Development and assessment of alternative designs for side impact beam

    No full text
Side collisions are the second most important cause of death and injury in traffic accidents. Such collisions are riskier than frontal collisions as there are no unique bumpers to absorb the impacts and the space between the passenger and the door is very limited. Therefore, one of the most studied collision types in vehicle safety research is side collisions. Passenger safety is ensured by the A, B, C-Pillar and the side impact beam. This study aims to design and test a composite side door impact beam with a higher strength/weight ratio against impacts. For this purpose, side impact beam design alternatives were created from glass fiber reinforced polymer composite and carbon fiber polymer composite materials, and the samples were tested to obtain maximum force, maximum stress, force/weight ratio, stress/weight ratio, energy absorption ability, specific energy absorption, cost, and mass results. Then, the effectiveness of the designed side impact beams was discussed by comparing the results obtained from the quasi-static compression tests. The study results show that an optimum design can be suggested by evaluating such structural elements in terms of many parameters and establishing trade-off relations between the parameters. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

A novel artificial hummingbird algorithm improved by natural survivor method

    No full text
The artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) has been applied in various fields of science and provided promising solutions. Although the algorithm has demonstrated merits in the optimization area, it suffers from local optimum stagnation and poor exploration of the search space. To overcome these drawbacks, this study redesigns the update mechanism of the original AHA algorithm with the natural survivor method (NSM) and proposes a novel metaheuristic called NSM-AHA. The strength of the developed algorithm is that it performs population management not only according to the fitness function value but also according to the NSM score value. The adopted strategy contributes to NSM-AHA exhibiting powerful local optimum avoidance and unique exploration ability. The optimization ability of the proposed NSM-AHA algorithm was compared with 21 state-of-the-art algorithms over CEC 2017 and CEC 2020 benchmark functions with dimensions of 30, 50, and 100, respectively. Based on the Friedman test results, it was observed that NSM-AHA ranked 1st out of 22 competitive algorithms, while the original AHA ranked 8th. This result highlights that the NSM update mechanism provides a remarkable evolution in the convergence performance of the original AHA algorithm. Furthermore, two constrained engineering problems including the optimization of single-diode solar cell model (SDSCM) parameters and the design of a power system stabilizer (PSS) are solved with the proposed algorithm. The NSM-AHA algorithm provided better results compared to other algorithms with a value of 9.86E ? 04 root mean square error for SDSCM and 1.43E ? 03 integral time square error for PSS. The experimental results showed that the proposed NSM-AHA is a competitive optimizer for solving global and engineering problems. © The Author(s) 2024.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTA

Prediction of daily global solar radiation in different climatic conditions using metaheuristic search algorithms: a case study from Türkiye

    No full text
Today’s many giant sectors including energy, industry, tourism, and agriculture should closely track the variation trends of solar radiation to take more benefit from the sun. However, the scarcity of solar radiation measuring stations represents a significant obstacle. This has prompted research into the estimation of global solar radiation (GSR) for various regions using existing climatic and atmospheric parameters. While prediction methods cannot supplant the precision of direct measurements, they are invaluable for studying and utilizing solar energy on a global scale. From this point of view, this paper has focused on predicting daily GSR data in three provinces (Afyonkarahisar, Rize, and Ağrı) which exhibit disparate solar radiation distributions in Türkiye. In this context, Gradient-Based Optimizer (GBO), Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO), Barnacles Mating Optimizer (BMO), Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), and Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO) have been employed to model the daily GSR data. The algorithms were calibrated with daily historical data of five input variables including sunshine duration, actual pressure, moisture, wind speed, and ambient temperature between 2010 and 2017 years. Then, they were tested with daily data for the 2018 year. In the study, a series of statistical metrics (R2, MABE, RMSE, and MBE) were employed to elucidate the algorithm that predicts solar radiation data with higher accuracy. The prediction results demonstrated that all algorithms achieved the highest R2 value in Rize province. It has been found that SCA (MABE of 0.7023 MJ/m2, RMSE of 0.9121 MJ/m2, and MBE of 0.2430 MJ/m2) for Afyonkarahisar province and GBO (RMSE of 0.8432 MJ/m2, MABE of 0.6703 MJ/m2, and R2 of 0.8810) for Ağrı province are the most effective algorithms for estimating GSR data. The findings indicate that each of the metaheuristic algorithms tested in this paper has the potential to predict daily GSR data within a satisfactory error range. However, the GBO and SCA algorithms provided the most accurate predictions of daily GSR data. © The Author(s) 2024.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTA

The antenna is developed using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate owing to the advantage of transparency and flexibility with an overall size of 40 mm × 38 mm × 1 mm. The antenna radiating structure is composed of an elliptical shape radiator along with a filter, designed to pass lower band while filtering out the UWB spectrum. To achieve mode reconfigurability two pion diodes are inserted between the ports of antenna and radiating structure. Various antenna characteristics are discussed to provide the working mechanism of the antenna. Moreover, a brief comparison with state-of-the-art is performed to show the potential of methodology adopted to design proposed antenna. © 2024 IEEE

Long latency trigemino-cervical reflex in restless legs syndrome

    No full text
Objective: The trigemino-cervical complex (TCC) seems under dopaminergic inhibitory control and the abnormalities of trigemino-cervical reflex (TCR) have been reported in disorders associated with the dopaminergic system and various pain disorders. If the inhibitory response in TCC is likely dopaminergic, we hypothesized that TCR, which has never been evaluated in restless legs syndrome (RLS) patients before, would be also abnormal. Methods: TCR was recorded from bilateral sternocleidomastoid and splenius capitis muscles in consecutive 15 drug-naive RLS patients and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. The right and left infraorbital branches of the trigeminal nerve were stimulated by percutaneous electrical stimulation separately. The presence rates, onset latencies, amplitudes, and durations of responses were measured and compared between patients with RLS and controls. Results: The presence rates, onset latencies and amplitudes of TCR responses were similar between RLS patients and controls, however, the durations of responses were bilaterally longer in RLS patients compared to healthy volunteers. Conclusions: Hyperexcitability of TCR suggests defective sensory processing in the brainstem probably due to impairment of descending inhibitory dopaminergic system in RLS. The sensitization of TCC in RLS patients may also be a possible factor that might explain the association of RLS and pain disorders. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Fully charmed resonance X(6900) and its beauty counterpart

    No full text
The fully heavy scalar tetraquarks T-4Q =QQQQ, (Q=c,b) are explored in the context of QCD sum rule method. We model T-4Q as diquark-antidiquark systems composed of pseudoscalar constituents, and calculate their masses m((')) and couplings f((')) within the two-point sum rule approach. Our results m=(6928 +/- 50)MeV and m '= (18858 +/- 50) MeV for masses of the tetraquarks T-4c and T-4b prove that they can decay to hidden-flavor heavy mesons. The full width Gamma(4c) of the T-4c is evaluated by taking into account the decay channels T-4c -> J/psi J/psi, J/psi psi ', eta(c)eta(c), eta(c)eta(c)(2S),eta X-c(c1)(1P), and Xc0Xc0. The partial widths of these processes depend on strong couplings g(i) at vertices T(4c)J/psi J/psi, T(4c)J/psi psi ' etc., which are computed using the QCD three-point sum rule method. The decay T-4b -> eta(b)eta(b )is used to find the width Gamma(4b) of the T-4b. The predictions for m and Gamma(4c)=(128 +/- 22)MeV are compared with parameters of the fully charmed resonances reported by the LHCb, ATLAS, and CMS Collaborations. Based on this analysis, we interpret the tetraquark T-4c as a candidate to the resonance X(6900). The mass m ' and width Gamma(4b)=(94 +/- 28)MeV of the exotic meson T-4b can be used in future experimental investigations of these states
