Nuevos textos sapienciales griegos en obras árabe-castellanas

    Get PDF
A substantial part of Wisdom Literature texts translated to Castilian by the order of King Alfonso X come from Greek originals: that is certified by the Arab translators of Libro de los Buenos Proverbios (Hunayn) and Poridat de Poridades (ibn Batrik); and two other books, Bocados de Oro and Historia de la donzella Teodor, show the same characteristics. This paper is a first attempt to reconstruct, as fully as possible, the Greek models, as well as to trace their evolution from the 4th century B.C. to the 7th/8th A.D., when the books came to Arabs, directly or through Syriac translations. –– Despite some Arab touch, these works are essentially the Greek texts of the Roman Imperial period, slightly modified by the Byzantine who added religious and palatine allusions, as well as Christian proverbs. Contents and form are coincident with the antique Wisdom Literature as far as we can know it, specially from the Lifes followed by collections of proverbs, and from the literature about Alexander the Great and Aristotle. No disponible

    Technical language in Tibullus

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to illustrate that despite his overall stylistic elegantia Tibullus's language is by no means colourless and undifferentiated. His style is capable of considerable elaboration and variety which is all the more effective in contrast with his general purity of diction. In the excursus on cheese-making at II 3.41a-16, for example, T.'s use of technical terms puts him closer to Theocritus than to his Roman contemporaries in pastoral or elegy. The same delight in technical display, which may owe something to his patron Messalla's interest in the Latin language, can be seen in T.'s description of road-building at I 7.57-60 and in his frequent use elsewhere of technical terms connected with textiles and agriculture. No disponible

Eurípides y la retórica: éthos e inventio en el discurso de Helena (Troyanas, 914-96)

    Get PDF
From the standpoint of the elements that link fifth-century tragedy with rhetoric and sophistic, it is possible to analyse the Euripides drama. In this sense, Troades, written around 415 b.C, offer the possibility to frame their agones inside the structure of dissoi logoi, through which the tragic characters argues their causes. The aim of this paper is to examine the Helens’ speech and the strategy of defense she performed in face of her accusers Hecuba and Menelaus, modelled through the ethos and inuentio. No disponible

El Panatenaico de Isócrates: 2.- Tema y finalidad del discurso

    Get PDF
Isocrates began to write the Panathenaicus in the year 342 b.C. When he had reached paragraph 199, illness forced him to give up the writing of his work for three years. He revised and finished it in 339. The orator, who had already composed the Philippus in 346, never thought of addressing a second speech to the Macedonian king in 342, just when the city was clearly against Philippus. Isocrates' aim was actually to defend his own idea of education and his record as statesman in order to reject his adversaries' attacks. Therefore he chose as a subject for his speech a praise of Archaic Athens, a choice which allowed him to vindicate his patriotism and, at the same time, to be critical of the contemporary politics of his home town.No disponible

Las proteicas vacas del Himno a Hermes: dicción formular y parodia

    Get PDF
Along the lines of a previous work on the connotative use of formular diction in the Hymn to Hermes, and adopting the position of those who defend the possibly intentional use of the formulae of the epos as opposed to their traditional functional conception in verse composition, the author attempts to explain a pair of apparently contradictory expressions regarding the cows, which had been attributed to an impaired use of formular diction. In order to do this, a contextual analysis was made of the total and of each one of the expressions designating the cows throughout the poem, which demonstrates that, on the contrary, there is a high degree of refinement and an important parodic element in the management of the diction. No disponible

Suplemento al inventario de la fábula greco-latina. Épocas arcaica, clásica y helenística

    Get PDF
In this article the author presents those fables occurring in Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greek literature which can be added to F. R. Adrados' Inventario y documentación de la fábula greco-latina. These fables can be found in a great variety of other literary genres, viz. in the works of epic and lyric poets, tragedians and comedians, satyric playwrights and epigrammatists, rhetoricians, orators, historiographers, and philosophers. All of the passages that will be discussed are of intrinsic importance as they predate the versions extant in the fable collections. Moreover, many of the supplementary references given below are more or less significant variations on well-known fable themes, whereas others are actually unique in the ancient fable corpus. No disponible

La diosa Ataecina y el nombre de la noche en antiguo irlandés

    Get PDF
In the last years the number of known inscriptions devoted to the Hispanic goddess Ataecina has greatly increased due to new findings. They have provided us with some new variations of her name, which can serve as the basis for a reconsideration of the etymologies so far proposed for it. A connection with Old Irish adaig 'night' has sometimes been advocated for, which after analysing the whole evidence now available proves to be right. Nevertheless, the etymology of that Irish word was itself in need of revision. Both seem to have been built on *adak -, analysable as the prefix ad- followed by the lE root *ak-. We would thus have here an innovation common to an Hispano-Celtic dialect and Goidelic. No disponible
