    No full text
The conjunction καθότι, which resulted from the fusion of καθ᾽ ὅ τι “according to which, in the manner that”, serves to introduce comparative subordinate clauses of quality or manner. According to the LSJ dictionary supplements, καθότι has an additional, locative function, attested in Pausanias. A second possible example of this locative καθότι occurs in a passage of Herodotus as transmitted through the Roman family of manuscripts. This function could be compared with the pseudo-locative function of ὡς, which, actually, results from an illusion created by the semantic and pragmatic context. However, there are some arguments suggesting that, in the examples in question, καθότι is not a mere substitute for a relative adverb of place, but has its own spatial meaning. Everything indicates that this locative καθότι is merely a misspelling of the manuscripts, which should be corrected to καθ᾽ ὅ τι.La conjunción καθότι, resultado de la fusión de καθ᾽ ὅ τι “según lo cual, de la manera que”, sirve para introducir subordinadas comparativas de cualidad o manera.

In this paper the author offers an interpretation of the word acerbus, in literary texts and metrical inscriptions (where a specialized meaning for premature death is always found), according to the Metaphor Contemporary Theory (MCT). The study of acerbus within the frame of MCT allows us to propose a satisfactory translation of this difficult term, in both literary and epigraphic texts. Finally, the comparative study of acerbus in literature and in the Carmina Latina Epigraphica gives us strong arguments to clarify the interesting subject of loci similes in both kind of texts.

A study of this newfound Celtiberic bronze tablet whose content is akin to the one of Botorrita I. The author accepts or criticises, according to the cases, some interpretations of F. Villar - C. Jordán, and also some ones which he himself had formerly proposed. Tiricantam is the name of a sacred oak grove (berkunetakam), the seat of the senate of the tribal confederation of Contrebia Belaisca, which was without doubt the author of the stipulations engraved in the tablets. He accepts turuntas ‘torrent’, the Huerva at the foot of the hill of Botorrita. And he studies specially the agricultural and live stock vocabulary of the tablets, which remains in the modern name Botorrita ≺ *Gʷoto-prtom, or ‘ford of the cows’, ‘Oxford’. It was the ford on the Huerva, before climbing to the acropolis where the sacred precinct lay.

This paper analyses three principal passages of the senatus consulta about the posthumous honours for Germanicus Caesar (Tabula Siarensis) and about Piso's trial (Senatus Consultum de Gnaeo Pisone Patre), in which the rhetorical elaboration of the original senatorial discourses are reflected: 1. the decree on the arch at the Circus Flaminius (TS I 9- 18); 2. the praise by the senate of the imperial house's moderatio during the aftermath of Germanicus' death (SCPP 123-151), and 3. the decree on the portraits of Germanicus and Drusus in the library on the Palatine (TS IIc 13-17). The remarkable use of epideictic oratory in these deliberative and judicial discourses is not accidental but intentional. It shows how the political ideology of the Principate influences the rhetorical practice.

The autor of this paper offers an etymology for the toponyme Oestrymnides in Avienus. The originary etymon would be composed of oestr-, from a paleoeuropean root *eis- ‘to move fast, with impetus’ and -ymnides, from -umni- ≺ *ub-ni-, also a paleoeuropean formation of the series uba ‘water, river’. Another form of the same series, ubna, would be the responsible for the second part of the rivername Garumna. This second formation and others related, as abnis, abna, would be part of other toponyms in Spanish territory.

First-person statements occur frequently in Pindar's odes and contribute to what is termed the “fictive I”. This paper adopts the view that the fictive I is a means used by Pindar.

For more than a century, the Greek suffix -μός/-μος has been the subject of many morphological, semantic and comparative studies. Despite this abundant scientific literature, many questions still remain unanswered. First of all and quite strikingly, general agreement is still wanting, for morphological studies, on the formal criteria that should guide a descriptive analysis of this suffix. Secondly, many semantic studies bring out only a very vague meaning for this suffix. Furthermore, these studies generally take into account a single formal criterion (the suffixal accent) in their analysis of this meaning. Finally, comparative studies almost unanimously try to reconstruct a single original type in *- mo- which appears to be quite inappropriate in order to explain the historical situation of Greek -μός/-μος nouns. All these facts lead us to consider that the time has come to reexamine this subject.
