy soils with varying relative densities is simulated by the Pressure Dependent Multi Yield Material 02 (PDMY02) model. Three seismic records (Antakya record from the 2023 Kahramanmara & scedil; earthquake, Sakarya record from the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, and Izmit aftershock record from the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake) were analyzed to assess settlements, lateral spreading, and excess pore water pressure. The results demonstrate that multiple-fault ruptures induce more complex and severe soil responses than single ruptures. These findings enhance the understanding of soil behavior under seismic loading, emphasizing the necessity of considering multiple-fault ruptures in liquefaction analysis for improved earthquake resilience
The relationship between shari'ah convergence and market-to-book value: A case study of firms in Islamic countries
No full textThis study ranks 1235 companies operating in 10 different Islamic countries according to their degree of Shari'ah convergence and investigates the relationship between a firm's market-to-book ratio and convergence to Shari'ah rules. We determine Shari'ah screening variables by reviewing existing Shari'ah market indices and their screening rules; variable weights are determined using the criterion impact loss (CILOS) method, a well-known, multicriteria decision-making technique. The results show that the degree of Shari'ah convergence has a statistically significant negative effect on the market-to-book ratio, which can be seen as a proxy for the market value of equity
Öğrencilerin yiyecek içecek sektörüne yönelik algılarının belirlenmesi üzerine bir araştırma
No full textYoğun rekabet ortamında faaliyet gösteren yiyecek içecek işletmelerinin ayakta kalabilmeleri ve uzun yıllar faaliyetlerini sürdürebilmeleri ancak nitelikli personel ile mümkün olabilmektedir. Bu nedenle bu alanda eğitim alan öğrencilerin sektöre yönelik bakış açıları son derece önemlidir. Bu çalışmada Gastronomi ve Mutfak Sanatları Bölümü öğrencilerinin sektöre yönelik algıları incelenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda bir alan araştırması gerçekleştirilmiştir. Verilerin elde edilmesinde anketlerden yararlanılmış ve evrende yer alan öğrencilerin tamamına ulaşılacağı düşünüldüğünden tam sayım yapılmıştır. Araştırma neticesinde öğrencilerin sektöre yönelik genel algılarının olumlu olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Genel olarak öğrencilerin gastronomi alanında terfi olanakları ve kişi-sektör uyumuna ilişkin algılarının olumlu olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Buna karşın öğrencilerin gastronomi alanında işin doğası ve fiziksel çalışma koşullarına bakış açılarının olumsuz olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin demografik özelliklerine göre sektöre yönelik algılarında farklılıklar olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Staj yapan ve sektör deneyimi olan öğrencilerin yiyecek içecek sektörüne yönelik genel algılarının staj yapmayan ve sektör deneyimi olmayan öğrencilere göre daha olumsuz yönde olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
