Los albores de la historiografía griega. Dialéctica entre mito e historia

    No full text
The rise of Greek Historiography takes place between the end of the VI century B. C. and the early years of the V century B. C. The logographi in search of the logos and the physiologi in search of the φύσις appear at the same time. Both confront a mythical tradition and try to discover the coherent and verisimilar element in myth. Historiography looks for the historicity of the real facts hidden inside myth. The result is a dialectic struggle between myth and history. No disponibl

Is there an augment in η before ϝ in ηὗρον?

    No full text
This paper defends two ideas: one, that ηὗρον derives from *ἐ-ϝρ-ον, a form with a normal augment in ε and not η, by means of the following process: *ε-ϝρ-ον > ἑ-ϋρ-ον > εὗρον, with a change to ηὗρον by analogy with verbs which began with a vowel; the other, that the form *ϝρ-, which led to the aorist ηὗρον and from this led to the present εὑρίσκω, with the meaning ‘to find, uncover, show’, derives from the same root as *ϝερ-, which means ‘to say’, just as the aorist ἔδειζα, ‘to show’ is from the same root as the Latin dicere, ‘to say’.No disponibl

Metátesis de cantidad en jónico-ático y heracleota

Quantitative metathesis (QM) in Ionic-Attic (e. g. νηός > νηώς) is usually conceived of as a phonetic process, typologically uncommon, which merely involves a transfer of length from one vowel to another. This traditional doctrine suffers from serious shortcomings. A more fruitful approach favoured by Schwyzer and other scholars views QM as resulting from synizesis (syllabicity loss) of a long vowel with simultaneous compensatory lengthening of the following vowel: e. g. νηός > νε̯ώς. This scenario is superior to the standard explanation on different counts: (a) it presents us with an internally coherent change, parallels for which may be easily found in languages other than Greek; (b) it accounts both for the systematic co-occurrence of synizesis and quantitative metathesis, and is consistent with the different behaviour of monosyllables vs. polysyllables as regards QM in Homeric epics; (c) it makes sense out of some apparent anomalies in accentuation. The second part of the paper deals with the outcome ιω (< /eo/) in the Heraclean Tables and in literary texts, which turns out to be another instance of QM. The lengthening of /o/ compensates for the loss of a mora caused by the synizesis of /e/ in an open syllable. Synizesis followed by the absorption of yod into /s/ explains the controversial 3rd pl. future forms in -σοντι, -σονται which al first glance look «non-Doric».No disponibl

Das Barbarenbild des Poseidonios und seine Stellung in der philosophischen Tradition

    No full text
The author gives an account of the ideas of the Greeks (Herodot, Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle) about the barbarians. They hesitate between admiring some barbarians, or, on the contrary, considering them unvalued people in comparison with the Greeks, and the theory of the climate, which would be definitive on the formation of the men’s bodies and souls. Poseidonios discusses this problem in a well known fragment in which he tells how the Mariandins submitted to Heraclea because they found themselves inferior. We can come across with traces of his thought on Cicero, De re publica III and Strabo, VI. In conclusion, Poseidonios justifies the Roman world power because its superiority, and this because the climate of Italy. However, he insists that this power must be used with justice and blames the bloody actions of the Sicilian slave war.No disponibl

Periplectómeno. La aristeia de una vieja figura cómica

    No full text
Periplectomenus, a character of problematic classification on which the thesis of contaminatio by Miles is based, has traditionally been related to senes lepidi. A comparative study shows that this character does not belong to this group and the features that make him differ bring him close to the parasite-sodalis opitulator. The aristeia provides the clues to interpret him: two dramatic lines converge on him, the one is reality, the other is pretensions, coinciding his features with the ones of the ὀψιμαθής described by Theophrastus in Characters. His complexity is the reason of his bad luck.No disponibl

La geografía de Egipto en Diodoro de Sicilia

    No full text
This paper attempts to show that the geographical chapters concerning Egypt in the first book of Diodorus’ Bibliotheca are not to be explained, as it is usually done, from the viewpoint of an ethnographical utopia, but from that of the encomium of a country, recognized as such in ancient handbooks of Rhetoric. It also attempts to point out that the ultimate responsibility of these chapters must be ascribed to Diodorus himself, who has described the geography of Egypt in Book I in an encomiastic way quite coherent with the role that it plays in the following books of his Bibliotheca. No disponibl
