Get PDFThe laudatory judgment on Commodus by the Christian poet Dracontius, contrary to the widespread historical tradition, springs [rom a favourable tradition diffused not only in the Christian sphere: the examination of contemporary inscriptions and of literary sources, such as Joannes Malalas and Eusebius, allows to reconstruct a wide favourable tradition, also in the pagan sphere, which praised Commodus' victories, exalted his reign as an age of universal peace and showed off, contrary to the senatorial tradition, the noteworthy advantages granted by the Emperor to the provinces. ibis tradition must have been very strong in Africa, where Dracontius lived, through the memory of Commodus' policy in favour of the African provincesNo disponible

Get PDFThe analysis of texts and glossaries contained in the manuscript ACA Ripoll 59 reveals various compilations of glossaries and «computation» texts, besides Priscian's grammar, which is the most important text in the manuscript. The analysis and identification of the fragments in ACA Ripoll 59 the same as those in Vat. Reg. Lat. 123, which also belongs to the manuscripts found in Ripoll, corresponding to various chapters of Beda, allow us to study the different currents that exerted their cultural influence in the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. Through the variants established for each of the texts that have been identified, one detects the influence of various families of manuscripts in the composition of these fragments.No disponible

No full textTacitus’ account of Vitellius’ triumphal entry into Rome is used by the author to underline his disapproval of this emperor. However the historian’s description of the Vitellian army has often been seen as positive and in sharp contrast to that given to the emperor himself. This article attempts to show that on close inspection Tacitus’ account is equally hostile to the emperor’s troops and that his disapproval is reinforced by his dwelling upon the colour of their uniforms and the varied associations this would have had in the Roman mind.No disponibl
Notes on praetors in Spain in the mid-second century B. C.
No full textThis article reassesses the ancient evidence on the praetors who fought in the Spains in the 150s and 140s, and argues against some recent reconstructions of the fasti praetorii for these years. In particular, two new possibilities are offered: L. Mummius, pr. in Hispania Ulterior 155 and prorogued through (at least) 154; and C. Laelius, pr. in a city jurisdiction in 145, and sent ex praetura to Citerior in 144, when his friend Scipio Aemilianus secured the removal of the Spains from the consular sortition for that year. If correct, this example of a city praetor setting out after the year of the magistracy for an overseas province would provide an early precedent for what was later to be a common practice, which Sulla as dictator finally was to institutionalize.No disponibl

He points out some prohibitions and restrictions about the use of the domain. The author thinks that areśtalo refers to the inscription itself. No full textAlcman uses the local dialect in his compositions to a much greater extent than it is usually thought. He knows very well the resorts of the previous literary language and fits them in his own dialect, but without excessive concessions to this epic literary language, in such a way that his compositions contain linguistic keys compatible with the epichoric dialect. This use of Laconian explains the linking of his compositions to the local folklore. In the Hellenistic period his texts were reviewed, although attempting to preserve its original Laconian flavour, in order to adapt them to the late Doric literary language, following a key close lo Theocrit’s, since, from the literary point of view, the Laconian dialect provides ἥκιστα ... τὸ εὔφωνον.No disponibl
